Crytek knew that it was in a race to beat Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 to the market. As the products of world-famous design houses id Software and Valve, those two games were like two 800-pound gorillas on the horizon, and Crytek realized that as an unknown and upstart studio it would have no chance if Far Cry shipped behind either game. So Far Cry was a rushed project, though Crytek made sure the game met its own internal quality standards. Still, the team knew that it could have done a lot better.

stunning, jaw-dropping stuff here, Crytek as a developer, never impressed me much though :\ next to terrible post-release support for the original Farcry.

Not so easy to belive they are 100% ingame screenshots. The jungle environment makes it look like there would be no limits where the terrain ends like in othergames :D
Hopefully there will be animals in the jungle, not only birds but other shit like in Far Cry but more alive looking =>

it looks good but it looks worse then the very first screens i saw when it was announced :/

The pics 2 and 3 look like they're right out of Delta Force 2 :x

except they are clearly not... lol, zomg at that preview, awesome just awesome.

edit: Is that a frozen wave in the third pic.

Oh boy.

Does anyone else see dollar signs all over those screenshots?

I can appreciate that they are trying to create the ultimate game, and I appreciate their advances in software technology, but it's not like id and VALVe couldn't create super insane poly count games, but they chose to make the game playable.

Shame, to me, it's just a game that all I can do is look at the screenshots and can't play.

Looks absolutely beautiful.

Must be something going on with the ice wave, because that is a freakin palm tree in Antarctica if not. ;)

I remain totally underwhelmed. I mean, the graphics are sure as hell lovely, and I'm sure I'll sit and watch the waves for a few hours but I think Crytek need to realise their graphics aren't going to conjure the gameplay for them. The whole things just looks meh.

Sure, that looks nice, but that is about it. A couple of floating enemies and a ton of frozen rocks. Bland. Boring. The fact that they are discussing the story in such detail is plain silly. Look, Crytek, I don't care about act 1, 2 or 83, I'll find out when I play.

Meh. You all probably saw this coming, but as they churn out new previews my interest just lowers and lowers. Crytek don't really impress me.

Doom 3...playable?

Contrary to what you may think, there are other good games out there aside from Half-Life 2. =P

Just like UE3 it's starting to look less and less impressive as they move past techdemos and actually implement a game.

Actually, Crytek should just stick with tech demos, since its what they are best at.

Contrary to what you may think, I don't believe that. Half-life 2 is probably the best fps I have played, or rather Episode 1, and whilst both are awesome games I've got a whole host of other favourites. Its just right now, there is no shooter of any calibur that has come along and offered what HL2/EP1 has to offer.
Though there is one coming up...

It looks better to me. I mean holy shit. This is insane!

I'm impressed with the screenshots. I'll leave my other thoughts with myself until I actually have played it.

I agree with Samon about that ice picture- looks gorgeous, sure, but what is there for gameplay? However, I'm still hopeful. Don't fail me now, Crytek :D

The interaction level in this game surpasses anything in terms of flora and forna and component damage and Ice physics etc, and new elements in tactical play should come into fruition with those features and make it more interesting and more fun and believeable.

So there is a palethora of reasons to believe the gameplay will be very fun, and no Samon its not HL2 :p, but I'm not going to diss or neg it everytime I post in a thread related to it because I don't believe it will live upto HL2's story telling and gameplay capabilities.

Crysis has so much more in other areas that should be enjoyable simply because nothing like this has been done before, and it looks like some kickass fun, not to mention it comes with a free multiplayer powerstruggle mod that pitches US against Koreans battlefield style.

It has nothing to do with HL2, I'm just talking about it as a whole, and every time I see something new about it I have every right to come in and explain why I think it looks meh, just as you have every right to post "omg omg awesome."

I don't understand why you label it as either awesome or meh before you've had a chance to actually play it!

He has a point!, lets shut up about it and just wait and see.

Not impressed either and wtf is that preview? they don't write their impressions of playing the game , did they even play it? they just re-capped what we know about the game. So why the trip over there besides a couple of SS with are not good as I tought it will be.

