Deus Ex 3 announced.

What's that Eidos? Deus Ex Three? But I thought you boys didn't do numbered games anymore? I thought you said they were for fags, and that 'Deadly Shadows' was dripping with Manly Pride? Won't the console users get scared off Eidos? Better make sure you make the guns really big on the cover again boys, or else they might think you've made a game for queers!

No but really Eidos, you're all right. Deus Ex is a Holy Cow that has already been slaughtered by a developer that committed ritualistic suicide some time ago. If Deus Ex 3 sucks, at least it won't see the same kind of drop in quality. In fact, I fully expect reviewers to be singing its praises based solely on the fact that 'hey, It's not Deus Ex: Invisible War!' When all that was really wrong with Invisible War was that it wasn't Deus Ex. Or a fun game. Or a well designed game. Oh, and this too:

Deus Ex 1 looks better graphics-wise than Deus Ex 2 does... but the second one somehow managed to run like shit. So let's hope they actually use a good graphics engine this time. And make it a PC game for the love of god... if this is just another consoley piece of trash it's like raping the corpse (the second one killed it) of the original game. Look this whole city fits in a PARKING GARAGE! NEAT! OUR UI IS SHIT TOO!
 
They used Unreal Engine 2 for that game. The problem was that they decided to code their own dynamic shadowing into the game. To be fair, this was one of the first games to do these types of shadows for every object on-screen, but the engine just couldn't handle it.
Don't forget Bloom. Invisible War was the first game I remember having that. Invisible War is an Ironic name really, since I still see Deus Ex 2 light sources when I close my eyes, 4 years on. You raped my eyeballs, Ion Storm, but it hurt me most when you froze Liberty Island, because what was easily achievable in two loading points in 2000 is entirely impossible in anything less than four in 2003.

That and the fact that their version of the engine was apparently unable to simulate bodies of water. How the hell they managed that has always been a mystery to me.
 
Hence why Deus Ex 2 feels so half arsed in everything it does, and why there is no Ion Storm left. It must have been fun for the brief moment that the Ion Storm name was attached to something of actual quality.
 
If they **** this up, I will eat Warren Spector with a spoon. Even if he's not responsible for it.

Can't wait to see this game get over hyped and fall short like every other cross platform game.

Well, you've got to give the market games like "Deus Ex" pander to time to grow in the console world. If it's release will be underwhelming then it will be so without regard to any sort of exclusivity.
 
Idunno about that. There have been a lot of recent titles that kick ass on consoles, and are simply shit for PC. The second Deus Ex for example. I had to get mods the second day to get rid of as much of the Console interface as possible, because I couldnt stand the huge interface that they had because of the xbox. It still felt awkward after too, because it was simply designed with a console in mind, not a PC.

I don't really believe that makes for an underwhelming game. The sequel was underwhelming for conceptual reasons that PC exclusivity wouldn't have changed.
 
IW was fecked up for a number of reasons. In-fighting, console limitations, poor optimization, and slighting the original fanbase. Harvey Smith tried, bless him. But there's no denying it's vastly inferior to the first.

I remember downloading the demo of IW they released and found it was loading X-Box configurations for my PC. Within two days there were guides up all over the place instructing people how to edit their game files so it was actually playable, as these settings couldn't even be configured in the options menu. And few of the issues were addressed when it was finally released. It was flawed conceptually, but the technical difficulties imposed because of going multiplatform marred it just as so IMO. In the end, a frozen Liberty Island separated into four sections sucks ass no matter which way you cut it.

I still had lots of fun with it. So it's not a bad game. It's just a shadow of the original. And for all their effort in streamlining the experience (I do believe at least some of this was due to console development), it seems they only pissed off a lot of their original fanbase. A lot of people liked what they removed, and when it feels like devs are dumbing down a series at your expense, you get ticked.

The game also wasn't brilliant at entity handling, which pretty much meant that you'd never see more than about 8 NPCs in a scene at any one point in time, which made the 'City' levels a complete joke. The lesson for any developers out there is use a Level of detail necessary to convey the atmosphere your game requires.

Thief: Deadly Shadows came out after IW as far as I know.

IW's still better than all this newer shit that you all cream your pants over - Bioshock etc.
 
I don't get why some people are raving about the trailer. What's so special about it? Do I have to play IW to get it?

While IW was certainly more impressive on a sheer technical level - having more polys and better lighting - I ultimately found myself favoring the original DX's graphics. I know a lot of people complained about the drab palette, I found it visually appropriate and nonetheless engrossing. Everything had a better sense of style and size, which made things like UNATCO (and its underbelly), Liberty Island, or Hell's Kitchen so fun to explore. In the sequel, it felt nearly every area was the size of a shoebox. A large weapons manufacturing plant is the size of an elementary school. Buildings seemed halved in their size and there wasn't much to explore. Every major area or city had all the significant locations within a mere block or two of each other. You'd enter a fenced-in courtyard and find a bar, an apartment complex, an armed group, and a helipad all practically stacked right on top of each other. It never conveyed the more realistic and reasonable presentation of DX.

Unfocused, you really only need the first game, Deus Ex. The trailer is nothing special, but the potential is epic. Possibly. I'd give Invisible War a shot too, mind you. It's good enough, but it's just not as impressive.

I think it could be just before the first game, focusing on the social effects of augmentation. "We no not accept augmented people" etc.

They could tell an epic story with this.

I hope they go as deep as that. It all felt rather superficial in Invisible War. The Templars were all just 'Human Augmentation is bad bad bad' and no real attempt to justify the view. If it was Deus Ex 1, you'd have been having optional conversations about obscure Sci-Fi books with bar-men and tramps that would have fleshed it out. I hope they give a thought to achieving that level of meta-story in DX3

"Precise development platforms have not been locked down, but Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 seem like a likely initial bet for the studio. While the Eidos Montreal head could not confirm this, he noted that ?...the studio will not develop for current gen platforms or portables.? He further expressed possible interest in Eidos Montreal developing for the Wii and PC in the longer-term."

There have been many good 3 platform releases lately. I really wouldn't worry about that anymore.

All of those are by major huge developers who have proven track records and a history of PC only games though. What multiplatform games have Eidos not ****ed up?
