Doom 3 Total SOUND Overhaul Mod

WOW, this sound mod is by far the best one yet! I recommend that all download it!

I don't know, I didn't really care for it. Something about it didn't appeal to me.

The imp screetch dosent seem to work...
Or they were just recorded at such a low volume I cant hear them over the rest of the game.

Hey why dont you list some things that you liked in there and what you would like to see in the next one, Then you would not be disappointed.

version 1.6

That was one of the main things that I didn't like about the Doom3 sound effects. Everything is screaming and wailing away in my ears, it was really f'd up, especially at high volumes.

Monsters that screamed in high pitches have all been re-done with growls like a ferocious beast-like monster. Some of the monsters had sound effects like they had some serious diarrea. I've combed every folder in the game and ive got a few more folders to go through. Simple sounds in the game that tended to get on my nerves really bad after a while have been remastered.

The imp sounds have been changed to growls, with a few sounds syncronously mixed with the original Doom sound effects. Blasting an Imp backward in a mess of blood is just like it was in Doom 1 & 2 except much better in Doom 3 of course. The sound effects of some of the pain and death sounds in D1&2 were what made the game so great.

Nearly all of the monsters sounds have been improved tremendously.

Earlier I posted that I had changed all of the monster sounds but i had forgoten about another folder containing a half dozen more monsters. Since then, I think I have changed all but a couple of the monsters. The only one I really want to change that I haven't changed yet is the revenant. (skeleton with the rocket launcher) I've changed 1 of his sounds so far but need a new source of sounds for the rest. He deserves a much more fitting sound.

None of the bosses have been changed becuase they were right-on.

you are correct about missing sounds.

there were many sounds not working. I found a bug affecting some of the sounds. I think its all fixed but I need more play testers.

I have improved about 50 more sounds. for a total of a few hundred sounds that I feel i have either improved slightly or massively.

The weapon sounds are really starting to sound amazing for the most part and have been improved further.

Its really coming together.

The latest version 1.6 beta is about 200% better than the last one I uploaded before my internet crashed right after I uploaded 1.3

It fixes "all" the bugs in all the previous versions and includes dozens more improvements.

VERSION 1.6

Can't understand how anyone could "not really care for it" I wouldn't want to even play the game without this mod. If you don't like it, you could say "well i liked the <insert sound here> but I prefer the original sounds" or whatever. It never even crossed my mind that anyone wouldn't like it. I find that unbelievable :p

I need play testers.
please let me know if you hear any missing sounds. I noticed 1 environment sound missing so far in the first few levels of the game. Also a known bug is half the time it doesn't make a sound when you pick up the hand grenades. As soon as I get a chance I will fix those. I'll have to check it out when i have more time.

Im going to my oldest brothers house to do some carpentry work for him. He is a professional programmer who is a doom fan so Im going to show him what i've done and see if i can get some insight on these sndshd files (sound shader)

I've improved the sounds of all the weapons further as well. I have multitrack mixed an MP40 sound into the mechgun now, this will be changed probably by next version. I don't really care for it, but it still sounds pretty cool.

Other than that most weapons are sounding incredible - especially the handgun.

I have improved some doors, elevators, and ambient sounds as well.

I've got a couple new sound altering effects like the phaser I've been using with amazing results. Let me know what you think of everything. thanks

Have a fun weekend.

Well, you do know that people have opinions right? Not everyone is giong to like it. Besides, I've grown accustomed to the original sounds.

I'll try the latest version to see if there's been any favorable changes.

EDIT - Rapidshare isn't letting me download it.

EDIT #2 - Okay, I was finally able to download it. It still doesn't appeal to me. The sound on the weapons is way to low. It doesn't pack that punch nor the clarity that the original sounds have.

The imps have that old school sound that some may like but I prefer the screeching and hissing. The death scream that they let out when you kill them is really unnerving. I hate to say so many negative things about it but it does need some work. Instead of putting out tons of versions, why not just take your time and really tweak some things?

Things I do like:
-pistol and shotgun reloading sounds.

Hummm, You clearly have the ''Made in china'' speakers then. If you can not hear the impact

I've tweaked about 300 sound effects and I love every one of them or i wouldn't have changed them.

All I have done is tweak it, so the fact that you said "i should spend some time tweaking it" was funny. Thats fine if you don't like it. I was surprized, but mostly by the fact that you criticized me instead of critiquing me.

