Doom 3. One of the best games I have ever played, but some of the sound effects are terrible, or terribly annoying. (omfg that sentry bot is annoying)

A footstep or punching a soda can is the same volume of a machine gun or pistol! Thats just one rediculous example of what encouraged me to create this sound mod.

For over 80 hours I've been working on a total sound overhaul mod for Doom3. you just drop it in your Doom 3 base folder and load up the game! It will not conflict with any other mods you may be using unless they are also a sound modification.

In a few more hours, possibly up to 3 more working days it will be complete.

A complete dynamic sound overhaul for Doom 3 that replaces .. i think im up to about 200 sounds now!

most sound mods only change about 10-30 sounds!

I've meticulously gone through every sound effect in the game and used powerful audio editing tools to transform this game into an epic warzone. From weapons to monsters, to item pickup sounds, to menu sounds and beeps and blips.

The plasma gun, pistol, rocket launcher and explosions alone made all this work worth it. Theyare nothing short of the latest hollywood movie quality sound.

The plasma projectile sound i got by taking the bfg projectile sound, reversing it, lowering the pitch and a few other tweeks. You will be in awe when you fire some rockets into a room of demons.

My goal is to have every sound in the game perfect.

If i couldn't find a suitable replacement sound I just tweaked the current sound for now by modifying the volume, pitch, length, frequency, also by cutting and pasting parts of other sounds.

I can't wait to share it with you so im going to release it ready or not as version 1.

You have to remember that it can take a while to change each sound. there are about 700 sounds in this game im guessing. its sometimes overwhelming finding where a sound goes. (it took me a week to find where they hid the footsteps, sentry bot, security armor pickup sounds) By now I know by memory where most things are located.

I must tell you that this is something to get excited about. Every sound effect in the game will have you screaming "***K YEA! THATS WHAT ITS SUPPOSED TO SOUND LIKE" or at least i do

I will put a link on my signature for a direct download as soon as I write a Readme file out for it. Credit goes to about 10 sources which i grabbed sounds from, along with sounds from a professional game sound contractor that did sounds for gamecube metroid games and more.

Also I did hundreds of resamples in the wonderful OGG vorbiz format which uses a fraction of the memory of WAV files. This isn't one of those memory hog sound mods that take up several megabytes of RAM. Nearly every sound sample uses the same or less memory than the sounds that came with the game and is of optimal sound quality.

this is going to totally eclipse any other sound mod for Doom3. Its been tedious, but well worth it! It literally makes it like a brand new game.

After I finish with this mod I will upload it for you guys so get your  DOOM 3  game installed!

My next project will be to attempt to alter some of the colors of the graphics in the game. ..the green mechgun should be black don't you think? ;)

Stay tuned.

I want a better machine gun and shotgun fire sound. The ones I have are 10 times better than the original sounds but they are still below my acceptance level.

They just aren't good enough

I'd also be interested in some different footstep sounds. The original ones annoyed the crap out of me.

I have altered the normal ones quite a bit (pitch, volume, bass)

anyway if you guys have access to any of these sounds I would appreciate it.

I'll start downloading and looking through sounds of various sound mods for all the action games I can think of.

I remembered Max payne having good sound effects. i might see if i can decompile their sound files.

awesome, the original sound was pretty weak, didn't match the great visuals, i'm assuming you removed the one that sounds like the marine is carrying spare change in his pocket?;)

awaits download link...

PS: i don't suppose you've fixed the annoying thing whereby the control pnel has to be set to 5.1 speakers before you can eneable surround in doom? i play all my other games on 7.1 and find it frustrating that i'll just fire up doom3 and then have to exit, change the settings in the control panel then re-enter the game, then reset them when i exit too:mad:

Ok i have been working all night and its really shaping up. I have just typed up the readme file for it and just want to tweak a couple sounds before uploading it.

its truly incredible and I can't wait to share it with you guys and get some feedback.

I have found a few really good sounds recently and I think I can go ahead and release a version 1. A version 2 should be ready in less than a week at this pace. Version 2 will likely be the complete final version, although If I get very ambitious, future versions will be made available. :)

You really owe it to yourself to try this mod since i spent 80 or more hours working on it so far.

