Do you have to pay a monthly fee for world of warcraft?

I might actually consider getting WoW if this were the case, but as of now it's simply not worth the money.

I realize that it is worth the money for you guys, and that's fine. But I need variety. I don't play games enough to warrant that kind of investment and I usually like to play different types of games, rather than the same one constantly.

Too bad, you're missing out on a whole genre.

You misunderstood my point about the pricing plan. I said that it's ridiculous to pay $50 for a game that won't even work as a stand alone product. $50 buys you a box and a disc, not a game. You need to continually pump money into it in order to keep it running, and if you stop then the physical property which you purchased is now utterly useless.

Comparing releasing HL2 for free to my idea doesn't make sense. With HL2, you buy a game and you get to keep it, no matter what happens. With a MMO, you're essentially buying yourself the chance to buy a subscription service.

What you're really paying for with MMO games is timeshares, not the actual game, unlike say HL2. No other business which operates like this forces you into buying a separate product for it. You should be able to simply pay the straight monthly fee, or pay an up front fee - one or the other. I might actually consider getting WoW if this were the case, but as of now it's simply not worth the money.

You did a much better job at articulating the random emotions that were swimming in my brain.

And really, I'm not an MMO hater. You could actually call me a MMO fearer, because I have never touched one not because I dislike them, but because I'm afraid I'd like them too much. I have a lot of work to do outside of gaming, so I'm afraid a game as addicting as WOW would do wonders to destroy what's left of my life. Perhaps I use the cost as a justification for not playing. Let's go with that.

Technically you buy a product that lasts for 30days for $50 and i can't stress enough how much more gameplay hours you'll get in 30days than any other SP game on the market.

You know and maybe i'm too corrupted to think any different now, but the MMO genre is the only genre left that has a future. I've bought and played just about every half-decent to decent game of every genre out there on PC, PS1 and 2, N64 from tetris all the way to the latest and greatest half-life2 and games are getting worse...they are getting shorter, except for MMO's. They have potential left and the current ones all make a game better than a SP will ever dream to be.

Every genre has been done, done, done, done, done, done, done, done again a thousand times over. The last game that kept me excited for more than one day was FarCry, i don't know why, that FPS in particular kept me entertained for about 1 week, then it ended. Of course, this excludes WoW and the other MMO's i've played because MMO's, like i say...are different and can keep me entertained for 1+ year none stop and possibly the only genre that has some form of hope left in it and the possibilities for them as current are endless.

WOW is, for me, the ONLY MMO worth buying. ive played the trial of SWG, the trial of EVE online and the trial of planetside. Plus i hate EQ2.

SWG was ok... but the levels were far too boring. you start to pull your hair out when youve spent more than 5 minutes on the bland tatooine planet. EVE was just too boring.... mine, trade, mine trade, mine trade EXIT! i never want to see a black space filled with white dots again. EQ2 looks like a fantasy version of SWG... but the only good thing about it s the word "fantasy".

And as for planetside, well the concept and gameplay was class- as a galaxy (dropship) pilot i had a certain adrenaline rush out of flying my team-and being responsible for all their lives- straight into the heart of enemy territor, dodging all the bullets and ejecting onto the enemy fortress. then after capturing it and claiming it as our own, i would buy a new dropship- or failing that, i would hack into the system and steal a dropship, then evac our troops before we all got blown to smithereens. Planetside is the best FPS experience ive ever played- my first flight as a galaxy pilot was twice as good as anything i did in HL2. but there were only 2 types of structures, and EVERYTHING looked the same. plus there was nothing much to aspire to- you could try out everything in the test chamber, and you could scrap your skills and buy new ones.

All of the above MMOs offered something great, but fell flat on their face in more than one area. SWG had ambition, but the game was way to buggy and the levels were bare. EVE was so f'ing huge, but it was way too complicated and you had to mine hundreds of things to even be able to buy a decent gun. and planetside was great, but there was no character development and the world was all too similar.

but world of warcraft takes SWGs ambition, EVEs size, the team based rush of planetside and the fantasy setting of EQ2, and piles them into one amazing experience. there are hundreds of areas, thousands of possibilities. will you be a solo fighter who runs into the wild slaying things? or will you be a team based healer who supports your raid group? one thing is for sure- you will never get bored of WOW. have you got to level 60 with your dwarf? start again, this time being horde, and play a COMPLETELY different game with quests you have never done before and areas you would have previously been barred from.

THIS GAME IS WORTH THE MONEY!! THIS IS THE MMOS OF ALL MMOS!!! WORSHIP BLIZZARD!

are you a PR person from Blizzard?

awesome summary of the game though. spot on.

I am a blizzard fan but not a P2P Fan.
Personally my cousin is literally ADDICTED to what Guild Wars was at the World Preview Event. I mean ADDICTED. Such a fun game. I love the lighting affects and the gfx. I mean it has no monthly fee so thats a serious plus. The gameplay is super lovely.
Personally I agree that Wow(never played it, didn't get into beta) is probably fun as ANY blizzard game is. But did valve make us pay for the bandwidth for HL2? You did not have to pay to use it.(You didn't have to preorder off of steam to start dling it). And that was ALOT of bandwidth. I mean I get what you mean and I see perfectly why it requires a monthly fee.
What we need is a breakthrough in netcoding. Not so its 56k compatiable or anything. But so we can send less data, have it just as secure, and just as fast. If we can send less, then we use less bandwidth used per person. This can really add up and overall reduce costs.

I'd pay 15 bucks a month just to look at this! :O :O :O

Yes, that's actually my character, and yes, I'm actually wearing MAIL pants...