90% of the monster sounds are done and 90% of the environment and misc. stuff is done.

finding the perfect sound for the weapons is so hard. If it was easy ID would have done it in the first place >.>

Its the sound effect you will be hearing over and over for the entire game so this is the most crucial area.

I have tried over 100 sounds for the shotgun and don't like any of them. Do you know how much time that I wasted on things like that? It do manage to find a slightly better sound once in a while so it is improving.

The fact is, when you change 100's of things in a game, there is a great chance for human error, so there were a couple of sounds that for one reason or another didn't execute.

Most everything works right now. There is a sound effect that I know of that doesn't work. Its that incredibly annoying gigantic blue lazer beam thingy, and I just haven't had a moment to fix it - or maybe i did i can't remember now.

I pretty much know what folder every sound effect in the game is in now. There are about 1000 sounds in about 300 hundred folders so that was the hardest part - just finding where things can be found and then trying to find where it was that i found it, and again when i needed to put a new sound in there, then it had to be correctly named. Its very very hard.

Anyway, I put out each version becuase its no sweat off my back. press a couple buttons and it uploads it. I figured there would be dozens of you that would appreciate the hundreds of hours that I invested. People desperate for a good sound mod for Doom3. I plan to change that. Like i said I want this sound mod to be synonomous with doom3. years from now even. There is no doubt in my mind that it will be, at least in my circle.

It was pretty exciting at first since I had been actually doing it. making a sound mod for the first time. I guess I wanted to share that excitment with everyone. I told everyone that it wouldn't be finished untill like 2.0 or 3.0 but still the amount of changes is huge so i wanted to share it and see if anyone liked it.

This time was well spent becuase I appreciate EVERY subtle change. The fact that at any moment I can change anything the way I want puts me in the position to enjoy it the most - obviously.

Where there is an annoying sound, i changed it. I've beat the game 3 times and It's pretty easy for me on Veteran mode, so I guess any change - even the slightest - makes the game feel new again.

I figure whoever enjoys it - since everyone else said positive things about it - would love to have the best version.

I won't release another version untill i feel every sound is right.

I have 2 huge subwoofers and many sounds I have added have had 2-20 times the low frequency responce over the original sound. My speakers can go below 40hz on the sound spectrum.

If it makes a sound even better, i have added a bass boost to certain sounds, but never to the point of distortion.

For everyone else you may not hear this if you don't have at least 1 sub. 2 little PC speakers aren't going to do it justice.

You can't hear the punch? Thats the funniest thing you could have said since this game shakes my house down with theatre quality presentation.

The original sounds for all of the weapons are pretty much a joke to me, and are more fitting for cap guns.

No disrespect for id who put nearly 1000 of the most incredible sound effects but many of them im thinking the guy who put them in there was tone deaf or in a rush or something, becuase many of them were horrendously off-pitch. And the fact that some of these backround sounds loop every few seconds the little backround sound becomes like a broken record that is quite annoying.

I guess if you like things screaming in your ear then just stick with the original sounds. I can't stand that shit.
A monster should not sound like a pig getting burned alive IMHO
:)

Edit: I appreciate the compliments on the reloading pistol and shotgun sound fx. Those are some of the few sounds that I created from scratch so that means even more to me that you liked those ones Satch. I wouldn't even mind sending you a folder with just those reloading sounds if you wanted.

I spent some time last night thinking about punch and I came across a crucial new sound for the mechgun. It was a little loud but a great sound. I lowered the volume a bit on it and was therefore able to add +12db bass boost at 100 or 200hz.(can't remember, whatever sounded better) teh bass punches you in de face. now the chaingun sounds very tame compared, so ... /sigh

This is so much work. I never would have thought.

Sound modding sounds easy enough but its hard as a anything. Doom uses some sndshd files and defenitions files that I don't have a clue how they work.

I don't understand why there are 9 sound variations of 1 particular action, but the game always uses the same sound - the first one. It does this even on a fresh install. Its pretty stupid. I can't find any help or info either. There has to be a reason for having 4 different "death" sounds for a particular monster, but they always make the same "death" sound. Thats a shame, and its something I'd like to fix. The only 2 reasons I could think of for this would be for in a multiplayer game each player would have a very slightly different weapons sounds, etc. or the other reason could be that it chooses 1 of the several sound variations when it loads up the level - keeping RAM requirements to a minimum. I need to play-test more to find out if this is true either way.

