DoD:S not Free??

First off lo all,i decided to pay your site a visit after i played with some of the HL2.net guys yesterday :O ,dont worry i left the AWP in the cupboard.

And so to my point i noticed in Valves packages for HL2 that you will only be entitled to certain games dependent on which package u buy. This strikes me as very strange and im sorry to have to say this but another atempt to get more money from our wallets.Lets take DoD,its free right?or did i miss somthing, there has never been a retail version, its a mod,now according to Valve you have to buy a "silver" package to gain accses to this free mod. This silver package will be more expensive than the basic "bronze" package im assuming so they are in affect now charging for the mod? Now dont get me wrong i dont mind paying for things and i have purchased all of the Valve software relating to Half Life.OF BS CZ and of course HL.So y now do Valve decide its time to start charging? Also for thoes of us who have ATI vouchers they are only entitled to the "bronze" package,so how do they get DoD? do they have to pay for the game again ie buy the silver package. And what about retail sales for people wishing to buy hard copies of the game,in the UK i have seen no indication of "bronze, silver or gold" from retailers and no sign of the collectors addition.

So DoD players who have ATI vouchers have been for want of a better word ripped off as they cant play the game they play and will have to buy HL2 again, this dosent seem right to me what do u think?

Just to clarify DoD is a HL mod so there is no reason to think it wouldnt have come with HL2 retail F.O.C. or downloadable through Steam.

And this is nothing to do with people getting all the games others have purchased in the passed for free with the "gold" package whine,im sure that the "gold" package price will more than make up for that as its clear Valve dont want to give anything away for free.

If you have an ATI voucher (like me) you can upgrade it (with money) to either a silver or gold (from bronze).

DOD:S is a differant game essentially... I couldn't imagine them NOT trying to sell it...

DoD was infact a retail game as well, published by Activision I think. The guys with ATI vouchers did not get ripped off, they get exactly what they always were getting - HL2 + its MP (CS:S). Also, it is possible to upgrade from the bronze package to silver/gold for a small fee.

Oh btw, welcome to the forums! :)

DoD has certainly been available as a retail game over here in the UK for a while now...

Hmm I still think its kinda lame for a company to hyjack a mod and start charging for it.
Do the guys that actually made it ever see a dollah of the profits made over their work?

Of course!!!

Let's not forget here that the DOD team is getting exclusive accsess to the source engine....

Eh? :) They work at Valve! I would imagine they get paid for it, too!

if you have to pay for DOD:S then save your money.

instead of paying for some 5 year old mod tarted up with a new game engine, but still essentially the same ugly looking 5yr old game, go and buy BATTLEFIELD 1942.

Oh and download the AWESOME Desert Combat mod for it.

I have always really hated BF1942....

The way it handles... I just really hate it ....

On a lan with pings like 10ms where everyone has beasty computers it may be bareable otherwise... I hate it

have you played Desert Combat?

I would think most counterstrike fans would love DC.

They do indeed now get paid a salary from Valve and I'm sure they all got a nice paycheck when DOD went retail ;)

Same thing happended to DC as to CS and DOD.

DICE (developers of 1942) bought them.

If you're all getting your pants in a twist over this, then you're going to be really upset when HL2 mods start costing via Steam. Imagine that, modmakers getting paid for all their hard work. It's utterly disgraceful.

The main problem with Desert Combat (and Battlefield 1942) in my opinion is the awkward troop combat. It just handles weird. CS and DoD, however, are soley infantry combat and execute it much better.

There is no "troop combat" - you are thinking of Call Of Duty.... unless you mean something else.

Yes, Day of Defeat isnt free. When it went retail, they knew of course it'd be a bad idea to force everybody to buy it to continue playing, so the retail version was technically still free, although you didnt get the upgraded GUI unless you purchased the game. But since DoD is going Source, it's a separate game now, meaning you have to buy it. Sad, but in reality, I dont see it as that much more expensive. And it's definitely worth the cost. It sucks to pay, but think of it this way. If you worked years on something and finally got the chance to get paid for it, wouldnt you?

You are legally obliged* to buy the silver version for HL: S, so you get DOD: S anyway.

*Not a legal obligation

Expect for the fact that BF1942 sucks ass and is a horrible engine...

Is it not err...deathmatchy enough for you.

If you buy the silver package dont you get all the old steam games. Well im assuming this is what this means "Valve's back catalog currently available on Steam." Although ive already got em all apart from CS:CZ. lol, like id want it.

Really, i think if you buy HL2, maybe through steam only. Then i should think you should get all official Source ports free but i dont mind if they make you pay for the rest, as long as valve put all the cash into Steam and further games.

so..if u buy hl2 in a shop u cant get dod,s for free?

and if u do have to pay for dod,s do u have to pay for it on steam?

nope it appears u can use your cd key as a credit on steam and just top up your account to what ever u want.

