Cursive VS Print

I know in other parts of the world, they do not use the terms Cursive or Print. They use things like joint writing and handwriting and block letters... etc. But you all know what I mean.

My teachers used to insist I write in cursive, that was supposed to be the standard or something. I never figured out why, it's not any faster and it's more difficult to read. I'm 26, college degree (6 years ago), successful, happy... and I still don't see the purpose.
