Ok, given that there is a glut of posts complaining about HL2, I want to find out once and for all what ratio of people actually have problems.

So then, a poll. Nice and simple. If you own a legal copy of HL2, post up if you have/had problems.

If your only problem is steam taking a long time to validate, but less than 2 hours, and you have no other problems, please vote no problems, as this is imo, fair enough considering the strain on the servers.

However, if it was more than 2 hours, or you had stuttering or anything like that, post "Had problems"

*EDIT* Please do not use this to bitch about the problems you have had, I don't want this closed due to flaming. Comments on the progress of the poll only please.

Add a poll with 2 options for:

1) Yes, I have had problems.
2) No, the game has been fine for me.

Edit:

The poll diddn't appear when I first loaded the thread. Sorry.

No problems whatsoever with Steam. Only had stuttering which is pretty much well gone with the patch. It's still there a tiny bit, but far better than it was.

never had a single problem with it, steam loaded it fine, it unlocked fine (under 5 minutes) i loaded fine, played thru it without a single bug...

i guess i'm lucky or something :)

I am still suffering from the stutter issue.

Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz (Non Hyperthreading)
Windows XP Professional SP2 (Had issue with SP1 as well)
DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
1024MB RAM DDR400 2x512MB
RADEON 9800 XT (driver v.6.14.0010.6497) AGP 4x
SoundBlaster Audigy 2 (driver v5.12.0001.0444)
WDC WD36 10000RPM Raptor SATA 8MB Cache Hard Drive
Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Network Connection (driver v7.0.37.0)
Dell W2300LCD/TV(Digital) 23" LCD (Widescreen) 1280x768 (72Hz)

If I use a resolution above 1000x700 the stutering out of control problem happens to me.

Strange.

no probs at all, the stutering was fixed with the updates, the only probs where in the beginning, unlocking the gamefiles, and the fact that the hl2 DVD didnt play on my dvd drive so i run it on my dvd rom burner instead

no problem at all, unlocking and updating took about 30 mins (56k) since then it player perfectly

I've had a few problems.. first it started crashing to desktop randomly, then it suddenly stopped saving right, and when I installed HL2DM I started getting the launcher.dll error. But it's all fixed now, so.. meh :)

Minor stuttering when it was first released but that was fixed with the patch.

Steam worked perfectly and validated the game within 40 minutes using my university connection which only downloads from steam at the same speed as dial-up so it was pretty fast considering how fast it went for other people able to download at proper broad-band speeds. I blame my university for the incompatability with Steam since it is also has terrible pings for every online game I play that is non-steam related as well.

Overall I have had fewer problems with Half-Life 2 than with most games I have bought.

Haha, that's irony, on a poll asking if you had problems, getting an error with the poll:

But don't worry, it worked the second time, voted No, no major problems. Oh wait, yes one, HL2 wouldn't start on my laptop because the cd validation program (securom) screwed up.

I never had a problem (other than very very slight stutter which was fixed). Steam worked perfectly for me and from time of order to time I was playing was within 10-15 minutes.

And ditto with Mullinator...I have had less problems with HL2 than the majority of games I have ever bought.

fresh off steam: No problems
Post patch, massive stuttering. Reversed the things the patch changed, and it's smooth sailing again.

hl2 fine, steam was a bit of a bastard though. But it works and has continued working so I vote fine :)

Hrm. HL2 was fine for me, apart from Steam being an arse; I voted "I had problems".

Obviously, you're more forgiving than I am...

What do you mean steam being an arse? Did it actually work or did steam kill it somehow?

I never had a stuttering problem playing at 1280x800. In fact, I had no problems until the day after HL2 DM was released (Dec. 2) when Steam mysteriously stopped working. I get a "Steam has encountered a problem and needs to close" error before it even opens... I've deleted the clientregistry.blob file, reinstalled several times, etc. and I still can't open Steam.

So yes, I've had significant problems. I haven't even finished HL2 yet, and I've barely played DM.

I just had 2 lockups during the game, but I don't consider that as being a problem. No stuttering, except when the the game is loading certain things.

Took over an hour to decrypt the installed files, kept deciding it wanted to validate my HL2 install every other time I wanted to play it (taking 20 minutes each time), and stopped working for a while (preventing me from playing HL2) because it was trying to connect on ports outside the advertised range (the online documentation for this aspect of Steam was updated several days after I solved this problem myself... until then, it missed a good 10 ports off the end of the TCP port range...)

I posted and polled that I had no problems ... I have stuttering but it is not an issue that I consider bad enough that it hinders gameplay ... so I have to wait a few seconds before a screen loads ... so what? I open my console after that happens and more often then not the stutter/stall happnes because the game engine is looking for a texture or sound that *somehow* Valve forgot to put in the game (baffles me but I am not a developer).

Game is great, no issues or problems as far as I am concerned.

I had a problem with player models first time I started up and ran the game. The other guys at the train looked like messes of boxes that moved. They actually looked creepy, could see the faces sticking out of those monstrous creatures.
The real problem with it that I've had is the lack of a really good HL2DM.

There have been about 5 out of alot of games I've gotten that I've had no real problems with:
HL1&2
Diablo II
Warcraft III
Sam and Max Hit the Road

I only had the stuttering problem, and that was because the quality settings were on too high. On medium settings, the stuttering dissapears.

No problems here, and i'm running a 2.5 GHz P4 with a GF4 Ti4600.

install went fine, but i have slight shuttering problem before and after the patch. i have a GeForce4 6800 so pc performance isn't the issue. plus i have problems getting my 5.1 working.

I wanna change my vote cuz my Half-Life 2 stopped working

... What processor? There's a greater chance that your processor wouldn't be enough or your audio drivers would be out of date than your video card being the reason. I know that there really is an audio stutter issue though, one of my brothers has got a really good rig, but still has problems with it.

stuttering problems.
memory reference error on one machine that was fixed with last verification.
missing textures and sounds, although they seem to be less and less with each update.
background music not working.
long load times for "dynamic" menus background, and in between maps on mahcines with/less than 512mb.

dfferent machines get different issues...i've played it all up to corrupted downloads, which can't really be helped.

i have the stutter problems.. but for me, they have been very minimal and they really haven't bothered me too much.

I get a bit of audio stutter, steam seems to like re-validating my copy of HL2 and I had 2 lockups while playing thru for the first time.....

But other than that - nothing:E

I voted no major problems, since the stuttering was mainly after load points, the re-validating is most likely an anti piracy issue (tho it would be nice to have these times reduced), and the lockups occured while playing thru in one sitting...

All in all I've had less problems with HL2 than many of my other games.

i didnt have problems untill 2 days ago, when i got graphics errors, so i voted for 'yes'

rf

Not a glitch...no problems whatsoever. Infact, I don't recall ever having any problems with any games. Must be just lucky.

No issues at all. Started playing HL2 right after it was released and I have had no issues with Steam at all.
Correction, I had one issue with Steam...when Steam was beta oh so long ago.

Huh? The not-so-trustworthy friends list works for you?

Technically there were no problems. Okay, okay the game stuttered when going into a new area of the game and when saving. I swear, even though that patch was able to eliminate that problem, I'm pretty convinced that I got a frame rate boost even when I ran with texture detail and modela detail set at their highest (I got a GeForceMX440)

No more then 10 minutes to validate. No problems at all and a fast flawless process for me.