Thanks for all the replies guys, and by the by i dont think u can compare BF DC to CS or any other game it like chalk and chesse.

Thanks again. :E

All of you little penny pinching fudge packers that say mod's should be free should in fact be slapped within a inch of your tiny little lifes.

You've gotten off easy in the past years with mod's being free. But now the fact of paying a small fee of what is it $10 makes your want to go cry to your mommies. :flame: ARG!!!! LICK MY NUTS

$10 is chump change for HL:S and DOD:S.

/me hugs his $15 Ati coupon and adds $10 to it to equal $25 which equals HL2/DOD:S/HL:S/CS:S. Good deal. :)

yeah, stop bitching. You have to pay $10 for dod:s and hl:s!!! omg!! its teh end of the world!!!!111 To remake these games it takes lots of money from valve to fund the development. Do you want valve to pay its workers with cheese?! 10 bucks for TWO games is nothing so stop complaining.

of course its a rip off, but VALVe's in it for the money almost as much as Vivendi, why do you think they sue'd Vivendi first? Just look at the steam prices, 49.99 for a game with no actually CD or Case. 59.99 for the same game only with pictures and a used to be free mod and still no CD or Box, OMGz0rz wot uh teh crazeh teh gud d3al l0ololpl0olzzz.

now wheres the Valve nut huggers to say "lololo0l0olploplzzz Valve doesn't pws j00 n3-th1ng l0ololzzz j00 sux0rz teh big 11ne c4us3 valv3 pwnz m3 an' i sux0rz d3m 00f 1n Mi dr3amz lo0lololol0olzzz kthxbye.

Ok ****tard lets see your ass make a game for free.. and see how long it takes you to want your grimy little paws on some money from the community. You should really think before you open your little insolent mouth

damn cheap ****ers

This man is right.

If you were in Valve's position would you want to lose millions of dollars releasing a game for free.

They have already given you a whole bunch of mods with Half-Life. :|

Call me a traditionalist, but isn't part of the concept of a mod a free creation given by the community to the community?
Though my hat certainly is tipped to the DoD for making a stellar mod and $10 is a pittance (for me at least), I would cease to call DoD:S a "mod" in the traditional sense when it becomes a commercial product.

I completly agree that regulare DOD should be free, but when a company remakes the entire game with a new graphics engine and ask for ten bucks for it AND Half-life: source, they have every right to charge for it. And it is such a small fee for such a great game. Your not getting 1 game but TWO GREAT games for 10 bucks! that has to be the best deal ever made.

I bet a lot less people are going to play DoD:S than the original DoD...

I don't think that to be true. I believe anyone that has the money to buy a computer that can handle Source will be willing to put out $60 to play HL2, CS:S, HL:S and DOD:S. It really not that much if you think about it. You save 20 $ a week and you got yourself Silver after 3 weeks.

the whole point of mods at the start was to buck the system and make new free content! that doesnt seem to be the point anymore, with huge creation times, massive release hype, and commercial interest.
any good mod is going to be snapped up in an instant, and sold for profit.

If they're going to charge for this they should at LEAST add new content. No, they better not pull a CS:S on us and just pretty it all up, I'm talking about NEW gameplay, vehicles, maps, models, all that stuff.

CS:S dissapointed me, I'll be mad if they try to charge people for a pretty version of what they already have *cough* HL:S *cough*

At release, it is going to be like the current DoD version. Although they will continue to add to it and improve it with new maps and content.
Same with CSS, as far as I know.

CS:S will soon have vehicles, maps, and other cool stuff. They are just pressed for time due to the fact of HL2 being released soon. So don't be that disappointed with CS:S you'll get much more than you money's worth out of it just as you did with CS.(if you paid for it)

Mods are free because their devs want it to be, not because they should be.

DOD went retail quite a while ago, same as CS.

DOD can be downloaded for free same as always

You need steam to play the latest DOD, WON does not exist

DOD source is not the same game, its the same idea as a new game

DOD source will be full of new content, i know the team are working hard on this now.

a mod is exactly that, not a complete game, but a modification of an existing one, in this case HalfLife.

the retail version of dod is not a mod, you do not need halflife to play it, this is one reason its charged for.

The gold, silver and bronze packages are all online only deals in steam, this is why not retailers know about them.

DOD players have HL2 vouchers, not ati dod vouchers, this entitles them to a free copy of HL2

You DO NOT have to buy the silver package to get access to dod, the free mod.

You DO have to buy at least the silver package to get the new game DOD source.

You can pay a small aditional fee with the use of your HL2 voucher to upgrade to the silver or gold package to gain access to the release of the new game DOD source.

DOD source is not yet available, nor does it have a release date announced, therefore its not in the shops for the hard copy yet.

DOD source will have my voice in it.