Yes , you can start to judge a game from the videos ,ss and what the devs say , so stop with that crap. I knew D3 will suck , to me at least , since the first ss appeard.

Samon got it right. The ss with the frozen beach looks very bland.

Have you only played like ten fps'?

I think you could boil that down to "I don't agree with your opinion, but, it is your opinon at that."

Samon, what FPS coming out soon are you refering to, and interested in?

Where are you getting this idea that Crytek isn't working hard on the gameplay? And some people are talking like they've played the game already, "it's a tech demo lol!". Obviously you're not going to get any idea what the gameplay will be like from the screenshots, the purpose of screenshots is to show off graphics and art direction. Many people agree that Far Cry's gameplay was great, maybe not as good as HL2, but certainly better than most games. So why should we expect Crysis to be anything less? Crysis will have massive, fully destructable jungle islands with many different ways to approach the situation. Sounds like a hell of a lot of potential to me.

Yeah, Samon seems to be in denial. Anyway, not to knock Valve or any other competitors, but this game is doing what no one has currently done, and that in the immediate future, few have planned. Every mountain you see in the game, you can go there (thats not one of the few things, as FarCry and Halo3 and other games are doing). But some of the new things are...They have motion blur, they have totally destructable environments, you can't shoot a lampost and knock it down in ep2, but you can blow down buildings, any tree, or any structure (it's just a matter of ammo), in Crysis. Not to mention, the ai in crysisi is really advanced. Along with completely interactive environments as well...for example, if you run through a bush, that bush moves and adjusts to you, if you step on a log, it moves. Their clouds aren't skyboxes, they're in-game rendered volumetric fog. Not only is the environments and weapons, along with a customizable suit, incredible. You have your own squads, and you battle massive enemies, some that put the strider to shame as a couple of reviewers explained. But the DX10 effects, and gameplay looks crazy. Not to mention Crytek have pro writers producing a cinema quality epic. Half Life 2 and the sequel(s) and prequels are excellent examples of creativity, but Crytek ain't going to let Valve take all the goodies from that chest.

But you're missing the point entirely, M1CH43L. Pretty much every innovation you listed in there is technical. Which is nice- everybody loves eyecandy- but nothing new in the gameplay department.

Overhype, just like another run of the mill game crytek produced.

The technical aspects influence the gameplay, so 'technically' there are new gameplay elements. why do people have this view that gameplay is a totally seperate entity, subtle elements which are usually most enjoyable hinge on the technical aspects of the game engine, the technicalities of the AI, which we havn't really experianced yet.. the technicalities and use of the physics engine (which is what gave HL2's gameplay it's ground breaking gameplay)... and so on

Graphics wise this game looks absolutely gorgeous but like Samon I also have to worry about the gameplay. Far Cry had great graphics but lacked in story and the gameplay felt like a physics tech demo and nothing more. No meat to it and yet I would have to say that the Half-Life franchise is also my current favorite first person shooter series with the Halo series following that. If Crytek can tell a great story and offer good gameplay to go with this story then yes this game could be a major hit and one that would get me to finally upgrade my PC. As of right now the game is still early in development so I will wait and see before making my judgement. So far it's looking great.

For me the story isn't all that important. Sure I enjoy a good story but for me the fun factor comes first. Personally I enjoyed Far Cry, the only things I didn't like is the fact that the character moved much to slow and it had high system requirements at that time. So if they're gonna build on the previous game and make it better, maybe add a decent story line too in the proses, it's all good. The fact that this game is going to have a fully destructible environment means a definite buy for me at least.

The game is good as long as you enjoy it. There, stupid little kids.

HL2 owns all. =)

This thread made my day,

Not quite, battling with a squad in a war like environment, to battling gigantic structured monsters, on your own, in an amazing environment, is what gameplay is about. The Half Life series would be just another series without their stunning visuals and physics, you can't deny that.