Well, Since i hadn't had so much time to playtest since i was doing so much sound editing I hadn't noticed untill a day or so ago that it does this, so I've been making sure the best sound I have available is the one it plays everytime.

I also fixed many sound "bugs". the problem is that it's very hard to test the sounds of the monsters becuase they don't want to stand around and make noises for you, they just want to kill you. But mainly becuase there are only certain monsters on certain levels. So making changes to particular monsters i may not come across for a day or two is why sometimes things go untested.

I've learned so much but I feel so in the dark. ... More later

I have the Logitech Z-5300s. :| It's by no means a piece of junk. You clearly don't know what the hell you're talking about.

Well then you might want to turn up the base because this sound mod makes my room vibarate!

Every game that I've played sounds awesome. The bass rocks but it just sounds muffled with this mod.

ohhh ok now i get what you are saying, FYI the shotgun sound is going to be replaced by a real shotgun that he recorded so I hear and PS that is the same system I have on my computer, It rocks

Doom 3 uses mono sounds for 97% of its sound files. This always has a way of making things sound less bright. I wouldn't say muffled though.

Also, I thought some of the sounds - like loading the pistol were very chintzy sounding with cheap sounding highs.

Sounds like that have been modified or replaced

Lowering the pitch significantly can sometimes make a sound less bright sounding. For example the pitch of the wailing screams of the imp sound fx for example have been lowered like 50%

The sound fx are remastered in the same quality Doom 3 uses - or else it wouldn't read the files. it is quite strict. Meaning i cannot use a lower quality or higher quality recording.

F.Y.I. the OGG Vorbis sound format used offers a higher souind quality and is less memory consuming than MP3's - and requires no licensing since its creator didn't wish to make a profit from it.

I have a nice Audio Editor that makes most tasks a breeze so its no big deal

The volume of all the sound effects really need to be normalized, especially the weapon sound effects.
Some of them are 2x as loud as others. (Pistol is REALLY loud)

Also, why dose the shotgun have 3 different sounds, all of which sound really different?

WhiteZero said:

Yea the pistol is starting to bother me as well. I had reduced the volume of it, but it just sounds better at the volume it was intended to be at.

I can't normalize a sound file that is recorded with distortion. Well i can but its soundwave is all clipped off. Leaving it with the same distortion sound but quieter. I like it but yes I guess it is a little loud.

I think some of the explosions might be clipping too, ill have to see what I can do. I can try lowering the volume on them again and see if i can get used to it, but if the sound is all cliped i'll have to replace those particular sounds.

Everything sounds really powerful on my sound system

It's really fun to get to play the game when i finally get a sound just the way I like it.

Forget everything.

Here's Version 1.7 ( at my house its really 1.9) but i named it 1.7 since i didn't upload any since 1.6.

I'm Nearly done with the entire sound effects part.

I might start improving some of the graphics, but I know that once i start I would never be finished. Im sure it would be fun though.

Also, why dose the shotgun have 3 different sounds, all of which sound really different?
The shotgun didn't sound that much different. It was 3 variations of the same sound. I was looking for you guys to help me decide on a sound.

It was a beta version.

It wasn't even trying to be a version that you can just download and have a nice day. I only made version 1.0 useable as a standalone - "no bugs" type deal.

Version 1.6 was buggy and had some place-holder sounds and was crap compared to this.

I thought you guys would want to help me test it out :)

I figured you would be like "oo the <insert sound here> is so much better! ogmsafasdfilalsdfm perfect!

Since version 1 it has been a work in progress - in fact I had hundreds of my working sounds in there that weren't even being used. I was testing different sounds and left them in the folders.

I was looking for positive feedback. I already know whats wrong with it - Im looking for feedback on whats right with it so I can think twice before changing the things you like.

Anyway I have mixed a really powerful sound for the shotgun in this version, i just can't get enough of it. It was so ****ing hard to make this sound. IT has so much Punch Satch will be sure and let me know im sure. :)

OK from now on, each version I release will be perfectly working (hopefully) I have spent weeks play testing this game and don't notice ANY missing sounds or sounds that don't sound right.

Im sure I've got at least 99% of it working and 91% of this thing complete.

I want you to try this version and tell me what you like. It will be asumed what you don't like. It's likely the things you don't like - I don't like either but cannot make it any better at this time.