If you own a PC to play games on it and you don't want to experiment with a modification to a PC game than you have no buisiness owning a game PC. I highly recommend an Xbox 360 in that case.

I am some what of a musician myself so you can expect a high quality sound mod.

You can expect a link to download this mod as soon as I upload it shortly. I will post it here and also in my signature as well so you can find it.

Good idea. The only sound I didn't like was the machine gun and I already changed that though, so everyone else enjoy this! :borg:

Machine gun, chain gun and shotgun were the weakest imo. Although my favourite weapon in D3 was actually the shotgun despite its pathetic sound. It got replaced by the DBSG in RoE though. :)

Good luck btw, VirusType2. Looking forward to it.

Ohh, that's great. I accidentally deleted all the sound for doom 3 so when i play it, there isn't any sound ( I dont have the disk) Now I'll be able to play it again.

Yea the change in the marine's pocket is no more. obnoxious footsteps sound fixed for all living creatures

I got a new Mechgun sound and got the shotgun sound a little better today and thats what prompted me to go ahead and release this mod.

The chaingun (although i might lower the gain on it in a future version) is delicious.

But my favorite sounds are the ones i created from scratch.

Its just all-in-all, a totally different beast. The minute you load the game you will start to get a hint that everything is different. Sometimes I just changed the pitch on a sound becuase it gets old hearing the same sound effect over and over for the year that this game has been out.

By the way. December 10th marks Doom's 12th birthday. Although I didn't release this in time for Doom's birthday, I want to release it on December 12th. Since this is the 12th year.

file of 23 Megabytes is ready to upload but where? I tried a couple places so far.
I've been looking around. Anyone know where i can upload copyrighted sound effects from Id software and others? (readme with credits attached)

I just want to share this with you guys man or i wouldn't go through all this trouble

Oh and by the way it only replaces a fraction of the sound effects even though there are probably hundreds included, so you will need to re-install the game to get the most out of it Jangle. 99% of the environment sounds (like ambient noise) are unchanged becuase they are amazing already.

Noes! Does anyone know where I can download the original Doom 3 sounds, then? Becasue I scratched the disk really badly and it won't re-install.

how about you upload a couple of sounds? I need to hear if it's all you make it out to be. :)

Where can I upload this mod?

Im not having any luck uploading it anywhere. Websites are freezing up and making it a real bitch to try and upload.

Right now its 22 compressed MB of 5-30KB Sound effects. What does that tell you? Thats alot of sound effects.

There will be no single sound uploads. Its like if you are interested then you should download it. If not than don't. Im telling you that I refuse to even play the game without these sound effects.

Now that it sounds so sweet, its hard to stop playing long enough to continue working on my ambitious project. I want this to be THE sound mod for Doom 3 for its lifespan of eternity. You can only use 1. That was the drive for me to create my own. becuase I liked some sounds from 1 mod, and other sounds from another mod, and I just couldn't settle for anything less than both sound mods. Well thats what got me started. :)

15 years from now and more.

How could i go wrong? The foundation is 100's of samples from 9 sources ( 6 of them other sound mods) 1 is a Sound effect company that did sounds for many popular video games including the game cube metroid games, and the final source is Doom 1, 2, and 3. with Audio editing by me.

I'd like to go to bed, I wonder if anyone has uploaded a mod before and could help.

I've never uploaded anything before besides my 22kb avatar and i have to become a registered user at 10 different websites. But each one is just freezing up and requires "acceptance" before anything could happen anyway. ITs NOT WORKING >=/

does anyone still play Doom 3?

uhhh thats like saying does anyone still play Doom 3.

How about does anyone still play RE4 or HL2 or WoW. or does anyone still play Doom 1.

The answer is an astounding, "HELL YES"

Upload it here: http://doom3.filefront.com/

Gamespot will also upload files for you too: http://www.gamespot.com/downloads/index.html

nope. filefront has a strict copyright policy.

I can't find any way to upload anything on gamespot either. No links

Aight well i just spend a few hours trying to download to several game sites and in the end they just stoped responding after sitting there for a half an hour. Frustrating. I just finished at this one site and after about an hour it finished uploading and then before the file was completed it said, "error 2mb limit." you think you might want to tell someone this on the webpage. ****ERS.

