This may be a stupid question since I have not yet been forced to use Steam (that will all change in a few days as the WON servers are killed), how will someone start a CS Source server during the beta period?..Will there be a dedicated option? ..Just a thought..... :|

I'm wondering this too. Either they release a HLDS tool for it, or it'll be all client-side servers.

Or maybe they'll go Ubisoft style, and have like 20 "official" servers up for people. Maybe not..

given that they're expecting about 100,000 people to play, they'll need more than a few official servers. There'll be a dedicated server release too.

And a Halflife2.net dedicated CS:Source server.

That makes sense to me....I just haven't heard their plan on all this "beta test" thing outside of a rough outline on dates they are going to prestage d/ling client-side CS Source files....

How can there be 100,000 players? I mean, there's like what.. 20,000 CZ players currently? I doubt there's THAT many cyber cafés

Granted, I never really thought they'd provide us with some servers, but, HLDS for a one map beta seems a bit odd IMO

/me shrugs

It was stated that they're expecting that many (unless I got it wrong :p)

It's daft to not release a server package though. Even 20k+ players is too much for them to provide the servers for.

True. It'll just be hard to see how this is going to be accomplished. The Cyber Café preload is less than a week away now (well, if that around-the-28th date holds any water)

Anyhow, didn't they say a few hundred thousand, not 100,000?
/me checks

Edit:

http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=27243

A couple hundred thousand. The plot thickens!

Maybe they'll chuck up a couple of servers in BFE somewhere eh?...beauuty!!

I was wondering this same question.

A HalfLife2.net dedicated CS-Source server? Can I come? :p

If you've got the beta, yes.

I'm probably going to password it though - HL2.net members only

I think you'd have to... otherwise it would be cram packed full of random people 24/7 and no HL2.net members would even get a look-in.

Good idea though, will be fun to play CS Source alongside you guys.

Sounds good Pi Mu Rho. So when the betas available can i PM you for the IP? Oh wait...it will be a UK server, nevermind.

Wonder if there is a dedicated option how many people can play in 1 game?

there will be a dedicated sever. dont have the quote ready. it was somewhere at hlportal.de

i guess its still 32player per server.

I am almost tempted to go out and get CS:CZ just for this beta...because I've been bored as hell lately... $23...bah.. too much.

$23? What's that in pounds? About the cost of a sandwich in London?

You have to laugh at how cheap the rest of the world gets stuff, because if you didn't, you'd cry...

Crusader so true.
but on topic.
does anyone have any idea on the bandwidth requirements cpu and ram reqs that a server might need. as long as there is a nice linux dedicated server we will all be fine ;)

US$23 == £12.65

CS:CZ from http://www.play.com/ == £12.99 (inc. VAT and P&P)

Yeah, the US gets everything so much cheaper.

John.

Yes, I spend half of my time there, and they do :)

That's also an online retailer, they don't tend to be so steep.

Also you missed the point of my post entirely, I was saying that 12.65 was dirt cheap, which it is. So the fact that American people thought that it was expensive means that the US is used to getting things even cheaper.

If you want a good example, look at the petrol prices in the US, they are about half the price of petrol here, and yet you have all these Americans going crazy at the prices.

Anthony.

But that is because there are millions upon millions more cars in the US than the UK. If you have a product that 10 people will buy, you will have to make it fairly expensive. If 100 people will buy it, you can make it much cheaper, and still make more profit. same thing, 'cept on a much larger scale about gas prices.

Get 100 million plus cars and drviers in the uk, and gas will be cheaper.

No, the difference in petrol prices between US and UK is tax, tax, tax. The UK government want to tax car drivers into using public transport, the US government doesn't care about the environment.</stir>
