Have you guys seen the trailer for this movie "district 9" ? its direct by michael moore and in my opinion is a complete rip-off of Half-Life 2. There is even a gravity gun and enslaved alliens. WHAT THE HELL??? oh and the title "district 9" sounds like city 17 to me. and whats with transformers??? Even though these all shock me, i really want to see the movie.

2:03 gravity gun
1:39 vortigaunt
1:54 transformer
2:00 fast zombie
0:12 citadel?

I didn't interpret any of that as a ripoff, especially the "transformer" robot=/=transformer.

****ing awesome trailer.
Even though I had no idea what the **** was going on.

No, I don't think it's a complete rip-off because it has a completely different story if you noticed from the trailer. While some things look slightly similar to Half-Life 2, I doubt they tried to copy it. You don't see men in masks patrolling the streets with stunsticks, or a huge citadel that protrudes from the ground all the way up through the clouds.

I now pronounce this thread: lolworthy.

You don't have the authority to do so ;)

Not really.
Sometimes you just need a big name to get your work noticed.

With a lot of sci-fi stuff, you're bound to get similiarities on occasion...

Michael Moore might play the xylophone, but he certainly did not direct this film. GTFO

And we REALLY don't care.

Also, Halo is a big rip-off of Ringworld.
But no one seems to care.

muhaha i love it when i get movie fanatics pissed

This either means you're the worst troll ever since you're revealing that you're a troll, or you're trying to play off the bad claims you made in your original post by acting like you meant to piss people off by making bad claims that no one agreed with.

Wait. I don't get it.

I don't even want to go see this, I don't watch movies. Just pointing out that you're terribly wrong.

Everything is a rip-off of everything. Read the Foundation series, and you will realize that so many sci-fi stories have borrowed liberally from it. From Corusant in Star Wars to the holophonor in Futurama, it's all there. Simply discounting a creative work because it liberally uses some element from an earlier work is totally lame.

This movie is a ripoff of HL2 if HL2 is a ripoff of 1984. Thematic similarities at best.

What's someone named "macho man" doing harping on originality anyway?

This thread doesn't do the movie justice. They did an early screening of the film at Comic-Con, and people have said nothing but good things about it.

The audience was simply blown away by the film, whose style was very different from what most of us expected. Shot on digital in a pseudo-documentary style, the movie follows the adventures of Wikus, a bureaucrat heading up a mass eviction operation for the 2.5 million residents of "district 9," a 20-year-old alien favela outside Johannesburg. All the aliens are going to be relocated to a camp hundreds of kilometers away from the city and its alien-hating residents.

For those who haven't seen the second trailer, it is EPIC. Lot more action, and you can tell shit will go down.

And I don't even get the 1984 similarities people have made; just because there is some depiction of an oppressive government doesn't automatically equate to 1984. The movie deals with the problems of apartheid in South Africa in a completely new and interesting light. The director makes a bold prediction as to what we would do if a million starving aliens appeared at our doorstep, with no where else in the universe to go.

RANT: What I don't get is this is one of the most original sci-fi movies in a while (besides Moon), and people are complaining and criticizing it. What is the deal with that? Open up your mouth, and I'll shovel some Transformers 2s, Knowings and 2012s in there and see how you like it. This film was independently made, so it made no compromises for what they wanted to do. The premise is original and it looks intriguing and exciting. What more does it take to satisfy someone here? Spoiled brats!

I think the OP had just confused Micheal Moore for Peter Jackson because they are both fat guys that direct stuff. Some people even confuse Dell Torro for Peter Jackson.

anyway I'm glad it's getting good reviews cause it does look pretty fresh and original. Or about as original as you can get nowadays.

oh and i have no idea why i said michael moore there, it was the auto-correct on my iPhone. anyway i meant Neill Blomkamp. btw it is produced by peter jackson.

How does auto-correct even remotely confuse two completely dissimilar names?

Ask whoever invented T9 on cell phone texting. I've tried to text Jessie Dupree, and it turned it into Jack in The Box.
