This is just me being curious. So...who here believes in an afterlife? And why? (whether it be a religious or "philosophical" reason). This should be interesting (hopefully).

I'm quite a believer in reincarnation personally, at least I like to think that there's more to the afterlife than just an infinite void anyway. The thought of becoming an animal or another human really isn't that far-fetched, only we ourselves wouldn't know it obviously.

Who knows, many of us could have been an animal or another person in a previous life... I could've been Hitler for all we know... MIND BOGGLING!

I can't find a compelling reason not to, although I'm not gonna bank on the fact.

so would you possibly remember it?

p.s. my brother said he was a bee once.... LOL!!

Obviously no one knows the answer to that, but stories such as your brother's where people claim to have memories of being something previously really intrigue me... I just think out of everything, it's one of the more believable paths after death.

I look at it this way, we'll all find out before we know it. Also seeing as I never existed before birth to my recollection :p, I can't say 'not existing' is much to complain about, all been there and done that technically.

Sorry, but

1 - i see a flame war brewing, mwahaha

2- no god = no heaven = no afterlife.

As far as im concerned, when you die, thats it. Blackness. Its a situation that the mind simply cannot comprehend - not being able to think of things. Youre constantly thinking. Your mind is always doing SOMETHING. Even when you sleep (dreams, duh).

One simply cannot comprehend the thought of when you die, there is NOTHING. Thats it. The body dies, so does the mind. The two cant live without each other. We cant get to grips with the fact that theres nothing after death. No more thoughts, dreams etc.

And please, anyone that has a near death experience is full of it. And people that say 'i saw a bright light at the end of a tunnel'...please. No, that was just the surgery lights or the torch the paramedics use to see if you have a concussion when they shine it into your eyes. Man stfu.

I don't know.

Find out when I die I suppose.

Eternal spectator mode would be awesome in an odd kind of way.

That pretty much sums up what I think too...

No, your body is a biological machine, an organism that has evolved, you are driven by your DNA.

If you damage your brain you damage your personality, there is nothing 'else' there.
A baby starts of as a fertilized egg, at what point would it gain a supposed 'soul' and where from?

When you're dead that's it, your brain becomes non functional, the circuitry is dead, your brain no longer experiences anything.

No, I don't.

To me, the thought of simply ceasing to exist after you die is sort of comforting in a way.

Geniuses in this thread, when your body dies, so do you! WHO WOULD'VE THOUGHT?!

no
I'm neither that vain nor that stupid

That in itself is a vain and stupid remark, why call those who have a belief that there may be something beyond death stupid? Or vain for that matter? Buddhists believe in reincarnation and they don't impose their beliefs upon anyone, that's hardly vanity is it...

Agreed there bud,
A lot of people are uncomfortable with the idea of ceasing to exist but i'd rather live a life of doing what you like with no possible consequences once you are dead as compared to heaven (or hell!) or whatever stupid system you believe in.

Makes it all the more important to enjoy this life :)

I don't know.

well ofcourse you dont know .. but what do you believe ?.

as for me... no i do not believe in an afterlife and anyone who does seriously needs to get in touch with reality.

Nah, not really. I mean in a way, part of me thinks there must be something more...but then again... Nah.

fools, we go into another dimension..

we all line up as little clouds at the check in station where King Yamma will decide our fate. If we were bad, then we join Freeza and corp. down in the Home For Infinite Losers (HFIL) and if we were good then we get to enjoy heaven.

If we were martial artist who saved the world, then we can keep our bodies, go on snake way and chill with King Kai, or we can enter the Grand Martial Arts Tournament and fight all the great fighters of the universe.

....idiots..

Yeah that works for me lol

but what do you believe ?

I don't know. :D

Nah, to be honest I reckon we just die and thats it. Nothing.

Would be nice if there was something else after we die. We'll all find out what happens when we die :) Until then I'll just enjoy life :)

I've got a weird theory on life after death....

You relive your life over and over and over....hence the reason you have Deja Vu.

Yeah, it's lame, but I made it up as a kid, and I'm sticking to it.

Exactly. It sort of confirms the importance of living your life to the fullest. Don't hold anything back. I'm not saying do whatever you want, obviously you shouldn't go on a crazy killing spree just because you don't believe in hell, but you shouldn't hide in a corner because you're too afraid of failing, or of what other people might think. You've gotta get out there and experience life, and live like there's no tomorrow, because there really isn't anything waiting for you out there once you're gone. You get one shot at life and you need to make the most of it. Whatever goals you've set for yourself in order for you to have a fulfilling life, you've gotta get out there and make them happen.

That's my take on it anyway.

I know what its likes to be dead. its the same feeling as it was like before you were conceived :)

bvasgm, anytime I need to take a risk that I just can't take.. I always look at it like this,

"Everything is a chemical reaction, we are just atoms moving. What's going to happen next is based on the reactions that happen at atomic and subatomic levels. Thereby I am not in any control of what the risk/dumb thing I am about to do.".

That helps me by simply taking a very logical and scientific look at everything, and basically saying "Hey I can't stop myself from doing this risk, so do it!!". Idk always works for me.

You only go to the afterlife if you're.....

OVER NINE THOUSAND!!!!!!

An imortant thing is to enjoy life and make it last at the same time.

You could get your pleasure from eating juicy doughnuts, smoking 40 cigarettes a day, drinking a bottle of scotch and screwing loads of women unprotected, and die at 40.

Or you could get your pleasure from eating healthy organic produce, doing healthy and fun activities (want a list?) healthy social life with intelligent people, get a lovely girlfriend who becomes your wife and die when you're 100.

Nope

I'd be pleasantly (hopefully) surprised if there is one, though.

hmm so the entire universe is pre determined, then someone just pressed play and put everything in a loop? There are some extreme loop holes to that theory and i don't have a better one lol, neither does anyone else :D

I say, live thinking, die knowing.

Mark Twain said:
I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.

Actually, scratch that. I'm going to heaven and it has a beer volcano and a stripper factory.

no
I'm neither that vain nor that stupid

Who said that originally?

I have a rather split mind on religion and especially afterlives. The logical side says that as our brain is us, our consciousness, then once that stops, we stop. We are merely a collection of electrical signals processing data.

My spiritual side (how I was brought up) however believes there is, and our current life is the growth of our spiritual "body" if you will. Someone I know used a good analogy - Your spiritual self starts off a lifeless blob. Once you start functioning as a human, it starts to grow with you. How you act during life (not necessarily spiritually, but morally) depends how much you grow spiritually. The 'afterlife' is just a continuation, or evolution if you will. Once you reach this state you continue to grow and learn, but in a more exestential way.

EDIT: By the way, I'm not Christian, or any 'mainstream' religion.