Don't just load up the game press a few buttons and say you tried it. Just play the game where you left off, and play for a hour or two.

If you just keep testing the guns firing and not actually enjoying playing the game then don't even bother commenting.

This version is fully working. And very professional. Good night and have fun

From the moment you boot up the game you will realize why I dubed this mod a Total Sound Overhaul.

It - in my opinion - improves hundreds of the sound effects in the game that i felt needed to be.

SPECIAL NOTE: ON MY PC IT SOUNDS BEST WHEN YOU GO INTO THE GAME OPTIONS AND SET THE VOLUME TO MAX, BUT ON MANY AUDIO SYSTEMS IT MAY SOUND BETTER ARE ABOUT 80% VOLUME IN THE SYSTEM MENU (FACTORY PRESET IS 80%)

The chaingun sounds particularly awesome at max volume but I bet some speakers cannot handle it when many things are blasting through the speakers at once - like several explosions and gun fire at the same time. Try both ways or in-between

This is a cumulation of nearly 100 hours of hard work on my part alone. It was a pain in the ass but had many rewarding moments .. like version 1.7

so, while I greatfully welcome comments, but if you can't say something nice about my mod in addition to any suggestions then don't post at all, becuase I'm likely to get furious if you just say it sucks, becuase I think it is FabulousTM

1.0 already had many new sounds but version 1.7 is just so much better in every way.
(it was ALOT OF WORK)
since version 1.6, I have included new sounds for:
Grenades
Shotgun
Machine gun
Chaingun
Plasmagun
Many Ambient sounds have been altered
Monsters sounds have been nearly perfected ( you will notice 3 monsters have a few sound effects from Doom 2 mixed in there and I think it makes this game rock )
bullet impacts sounds are much better
Many sounds have had their volume better adjusted to Be more dynamic. a gunshot is supposed to be louder than a footstep yeah? LOL :) To compensate i increased the sound of the monsters screaming in pain and dying so you can hear them over the loud gunfire.

and much more of course...

id software had included extremely quiet guns that were just ment to make you feel weak or something.

With my weapon sounds, you have a realization that if you can hit these guys - particularly in a vital area, you can really devastate them, even on the hardest skill settings. The sounds just makes the guns feel more powerful. Maybe becuase they put you in the game more and you are trying so hard and aiming well.

Get good at this game, it gets better the better you get. Once you have beaten the game, you can concentrate on playing the game on a harder skill setting and just battle constantly, since you won't be getting lost all the time (its a long game)
:)
This game gets better when you get good enough to know how to fight everyone without getting hit (which is not easy but it's almost always possible)

A few tips:
Hold Run to dodge/strafe more effectively. The imps will try to fake you out, throwing a change-up ( a slow fireball ).

Wait untill he throws the fireball to dodge, don't dodge early, he will calculate for your movement and get a direct hit. Also, there are many attacks in this game that you can DUCK! So DUCK!

And Don't miss!

Maybe this will help?
Flashlight = the only weapon that lights your path and its very powerfull - it can take down monsters in 2 well timed hits
Fists = practically useless unless you get the berzerk powerup
Pistol = great for zombies, long range and for when you just need to finish off an imp or something
shotgun = Leathal at very close range, can hit multiple targets of tightly grouped groups of monsters, or when you have cover to duck or strafe behind in between shots
machine gun = great for long range (long halways). its relatively low power is made up for the 60 shot clip and high rate of fire.
grenades = best for when you know what to expect and can "cook" the grenade so it blows up on target instead of bouncing everywhere. Huge damage but these can take you with it fairly easily
chaingun = devastating to slower moving targets at medium range ( imps / big demons ) They never give you enough bullets for this thing and you hardly get to use it.
rocket launcher = massive damage at med/long range only (aim carefully .. sometimes its better to splash damage at their feet - at least you do damage instead of your rocket flying past its target alltogether)
plasma gun = great for large groups of monsters with its great power and large canister
chainsaw = very powerfull but is sometimes just more harm than good.
bfg = really slow. only good for rooms where you know exactly when to begin charging. If it wasn't a trademark of Doom I'd say replace it and the chainsaw with weapons that are actually usefull.

Started replaying Doom 3 without your sound pack, and yeah, it does sound pretty poor weapon wise. Very weak.

So now i'm tryin to get your pack, but it says i have to wait for 35 min! argh!

