Unfortunely, not an April Fools joke.
On Friday, the Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in Richmond, Va., ordered Albert Snyder to pay $16,510 to Fred Phelps, leader of the Westboro Baptist Church. The group has picketed numerous soldiers’ funerals since 2001, including Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder’s funeral in 2006, using anti-gay and anti-military signs and slogans.

However, in a twist, Bill 'O Riley is offering to pay the 16k.

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case in the fall, but in the meantime the legal battle has sparked a national dispute over free speech and privacy for military families. A grassroots fundraising campaign to help Snyder has reached Fox News' Bill O'Reilly, who says he'll cover the $16,000 tab.

"I will pay Mr. Snyder's obligation. I'm not going to let this injustice stand," O'Reilly said Wednesday on his show, "The O'Reilly Factor." "It's obvious those cranks at Westboro were intentionally trying to hurt Mr. Snyder and his family."

The court reversed the ruling. First he was awarded several million, now he loses it all and has to pay 16,000 dollars.:(
 
Honestly, This Frank Phelps guy should be shipped over to Iraq before he continues his dumbass anti-military campaign.

From what I understand he initially won the case against them, then they appealed and won. As part of the appeal the father was ordered to pay the court costs of the protesters.

if you guys haven't seen the "the most hated family in america" documentary, I suggest you guys do. These people are so diluted, the father wouldn't even answer the journalist's question of "how many kids do you have?" because apparently that's below him. Mr. Phelps is a like 5000 Einsteins multiplied by a million Stephen Hawkings so asking him just any question is a waste of the single greatest opportunity anybody has ever gotten, ever.

Then when the journalist returned with religious questions the father kept brushing them off. What I understand is Mr. Phelps can't be bothered to answer the journalist's religious questions because the journalist is not as smart as Mr. Phelps and therefore doesn't already know the answers, so it's impossible to explain the answers in a way he'll understand.

It does really bother me how they talk though, it's so wordy and convoluted. "The Laramie Project is a tawdry bit of banal fag melodrama—sordid, cheap, unaffecting, drearily predictable—without the least artistic or literary merit or redeeming social value. Indeed, its only purpose is to promote sinful, soul-damning sodomy by playing on the sick, maudlin emotions of doomed, godless America and thereby to recruit ill-bred teenagers to lives of sin, shame, disease, death and hell." I mean he could have just said, "The Laramie Project is a terrible play with no redeeming social value. Indeed, its only purpose is to promote a godless America and to recruit teenagers to lives of sin." I really started to feel like they spoke like this to make it harder to counter their "point".

I honestly wish these people came to my town, I'd love to walk out to their picket lines with a pink shirt and rainbow poster and just stand there and see what happened. But I am really proud of what Bill is doing, it almost makes up for him demanding his crew cut off that marine's mic during an interview.

He's just known for being stubborn and ignorant on his show. He's probably a nice guy if you got to know him though.
 
Sometimes I truly believe people protest for the sake of protesting. Mainly because I am not willing to believe that people are this inconsiderate. Here's a view I share with a friend of mine.

Why would you want to tell that soldier, who is basically there to preserve everything you live for, including the right to live, that he can't protect you because he likes having a cock in his ass? Even in Medieval times, when slaves were the lowest of the low, they fought in the army when they were needed, nobody turned them away, because it's one more body to save who knows how many lives on their side. Why is it okay for these people to protest their own freedom? If you don't like it, move to Africa. If you really want to be told how to live, go over to Iraq and become a citizen. Until then, quit protesting people that died to save you.

I don't normally have ill feelings like this towards people, but Fred needs to die of a heart attack already. And his daughter needs to have a brain aneurysm or something.

Good on O'Reilly for covering the fee... but the guy shouldn't have had to pay it in the first place. Disgusting.

What pisses me off... is that people out there are trying to pawn the church off as some liberal group. How ****ing partisan can you get? Yeah... like a bunch of ****ing liberals are going to be anti-gay like the ****ing Westboro Baptist Church is. If there's one thing we can unite on, it's our opposition to that group of evil ****ing people.

This also doesnt answer his question. Hes asking what the reason is for making the guy pay for their court fees.

I may be wrong, but I believe that if someone sues you, you have the right to demand they pay your court expenses if they lose the trial, since they're the reason you had to pay them in the first place.
 
Supposedly, it cost the Christ Bastards $100,000 in legal fees. So, I see this as a win, even if they win again. Hopefully it will cost them another $100,000. Anything to make their lives more miserable than they seem to be doing on their own.

I'm surprised they didn't lose again, honestly. Free speech isn't a ticket to intentionally and emotionally harm people. It's illegal, I'm sure of it; they just had a better lawyer. After being ordered to pay one million dollars, I guess they got the best lawyer money can buy and managed to beat it.

If he can convince the court that they caused him emotional pain and suffering, then it is illegal. Obviously, he did convince them of it originally. They awarded him a million dollars.

Often the actions necessary to do this would constitute harassment or assault, and AFAIK you can always sue people for emotional distress and whatnot in a civil court if you think it's worth it.

They think our soldiers are dying because we are a nation that houses homosexuals. So the logical progression from that is to harass the friends and family of said dead soldiers!

Don't try to make sense of it.
 
I'm generally unsympathetic to any attempts to limit or set boundaries on protest - even direct action and legally questionable denial of space - but picketing a funeral is an abuse of the function of protest, even if military funerals are arguably part of the paegantry of war.

And thus you see the pettiness of your average fundamentalist. It doesn't even matter what religion it is, either.

I also see only one verse that they cite in all their stuff, and it isn't even the whole verse. It's just a tool for their agenda that they've twisted and bent out of shape.

So, am I getting this right?

A group of extremely anti-gay right wingers are blaming the deaths of soldiers on the existence of homosexuality in America (even though this particular soldier isn't gay). And using this funeral as a location/opportunity to spread their twisted message, against the will of the family of the deceased soldier?
