I was wonding how many people considered CS to be a Sport, im not to sure my self, i guess it could be considered a sport what with all the compotitions and such.

Um so u run/physically exhasted when u play cs? To me a sport requires movement, and moving a mouse doesnt count.

I took this from some guy talking about the performance of NiP, i think its quite intresting that playing CS is seen as a job, just like sports pro's are playing it and getting very well paid.

"This is not for fun, playing Counter-Strike is their job and it has to be taken as seriously as any other job."

Perhaps it dependes on what level or in what context you are playing the game, a clan match for some kind of ladder could be seen as a sport, all the team work that is involved. A public game could be seen as just a game, no tactics, run and gun.

You seriously have problems if you consider CS a sport.

For the most part it's a game. Sure it's competitive, but like another poster said do you get any physical exertion from camping behind a box? Nope.

Although in CPL\TWL and matches, then maybe it could be considered a sport.

Very helpful comment. Im not saying i do or dont, im trying to see what people think on the matter and i dont see how pathetic comments like that help.

Some may call it a sport because of tournaments and such, but it's just really a game. If you "obsess" over it, it is a sport... just like if you obsess over WoW/EQ2, it becomes a world.

CS is a game, a very competitive game and some times, but yet still just a game.

Well, I just had to...
According to Webster's, CS would be considered a sport.

Function: noun
1 a : a source of diversion : RECREATION b : sexual play c (1) : physical activity engaged in for pleasure (2) : a particular activity (as an athletic game) so engaged in.

Spare me the jokes of the sexual play as we don't need a thread full of those. Anyways, a particular activity, which playing CS would be an activity. Although, it does say "as an athletic game," it also doesn't say that it particularly pertains to an athletic event.

it's only a game... if you think cs is sport... well... then you have no hope left... :|

It's a game that requires skill but I wouldn't go so far as to say it is a sport.

It depends on your definition of sport, yes.

Most people here seem to think sport is exclusively physically exhausting activity which it isn't, target shooting and racing etc are sports, some even consider chess a sport.

It'd be an e-sport, which is pretty much is. There's a great deal of competitivity going on in leagues, and clans pretty much have the mentality of real sport teams, I frankly don't see any difference except that the sports are carried out with different means.

I don't play CS myself, but if you just take a quick glance at some sites on the subject as well as the tournaments and leagues going on, to me, it's pretty strange not to call it a sport.

I use the very same logic to prove that Golf is not a sport, it's just a picnic gone awry.
CS is not a sport.

Did you know chess is a sport? Even though it doesn't involve physical engagement (well you move your hands, but you know what I mean :p)

A game is something you can read the instructions for, sit down, and play.

A sport is something that requires constant training to stay in shape for (mentally or physically), and usually involves competition to drive overall skill levels higher.

I'd say for the majority of players CS is just a game, but there's a good chunk of people for whom it is a sport--and some of us are just using CS to train people for CQB in other games.

Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
It's competitive, but still a game.

sport

1.
a)Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
b) A particular form of this activity.
2.
An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.

counter strike is not a sport

That last comment was inane.

It's a sport and a game. It depends on why you play. I can go out and have a fun match of football with my friends for the hell of it, or I can go out and have a real match where something is at stake. The majority of CS players play for fun, but people like SK and NiP play for what is at stake - money. The exact same thing pro footballers play for. Behind a computer, or on the field, it's not just a game.

Its a game and an eSport... since by the direct deffinition of "sport", a video game canno't possibly be a "sport".

Sport n.
An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.

its not a sport at all, people who say its a sport are idiots,

fact.

why do i say this?

because it is not a sport, it does not involve pysical exertion.

It is however competetive and follows rules etcetc so it is a game.
it is like darts for example, people would argue that is a sport but it isnt.

its like saying a banana is a gun depending how you use it. no matter how good your imagination is, its still a ****ing banana, like you.

idiots.

well they say games like cs train your brain to think quicker in times situations, so thats technically giving your brain a work out, so if you thought it like that it could be a sport i guess, but lets face it, it's just a game xD

It's A game. Sport is "A competitive athletic event." Cs does NOT involve physical exertion. SO its a game.

It's a game :)

(I also consider darts and snooker to be games too, haven't decided on Golf yet)

I consider it to be a sport.

CS has this one

A sport is something that requires constant training to stay in shape for (mentally or physically), and usually involves competition to drive overall skill levels higher
CS has this one too.
But all in all, it's just a matter of your definition of the word 'sport'.
If Chess, Snooker, Darts, Golf and other 'not-so-very-physically-intensive' games are also considered sport, why can't CS?