Anyway so, my brother is giving me my own website for Christmas. That was his idea, so once i get that I will put it up on there. It will be like sending some demons back to hell for Jesus's birthday. What would jesus do?

This could be considered a full version, but there is one thing I can think of that might be strange and beta-ish...

I was testing various voices for the pain sound effect for the marines that become zombies from hell. so sometimes when they take damage they make one type of sound effect, and other times they make a different type of sound effect. 2 pain sound effects from 3 sets of 2 sounds, for a total of 6 alternate pain sounds. in a rush to get this to you i hadn't decided on what to go with yet. the ones that sound like a human getting rocked might need to be 3 decibles louder. also one of their screams is very long and even continues if they gib (explode into a mess of guts) I was supposed to cut the end off of it, but it slipped past this version.

Anyway overall the ****ing thing rocks.
Let me know what you think when you get it, and in about a week ill be ready with a full version.

A third version may contain music written by me and shit.

30 minutes untill the download link is available. :dork:

worth ever minute. you are going to flip out I think... (wait till you throw some grenades and launch some rockets into a room of barrels and shit dude.. LOL sick I especially like the plasma gun right now, since i just created that sound this morning.:smoking:

You got to give me feedback. .. So I can know what to change if needed. thats the deal.

oo cant wait till after crimbo for this then, im going to get xfi fatality fps and 7.1 thx cert surround sound :p

Download Now.

OK ITS HERE!

cLICK THE LINK IN MY SIGNATURE BELOW!

:D

Its a sound only mod. does not change any other aspect of the game and will not conflict with any other mods unless they are a sound mod in which case i recommend you remove that file first so you don't get strange side effects.

Let me know what you think and post in this thread please.

YAYS! Does this require Doom 3 to be updated to the latest version?
Wow, only 23 mb...

Just tried it out... not bad. I can't say I like the new automatic weapon sounds a ton, but overall, it's definitely good. Also, what's the name of the song that plays in the main menu? It's very cool.

That's exactly what he said...

to use the mod
i don't think you would need a certain version of the game. it should take the sounds and read them regardless. its just a sound mod.

Can you be more specific about what sound ? the gunfire? the reloading sound? which automatic gun? the mechgun the chaingun, or the plasmagun?

Thanks for trying it, and especially for telling me what you think. I bet if you went back to the original sound effects you would probably change your mind and never want to play without the sound mod again though. lol

Its hard to go wrong by taking the original Doom 3 sound effects, and taking the best sounds from 9 other sources and combining them into one pack, along with lots of sound editing to make sure things are the correct volume and stuff.

Every sound is either improved or left alone in my opinion. But yea, every sound effect can be replaced if something better comes along. Nothing is set in stone. I would really like some more time. I wanted to hear what other people's reaction thats all. I normally wouldn't have uploaded a ver.1 for like a month from now but its Doom's 12 birthday

Its a work in progress, i just wanted to give you a taste, although it could be considered complete, this is really just a scratch on the surface.

I just want to make it clear that the reason I made this mod was because
1) i did not like many of the original sounds (hated them in fact)
2) I could not use more than 1 sound mod. they are not compatable together
3) I could not decide on what 1 mod to use becuase each had sounds i liked.

So I compiled a couple sound mods, but then i could never be satisfied. The better the sound I had for a particular thing, the more fun this game became.

I just learned a new editing technique yesterday, I plan to do every sound in the game if i have to untill everything sounds right. I like this game, its fun to dodge and then punish them. I just hated all the squealing and screaming of some of the monsters, so you can expect to see alot more changes here as well.

Tomorrow i've got my work cut out for me. I really have a lot of plans for this mod but I think its Pretty complete as it is even. :)

Enjoy.

Okay, I've only tested all the weapons so far.

Pistol - This is good, better than the original. Stick with it.

Shotgun - Better than the original but it sounds more like a rifle than a shotgun imo. It's a good sound though.

Machine gun - Slightly better than the original but still pretty weak.

Chaingun - This is good, much better than the original. I say stick with this.

Plasma gun - This is the only one that's not better imo. I prefer the original because it had a really good sound and it really fitted well with the weapon.

Rocket Launcher - Quite good and it got a great sound for the explosion. Stick with it.

