I don't know if it was a book or short story or anything beforehand (the new movie is my first exposure) but it looks really good. The story sounds great and I love the trailers - just the commercials for MNU. Anyone have an opinion?

God, the influx of comments on that video facepalm worthy with all the talk about the halo movie.

Not really, the Halo film is just on a sort of indefinite suspension, since Jackson and the studio had to agree to disagree. District 9 is what Jackson and Blomkamp decided to do instead. This way Blomkamp gets his name known (hopefully with a great film), while the rights holders can decide whether they want to revisit the Halo idea or leave it on the shelf.

I know.

Some say that there are giant similarities between D-9 and HL2. I kinda doubt they are connected plot wise but some of the imagery and circumstances could have been influence by a writer or designer who plays HL2. Any thoughts

I think they're probably just reacting to the washed-out near future look that they both have, and putting really fantastic sci-fi elements into a really down-to-earth setting.

This movie looks really cool, but I got disappointed when I was watching comic con live and they were interviewing him about the movie, I don't remember exactly, but I do remember the important parts.

Interviewer: So the move obviously has a lot about racism and politics in it, what can you tell us about that?
Jackson: Well there are a lot of political themes that's not really what the movie is about, it's about action and blowing things up

When I heard that I was disappoint, I just hope he was trying to get idiots to watch it and not serious.

I highly doubt he was being serious about that, considering in interviews with Peter Jackson, Jackson said that this is a very personal film for Blomkamp because of its themes dealing with apartheid in South Africa.

Well that's good, i'm very excited for this movie, and its subject matter.

Been reading some stuff on D-9 and it sounds like it might be amazing. Think I'll see this opening night with some friends if I'm not busy.

I like that Blomkamp stated that he wanted to make the film as Un-Hollywood as possible.

looking forward to it. to be honest the action sequences turn me off a bit.

That's what I was thinking before I saw it, but they're incredibly well integrated. Some of them are a bit over the top in an 'alien-tech' sort of way, but at its heart it's not an action movie.

Do you think it will be big with general audiences?

I think the trailer has enough 'SMASH BANG ALIENZ' to appeal to a wide audience, yes. I was talking to someone who was also at the media screening yesterday, and they said they thought it could be the Alien of this generation. Though I'm pretty sure Alien is still the Alien of this generation.

Hopefully the buzz from Comic-Con hasn't worn off yet. I think the Halo connection will contribute to the success of the movie. Remember, all they need to make is a little over $30 million and they've made a profit.

wtf this was the best movie i've seen all year. and it had a gravity gun.

I was speechless at the end, for a good ten to twenty minutes. I had to take some time to comprehend how amazing it was. I'll just copy what I said on Facebook. I can't contain myself because of how awesome it is.

"District 9 is one of the best movies I have ever seen. I had high expectations, and it far exceeded them. You think you have an idea what's going on from the trailers, but there's a significant point in the movie something COMPLETELY UNEXPECTED happens and shit..I was in awe the entire time. Literally, my lower jaw dropped on many occasions. Half-documentary/half-****ing awesome sci-fi action. Go see it or YOU LOSE"

And in response to someone who said, "I'm skeptical."

"I don't know what will persuade you, but I promise that you will be amazed. I'm generally very skeptical of a lot of sci-fi movies and for that, most feature movies that come out on a yearly basis. This movie was independently financed so they didn't have to dumb it down or anything. It is so ****ing violent and dark; I kid you not. And it's WICKED GOOD.

There are some things in this film that I haven't seen any other sci-fi movie do, and it go beyond just the visuals and alien technology seen in it. It's the tone, pacing and plot formation that really makes this movie. Of course, all of the alien technology is incredible."

Seeing it at 9:20 tonight with several friends.

I'm damn excited.

I actually didn't care about this movie until I heard the amazing reviews it's been getting, need to check when this is out in the uk.

I will call your cell 20 minutes before the ending to ruin the movie!

Quite possibly one of the best films in the past decade. It surpassed my expectations tenfold, and my expectations were astronomical. There's so much originality in this film it's amazing. I haven't sat on the edge of my seat in a movie with chills running down my back and legitimate care and concern for the characters (especially an animated one at that) since... well, frankly I don't remember a film that has immersed me as well as this movie has. Film of the year, no doubt. This bitch is going to sweep the floor come award season.

I thought it sounded kinda crap but with whats been out lately I will check it out

Generally I tend to wait for stuff to come to DVD because I hate cinemas, but I think with is (and maybe Avatar) I'm going to make an exception.

Prior to last night, I would've said that the year 2009 only produced one great movie. (That would be The Hurt Locker) In a weak movie year, the rest were bad, okay or merely good.

Now I can dutifully say that there are two great movies this year.

District 9 blew me away in my seat, like one of those neat alien energy weapons seen in the movie that made human beings into a rain of little giblets that splattered the camera lens! It's certainly not for the squeamish as there was one cruel scene after another. But if you have a strong stomach for violence and a a brain for smart political satire and social commentary then go watch District 9.

The star of D-9 Sharlto Copley , gave a phenomenal performance as Wikus van der Merwe, a slimy pencil pushing bottlenecked-bureaucrat who is forced to become Rambo. I certainly can't call him a hero but the transformation he undergoes and his flaws makes him most memorable characters to come to fruition in years.

The movie was born from the ashes of the Halo movie, but if there are any video game comparisons, it would be to Half-Life. Both share a ruined bleak look and both have protagonists who are normal men unwillingly put into situations and become killing machines. The "prawns" seen in the movies bear similarities to the Vortigaunts and there is even a gravity gun type weapon that drew loud applause from the audience.

Spectacular movie, one of the best Sci-Fi films. Great story, atmosphere, and action.

It's unfortunate though, the audience didn't appreciate it in quite the same way, and were only captivated by scenes of vomiting and scenes of action.

The girl next to me at one point asked her boyfriend "Why is that alien wearing a bra?"

Breathtakingly excellent movie. My expectations were also shattered. Perfect mix of drama, action, and even comedy. Definitely picking this one up on Blu-ray the day it gets released.
