Decadence is a mod we've been keeping tabs on for a while, it's one of those mods raising the bar on an artistic level with 100 percent custom content and full marks for taking on something different. For those of you not filled in with what the mod is about check out this overview. Elements of L4D and Gears of War both thrown in there. [br]</br>
The gameplay in Decadence is focused on two vs two player combat where the value of keeping your teammate alive and working together is of the outermost importance for winning the match. To complement the already announced character, Echo, the team would like to welcome his new teammate; Zoe! While Echo is the brute warrior of the two, dealing with close combat and ambushing the enemy. Zoe is capable of medium to long range attack of the enemy with her primary fire, while she got a tranquilizing dart to sabotage and drug whoever comes in contact with it.
This mod holds much promise especially with a storyline backing it. It's being developed by an experienced team, including our resident Majestic XII! Lastly, check out an example of their new media below and some more on their newly updated website, where they are also looking for a new sound effects artist to help the development along. Wow, never heard of this mod before. Looks great.

2v2 player combat? Yeah, good luck with that.

This.

And 100% custom content isn't something to be praised.
I have no interest in supporting someone's resume building, and it seems like that's all "mods" like this are.

Are those pictures ridiculously dark for anyone else?

i think that they have a chance to make this a really interesting game. i feel that they should make more than 2 different types of classes, but keep the 2v2 aspect. what this game is gonna come down to in order to keep people playing are the tactics the two character's can use together to take out the other. what can help are variety in classes, making each class interesting with a variety of different play styles (more deep than tf2). it sounds tough to be able to achieve this. and it probably is. but this has the potential to be a really fun and competitive game.

also the maps the need to have enough replay value to warrant different strategies rather than seizing the overpowered choke point or what have you.

looking forward to this :]

The people who do programming and design work on the mod would also like to build a resume with this mod, which could mean they put some effort in those aspects as well... you know, making the mod fun to play ;)

Intamin: I actually agree with you. I'm going to lighten things up in my map (the first screen) in the next compile. It's hard to see stuff under the bridges etc :).

Looks very dark but it looks very good from what I can make out from the images.

I just don't see the mod staying alive when it's released if servers will only allow 4 people to actually play during a round.
I mean if it's a 32 player server and you only have 4 players actually playing with 28 people spectating for 30 minutes(maybe a little less?) I highly doubt that'll be enjoyable.

But, I'll reserve final judgment until it releases.

Well do you honestly think they are going to have 32 slot servers for 4 active players per game? Using a tiny bit of logic and the foundation L4D will support, their servers will probably be with 4 slots as a maximum. L4D may have a couple more for people to play the infected side but Decedance should have many servers, due to players being able to make servers themselves as 4 players is relatively easy to support without a dedicated server.

I agree it's brave, but this kind of thing has proved very successful with GoW online.

True, I was thinking they'd only support 4 players on a single server at first but then I thought "This mod would have to be damn good if they want to have a thriving online community with hundreds of 4 player servers."

Damn ballsy of them, I guess that's fairly admirable.

Killing Floor for UT2004 has an optimal player count of 6 people. There aren't that many dedicated servers for it, but it seems that client run servers are pretty popular and they sprout up on weekends and other peak times. Those kinds of servers were actually pretty stable in my experience.

That said, I am a little worried about how 4 player servers are going to fill up. I'm hoping that joining empty servers with a friend should be enough to quickly get 2 others to join. On the other hand, organizing 4 player gaming groups shouldn't be too difficult, and there should be plenty of empty servers to commandeer.

Decadence looks delicious, as usual. I can't wait until we get our hands on it.

Good to hear, Majestic.

After I turned on 5x brightness on my ViewSonic I could the see pics pretty well and what I saw looked fantastic.

Great work on the maps, at least! :)

Killing Floor's not quite the same because, as I recall, the 6 players are all on the same team.

I think the mod needs a solid community hub to bring players together so you don't need to have 3 other willing friends to enjoy the mod, like a pickup IRC channel. Just leaving it as default will result in a lot of frustrating times missing out on that 4th spot on a server when 5 people try to grab the last spot at once.

Some of those map shots could do with some more colour variation on the lighting/textures, but the brushwork is solid.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. These are some of the most talented guys I've ever had the pleasure of working with. I'm completely confident that they'll make it happen.

I'm also fairly confident that this mod will be fantastic when it releases. Hopefully the server logistics will be well organized when the time comes, as having lots of passworded 4 player servers probably won't help the pub playing community very much.

We haven't released information about everything we work on yet, but we do understand the potential problems with servers and bringing players together. We plan to do something about all these things :)

Keep watching the mod and you'll see!

Keep the 2 vs 2 aspect as a game mode i'd say. Then add a larger maybe 12 vs 12 gampe play mode or something.

I first saw this thinking "oh a new singleplayer mod! Looks awesome"

Now "another multiplayer mod, woop-de-doo"

Though the screens I've seen look really sweet. But multiplayer. Meh, we'll see.