But overall it's good so far. I haven’t heard how the enemy sounds are yet, I’ll try it tomorrow. Thumbs up from me though.

Thank you very much for the input

here is my response

shotgun:
Yea, thats sort of how i feel, the shotgun is most definately a place holder sound untill i find better, that much i can tell you. i cannot for the life of me find a good shotgun sound. if its a good sound, its like .5 seconds long and cuts off way to early, but i will find something. its still better than anything else i can come up with yet though... I really love the reloading sound effects for this. the original ones were so ****ing annoying (along with every other sound on the shotgun and those footsteps .. :barf: :dead: ) Ive got a real shotgun right here so If my digital camcorder can pick up a good sound I can go outback and get some pure-from the source-shotgun sounds. Thats what my brother suggested, i hadn't even thought of that

plasmagun:
While I agree that the original plasma sound was pretty good, the impacts have been improved (shot a wall near you and listen to the crackling) the firing sound is just somethign i created last night i think and i loved it, but its probably just becuase its different, and not so much the fact that its better. the reloading sound i just threw the bfg reloading sound in there temporarily.

rocketlauncher:
yea i agree this is way better than I could have hoped it would turn out and if anything i will just tweak a few things like the reload sound

pistol:
yea this is the best pistol sound i have found so far, it makes it alot of fun to use the pistol, which is actually a useful weapon for taking out solo monsters at range. the clip holds exactly enough, so you can take any regular monster out with a full clip if you hit with nearly every shot. good job on that iD I took 3 samples clip in/out and mixed them to get the full reloading sound, i think the original sound took 2.3 seconds or whatever and mine perfectly times with the animation at approx 2.027seconds long sound (for example)

chaingun:
yes. this sound was the reason I started this mod. i liked this chaingun sound but didnt' like the rest of the sound mod as much as some other mods out there and took me like 15 hours to figure out why i couldn't get this sound to work once i started teaching myself how to mod these files. I did it, and by then, i knew where everything was quite well. I might lower the volume on it a notch so i can hear monsters get pelted with a rain of fire

machine gun:
I tried a dozen configurations (like all the weapons) sub machine guns, silenced guns, really loud guns, all kinds of sounds. I like this one the best so far, its got quite a punch to it. I just got this sound this morning so i haven't modified it at all, there are so many ways i can slightly alter it and the end result can be quite different. but im loving it if not only for the fact that its new to me, also because well it just sounds the best so far. the horrible reloading sound effect is gone now, i created my own from several samples of actual weapons reloading and inserted silence to perfectly match the animation speed with the sounds, just like I have done with all the weapons

FOR WINDOWS XP THE NORMAL LOCATION IS HERE
click on MY COMPUTER
your local hard drive (c)?
Program Files folder
Doom 3 folder
base folder

just copy and paste or drag and drop the sound folder (my mod) you downloaded and put it in the base folder and thats it.

OK WOW. I've gotta hand it to you. I've been playing for a while, this sound pack has SERIOUSLY grown on me. I still dislike the Plasma Rifle firing sound, but everything else is A+. You should be proud of yourself here.

Oh! and by the way.. If there was a sound included in my mod that you don't like and would rather Doom 3 use the original sound included with Doom3 then just remove that sound from the folder and Doom 3 will use its own sound.

Example you don't like the plasma gun fire sound? Or the plasma gun reloading sound?

No problem.

all of the sounds in my mod are in a folder called sound

go into the sound folder.

Remember its in C:/program files/doom 3/base/sound.

The plasma gun sound effect is in either weapons or ed folders. In one of these 2 folders, find a folder called plasma and just remove the plasma_fire sound and/or the plasma_reload sound from that folder or delete it. there are 2 folders for the plasma gun one in ed and one in weapons folder.

You see Doom 3 has its own sound files hidden and compressed in a pk4 file.

