dod:s only on steam ?

hlfallout has reported that alternate payment methods will be supported , so ordering over Steam won't be a problem for people without credit cards

DOD:S won't be available within the HL2 retail package because Activision hold the publishing rights to Day of Defeat.

Activision may decide to release it as a full retail product, but that remains to be confirmed.

DOD:Source will never be released in the shops as part of a Half-Life 2 package because Vivendi own the rights to Half-Life and Activision own the rights to DOD.

Well, I sent an email to valve (which I don't think will be responded too) that said that I have a 56k modem. It usually downloads at 3.1 +/- kps. If HL2 is 6 CDs, it will be about 6 x 700Mb = 4200 Mb of files. Downloading at 3.1 kps, I get 376 hours of download. If you only have one phone line, you can't let it be download for 15 days. I prefer DOD over CS yet can't buy the box with DOD. Can't Vivendi and Activision get together and include this so people who can't download the whole game get DOD?

For those who will say get high speed, not available.

Sorry, why the hell should two publishers get together to sell DoD:S? Would it help either of them? No.

Activision want the money from DoD:S
Vivendi will sell throusands of HL2 units anyway, regardless of DoD:S. It wouldn't be worth the hassle.

My suggestion, order off Steam, get the GCFs off a friend on DVD. I'm *sure* at least one of them can help you!

(And to Counter_Strike, who really needs to sort out his attitude, see his other posts, you WILL get DoD:S on a Silver purchase don't worry. Good to see you actually read the thread)

well i'm gonna buy it retail anyway, I format every month, and downloading hl2 everytime would take up half my monthly volume on ADSL (10 gb), I read there are goign to be tohers mehtods to pay soon, (bank subscriptions and stuff), so I'll upgrade when dod:s is available

Still, you don't need to buy retail! Just download the files once, burn them to DVD or get a friend to do so! Cheaper than buying two editions

Formatting every month wouldent do anymore damage to a harddrive than installing stuff on a daily basis. Even if he is doing a low level format, which I HIGHLY doubt he is, its not really doing anything negative other than taking up time, when being proactive against slowdowns, such as spyware and junk like that, is a much better practice.

How many people install stuff on a daily basis? Reformatting is rather more drastic than installing stuff on a daily basis. Windows, programs, etc all need to be rewritten which, as one of my housemates can attest, shortens a HDDs life span. And then all the daily basis stuff needs to be reinstalled.
Now, I have nothing against reformatting in principle, but a good PC regime will prevent you needing to spend a whole day each month doing all that (and yes, it would take a whole day whatever someone says, since to get in back in it's *previous shape*, that's how long you would need)

Sorry this is off-topic, but Spybot can take care of spyware, reasonable PC safety and intelligence can prevent slowdown after ONE MONTH. every 4-6 months perhaps, but not every month. Anyways, my PC is still goign fine after 1 year of intensive usage. And that's saying something.

Formating a hard drive isn't more drastic, in a physical sense, then installing or just using the hard drive in general. The heads and platters inside behave the same during a format as they do the rest of the time.

There is no "format" setting in the hardware of the drive, the drive doesn't care if the drive access at this time is normal read/write operation or a format operation.

As for the thread topic about DOD:S being on steam only. Since Activision has the right to DOD for publishing, Vivendi can't bundle it with HL2. Also, DOD:S isn't ready yet, so it can't be bundled with HL2 anyway, since the HL2 discs have gone to duplication already.

I wasn't suggesting that formatting was different in any physical sense, but it does mean that more read/write operations are taking place than are strictly required for normal usage. Ho hum, we'll just have to agree to differ then, methinks

Back on topic, I find it rather humourous when people complain about stuff *that can never change*. E.g. since HL2 is already in duplication, DoD CANNOT be added. It won't. Can't.

Well I've had my HDD for about a year so far, and format pretty damn often (not once a month normally, but if you count multiple formats in a day (I've had some bad computer issues) probably more than 12 so far). Getting everything up to speed definately doesn't take a day, only a few hours after the Windows install, but then again, I've had practice.

Anyway, on topic, once you have HL2, right-click on it in Steam and there's a backup option. Use that, and then burn the file. And if you know anybody who has HL2, get them to do that for you, and then 56k will be no problem. If you're using DVDs, then you might as well do the same with some other games, just to fill up the disk (I've got DoD, CSS, HL2, HL1, and OP4 on one DVD I think (maybe not OP4, I can't remember)).

Um i think you miscalculated. Your download speed is in kilobits per second. The data is in megabytes. It would actually take you 180645 hours to download this.

An average 56k user should infact get 5.4Kb/s.

Way off, I can dl 300 megs within 20 hours.

It's also only 5 Cd's.

5.4 x 60 = 324 x 60 = 19,400 Kb/H \ 1024(thats 1 real meg)
18.98 Megs Per Hour Or 18.98 MPH(which I will be using).
18.98 x (5x700)
3500\18.98 = 184.4 hours on my 56k.
On his 56k it will get him:
10.89 MPH = 321 Hours on his 56k.

I x 1024\S = How long in seconds

For kb it would be.
I x 8 x 1024\S\3600

I x 8 x 1024\S

For MB it would be.
I\S\3600
I\S\60
I\S

I = Size of file in MB
S = Speed of connection in KB
Remember 1MB really equals 1024KB. 8kb = 1024.
