Okay may I be the first to say Ouch! I really wasn't expecting this. I was expecting to see DirectX 11 compatibility, but I guess they have to really flesh out DX10 first. Crytek are going to be at the GDC so this should be interesting. They do mention MMO in he press release so they may show Entropia the CryEngine (only screenshots have been released). Possibilities of the new IP make me excited.

This truly came out of nowhere. Crytek announces CryENGINE 3 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, MMO and DirectX 9/DirectX 10. CryENGINE 3 will be introduced at Game Developers Conference on March 23-27.

Full press release here

Seems like this will be more optimized and low-end system friendly version of CryEngine, since it's for mmos and consoles. This is going to be an interesting GDC.

EDIT: Will not be surprised if it looks the same or worse than CryEngine 2.

I hope it's just better optimized, I want my 8800GT Superclocked to actually run Crysis on a mix of medium and high settings.

Oh man. I wonder if the graphics look like RL or something.

"The future, in our terms, starts next year. Next year we start researching our 2012 engine," the Crytek founder told the audience.

"I believe in 2011 and beyond, you'll see very creative use of rendering methods," Yerli says. "It will develop a lot of styles."

Which might sound rather technical, but there are other ramifications. "Software rendering will become, again, a renaissance of programming. That will allow for a new style that will rival CGI."

Having reached those conclusions, Yerli states: "The action is simple. We are linking ourselves to the console cycle."

"Frankly we are linking ourselves to the PS4," he continues by saying that it's a "driving beacon" for his company, despite the fact that Sony hasn't given the company full details. "That's probably the most important information that our company is missing."

"Speaking at Games Convention Developers Conference 2008 in Leipzig, Germany, Crytek CEO and President Cevat Yerli said the studio's next engine should be ready for sometime in 2012. As of right now, he says, the degree to which graphics can represent real-life is bottlenecked by a lack of new hardware. He says GPU and CPU technology are converging, evident in the new technologies in development at Nvidia and ATI, as well as what Intel's doing with Larrabee. Until the growing trend of CPU and GPU convergence is more defined, developers will have to focus on increased graphical stylization as well as more advanced physics and AI programming.

Crytek's previous engines include the CryEngine 1, which powered the first-person shooter Far Cry in 2004, and CryEngine 2, which was used for Crysis as well as the upcoming Crysis Warhead. Yerli believes this engine technology will be more than sufficient in powering games through 2012, when he expects Microsoft and Sony to release their new consoles.

Development in the future will require studios to more effectively streamline their production processes, both on the technical and office workflow side of things. In five years, Yerli seemed confident that real-time gaming graphics will match current CGI offline rendering. As of right now, Crytek is still working to increase efficiency with its CryEngine 2 for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 platforms. Yerli mentioned that the PlayStation 3 required an extra degree of work, but the company is convinced it's worth the effort to get the engine running properly on Sony's platform.

In the latter part of 2009 is when Yerli expects Crytek to begin full production in its next engine, which will be tailored for development across multiple platforms. Until then, he's excited by the gameplay possibilities that may become possible as developers focus on technical aspects aside from graphical realism, though he didn't go into many specific examples of what was possible."

Hey, it makes sense. Both of their products were major let downs and did poorly (relatively). Now they're teaming up!

*awaits announcement of silly "Cry"-titled game that will be first to use the engine*

How many games were made using the CryEngine (1 or 2)? Besides FarCry and Crysis ofc. I am pretty sure it's none. Smart move to team up with Sony in these dire economical times. They prolly need the Nip cash.

Oh and lets speculate about the title for the game that will be built for this engine! My suggestion: CryKey. It would feature an Australian animal lover that gets stranded on a desert island, surrounded by a sea full of stingrays.

EDIT lol@Amish Didn't see that while I was writing my post.

*Imagines Crypt, featuring a bodybuilder/archaeologist who has to infiltrate a secret cave complex guarded by soldiers only to find there an old alien technology that makes people into mutants.*

That would be Crypt Raider then.

Software rendering? Does he mean raytracing?

I like Crytek they push the envelope. Their games are not the best but still very very good. Cant wait to see what they have in store.

Cry Some More: Beyond Bleeding Edge

The game consists of a false OS wherein the ultimate goal is to install and play a Crytek game at more than 10 fps.

Their artists and programmers are great. Their game designers and writers are shit.

Great, more games that can only be played on super computers.

Wrong. More games that can be played on consoles. Specifically, Sony consoles. I'm guessing by 'software rendering' he means a return to more CPU intensive apps than GPU. I could be wrong about that though.

As long as it is not just a watered down port of CryEngine 2 I will be happy. I am very interested to see what this means for gaming. Maybe they can take the focus off the damn tech and start working on story. :dozey:

Awww isn't that cute? Because graphics can't be upgraded for the time being, developers are forced to focus on things other than graphics.

What happened to "CryEngine 2 won't look its best until 2010" or whatever it was?

I think the goal here is greater scalability and longevity than Cryengine 2. For a company that makes the majority of it's money from hardware sponsors, engine licensees and benchmark software companies, we'll probably start seeing new renditions of the tech as frequent (or more frequently) than renditions of something like Id Tech or Unreal Engine. It's how to survive being an AAA PC developer and releasing mediocre products these days, so bring on games that are more exciting in screen shots and tech demos than in actual game play.

Crytek is becoming very good at what it does.

Is it just me, or is this is the only engine I've seen that has real-time lighting with soft dynamic shadows, with correct umbra's and penumbra's

How about CryRay?

*gets coat.

Nice, another shitty Crytek game on the way!

This.

I wonder which 'Enemy of the west' gets to be the bad guys this time (before the aliens/mutants start turning up). Al Qaeda? The Cubans? Old familiars the Russians? :dozey:

Release a punishing new graphics engine at a time when no one can afford, or do not want, new thousand dollar computers.

gg

They bought Free Radical Design last month (Source). I predict that this is simply a renaming of the engine that they were working on for Timesplitters 4. And hoping that Crytek will let them get on with TS4