So if you take the Sound folder that you downloaded from the link in my signature, and remove it from the base folder, doom 3 will go back to using the normal sounds. You do not have to re-install, and you are not deleting any necessary files for Doom3. All the original sounds are kept completely seperate, and doom will use them if it doesn't find a sound appropriately named in the sound folder (my mod folder).

another thumbs up, only had a quick blast in delta labs but the pistol/chain gun sounds are infinitely better. still gonna take a while to convince me about the plasma gun, it definately has a better "thump" when it kicks but the overall sound isn't as pleasing to the "woomp" you got with the old sound (will still be keeping yours though, gotta love the bass kick through my 6700s)

btw where did you get that menu music? it's got everything, choral, spanish guitar and did i detect a hint of the old perfect dark music in there or am i going mad?:D

yea that song definately brings out alot of emotions in me. The spanish part i could have done without, if not only becuase it doesn't seem to fit while looking at mars, but the song is special so it stays for now.

It reminds me of the really nice chorus from the medal of honor soundtrack (dont remember the episode) it was an old ass game. the first one to release on PS2

Originally i was going to have a very quiet menu so that if you press ESC to pause the game .. like for example to answer the telephone-it would be silent. I also have not cast out the idea of writing my own music for the game. I have about 350 songs I have created over the years. Plenty of them would be fitting since I often write very dark, digital futuristic shit.

But I found that song in the old school doom sound mod. Im not sure where its from or who wrote it, but I have no desire to remove it from the GUI (pause) menu at this point. ( i like it alot)

i think i need to include a better readme file that gives more exact details about the sounds i included. however at 8 downloads last time i checked this shouldn't be a big deal.

I found that old school sound mod at PCgamemods.com

About the plasma fire sound - where i spent many long hours trying to get sounds together for other weapons, I, like yourself, thought the plasma gun was fine how it was. since the BFG normally has a pretty corny plasma fire type sound and i had replaced this with the original BFG sound firing sound, i had a extra plasma gun sounding sound to play with. it was slightly different than the plasma gun. i think i resampled it in reverse with a -40% pitch and tried it out and I ****ing loved it!

Im not set on it, its just the sound for the moment and i love it. I don't want anything to sound like it doesn't belong, thats one of my biggest gripes about sound mods is that the sound doesn't match or something.... anyway i've been awake like 60 hours. g*night

New version 1.1

approximately 60 more sounds for a total of about 260 improved sounds in this version.

This version is MUCH more complete.

changes:
trite(spider), imp, possesed soldiers, revenant(flaming skulls), pinky (huge 4 legged beast), fat new shotgun_fire, chaingun_fire(cleaned up) and many more.

Your going to love it!
Have fun!

there are some sounds in this version that will be replaced by next version so if you want to shape future versions you should take them for a test.

Next version will change the sounds of several monsters including the Rocket launching Skeleton, many ambient atmospheric sounds, and much more

:sniper: :borg:

Only problem with 1.1 is when the monsters teleport in to fight you can't tell what direction they are coming from.

Its already fixed with an AWESOME replacement sound on my version 1.2 beta ;) with bass that shakes the house. :)

Version 1.3 (near final)

version 1.2 i didn't bother to post but i did have it in my signature.

D3DynamicSoundOverhaul
VERSION 1.3
for Doom 3
THE MOST complete version yet with another 100 or so sound improvements since ver1.1 The improvements are drastic. The sounds I have selected are perfect.

Nearly complete here. Right now im working on 1.4 which will improve all of the ambient sounds that need it. then after that .. 1.5 will include a couple finishing touches like a sound effect when you load up the game to let you know the sound mod is active.

This version 1.3 improves all but maybe 1 or 2 of the monsters. The improvements in this area are huge and the monsters sound like monsters.

The shotgun, machine gun, and chaingun, handgun, bfg, hand grenades and rocketlauncher have been tweeked to perfection, aside from a couple small improvements you may not notice that i will hopefully get around to soon. the Plasma gun is coming together nicely as well.

All item pickup sounds have been improved 10 fold and 1 or 2 of them will be improved further in future versions.

What you can expect is to get blown away.

It also includes highly improved locked door beeps, monsters teleporting, monsters burning up sound like they are sizzling into ash. The list goes on and on.

Everything is incredible and im really proud and happy to share this with you. Im doing it for myself becuase it makes the game that much more enjoyable. I can't wait to show it off to my brothers.

I can hardly tear myself away from beating the game for the 3rd time. I only stop playing when i encounter a sound I know i can make better.

If I wasn't working so diligently on 1.4 I would upload a before and after example so you could hear the difference. Just try it. Comments are highly welcomed.