Were you able to host it anywhere else?

hmm...i'd like to try the sound pack but i don't use rapidshare.
is it possible to use putfile.com? or megaupload? something like that...

Well i eventually got it after the wait and

AMAZING!!

Brilliant improvement over the original sounds mate! Be proud of what you have acheived!

Gotta say, i never noticed the weapons much originally, but now, i am loving them!

Pistol is by far the best imo

Ok. Since I got some complaints about Rapidshare I uploaded it to MEGAUPLOAD

Version 1.75 - Fixes a few sounds that when played simulataneously, for instance two monsters teleporting (spawning) at the same time were too much bass causing distortion... and improves some of the monster sounds quite a bit over 1.7

The teleport sound when monsters spawn should be much better now, the burn up sound for some of the monsters has been improved, and a few random things.

also it removes the pause menu music. It was already disabled in version 1.7, becuase I didn't realize it holds this song in RAM. But the song was left in the folder wasting your HD space and download time (the song was 5 MB. )

So its back to the original pause menu music for now.

I removed that and a few dozen sounds that were disabled (test sounds that were in the folders but never play)

Got the file down to 15MB for quicker downloads and less wasted HD space for you guys.

I don't like megaupload - too much pop - ups.

im sorry. im open to suggestions for other places too. rapidshare seems the best to me but people don't like it for one reason or another.

anyway, don't feel bad, i get 40kb/sec download speed all the time - even with cable internet! DAMN FIREWALL! curse you! ;(

need someone to come to my house and help me configure this mess! :hmph:

I get better speeds with rapidshare.

I'm gonna try out the sound pack again and give ya some feedback. :)

EDIT - I like it for the most part. There are a few things that I'd like to see hammered out.

1. The shotgun "cocking" sound is a little weak. Kinda sounds like plastic and cheap metal. Needs to sound like it has more weight to it. That would make the shotgun even more badass!

2. The chaingun reloading sound is a little low. The original sound was pretty good as is.

3. The standard machine gun noise doesn't quite "fit" with the look of the gun. This seems like the most difficult sound to make for its design. I'm not even sure what it needs. Experiment with it.

4. I just can't get into those imp sounds though. :p

Other than that, you're on the right path!

1) Yes, the shotgun cocking sound is a place holder - actually i changed it as best i could before uploading it, it was worse. its more fitting of a conventional wood stock shotgun. I would have just left that sound out and use the one that comes with Doom3 but I like mine a little more.. maybe i can mix 3 of my best sounds and adjust the volume on each. you'd be suprized what you can come up with

2)I like the reloading sound for the chaingun but maybe ill play around with it some more. it took me a while to get that far. the original sound is not bad at all, maybe ill just mix the two or something or at least turn up the volume on it becuase i can hardly hear it in the original D3 sound set.

3) The machine gun sound is superb, but you are right it could use a more futuristic sound rather than some WWII mix of stuff i have in there now. It was 3db louder and it had so much punch it really rocked but it was just so much louder than the other weapons so i had to turn it down. The result is less punch. Its still a good sound but I think i have an idea ;)

4) Lol... I can give you an imp-free version when i finish everything else. .. Im starting to think i lowered the pitch too much i'm going to mess with that some more - maybe some where in-between would sound good.

Thanks for the suggestions, they help

I've got several hundred variations of each sound effect that I'm having trouble creating on my desktop. its a total mess. hundreds of shotgun cocking sounds, shotgun fire sounds, stuff like that. at least i finally have a great sounding shotgun fire sound. its pretty damn good if i say so myself

Edit: actually Satch you go in the folder and delete the imp folders - there is one in the sound/monster folder and one in the sound/ed folder - it would use the normal sounds instead.

Same for the shotgun cock sound which is in sound/weapons folder and are aptly named shotgun_cock_01 and shotgun_use_01

Right now im working on the plasma gun. its hard. RIght now i've got a sound effect from star wars in there, when you first power up a lightsaber. LOL I gotta say its pretty F'n cool, although, duh, its a little too familiar sounding ;) maybe i can modify it some becuase I like it too much to leave it alone right now. If only the plasma gun shot beams of light! sweet!

I guess then it would be more like a railgun, and i hate railguns becuase they are like a rocket launcher but don't have any splash damage and don't have all the explosive effects. Sort of hit or miss.

I've found that the pistol sound was not recorded too high so I am able to turn it down and the edges of the soundwave are not clipped off after all :D Also I have adjusted the levels of the plasma gun becuase it and the impact sounds from it were just a bit too loud also and became a distraction. I haven't done much else but i have been having a blast playing the game all day, finished like 5 levels with only a 10 minute break or two.

I always take notes of ideas and sounds that i want to work if i hear something while i play.

Stay tuned

This is something I'd definately be interested in, as I've gone through D3 about 3 times now.

However, like another poster said, I think you should get it just right before you release it.. Get a few beta testers who can help you get it just right... then have the big announcement and the release.. not vice versa.

I gotta get this thing, just need to hear a fixed shotgun. Damn that thing sounded like a Coke can being crushed.

Thats why its on rapidshare and megaupload instead of Filefront or something. People are enjoying it over the normal sounds, but i've got many more improvements planned.

Also, I upload it to backup my files. My brother downloads it, so if my hard drive were to crash, I won't have to start all over.

What else are you going to do? I have searched the internet and found a handful of sound mods that improve a few things but if you want something that improves many many things then my mod is the only mod in town, with several hundered sound changes.

And since i have actually taken the best of these available sound mods and put them into my sound mod - with credit given, there really is no better option.

I don't know if I'll ever be done - years from now i might be playing the game and decide i want to change something - But version 1.75 is really good, and is worth having.

If you haven't downloaded it by now then you might want to wait anyway becuase The bigger better version is just a day or two away.

I've got another 30 or so improvements so far in the backround noises and things since i uploaded 1.75.

I remember playing the game and boulders fall down they sounded like they were cardboard boxes.

I have made the sound like they should, and added particles and debris crumbling sounds to them all... lots of things like that

If you want the ultimate "finished" version, well you will have to wait a while, becuase this is some of the most tedious and time consuming work. If someone gave me the perfect sound effects I could drop them in the game in minutes since i know where they go, but, nobody gave me shit.

I have to do the best with the sounds i've got and finding a suitable replacement is hard. Finding a sound effect that is much better than the one already in a high quality video game is not easy. When I say finding, i mean finding a sound effect and cutting, pasting, modifying and mixing. I have to make my own sounds from the strangest sound effects many times. By the time im done modifying that sound, it doesn't even resemble the original sound effect it was.

EDIT: Well i had recently been messing around with the doom config and I have been using my own autoexec.cfg file and recently i had checked it out and I noticed it said"

Maximum sounds per shader "1"

!!!!
Thats why i was only hearing 1 sound (sound#1) for everything!! so a zombie could have 19 different sound effects for when he attacks you but it was always playing sound #1!!!

Ive fixed it! so now i am hearing all of the different explosions, deaths, pain, and gunshots, its really so much better.

I was like WTF i knew there had to be something wrong BUT when i re-installed it was doing the same thing. I couldn't remember clearly if it ever played multiple sounds or not.

i used my old config settings becuase they are set for max performance on my PC. i think when i was messing around with the sound mods i switched it from a "0" - which now i know means no limit to the amount of sounds, to a "1" which ment use only 1 sound per shader! Normally in these settings, 0 means no and 1 means yes. So i think one day i was like wtf is this set to no for and changed it to a 1, thinking i could just go back and switch it back if it messed something up. But apparently i didn't notice right away and therefore by the time i did notice, i had forgoten i had done it (i still don't remember doing it, but it sounds like something i would do) I know just enough to get me in trouble.

Anyway im so relieved. So if you downloaded any previous version and for example a weapon shooting sounded completely different each time you shot it, or there were enemies that had several types of dying and pain sounds (zombie soldiers)- it was becuase i only changed the first sound. Becuase on my game thats the only sound it played.

Anyway its fixed, so future releases will be much better!

Hu8zzzzzzah

EDIT 2:

ive got a new sound edit utility and its awesome. With the press of a button i can set the volume of a sound at its peak volume just on the threshold of distortion and clipping, without going over!

So no longer do i have to do this manualy, it will automaticly adjust things if i tell it to. for example dude said the pistol was too loud, and i loaded up that sound effect and sure enough it was clipping, (the meters would light up red at the end), well now its at the perfect volume. This is going to really make things easier and better sounding.

****YEH.

NEW Version 1.8 Twice the improvements as 1.75

new version 1.8
Dynamic Sound Overhaul

(sound only modification for Doom 3)

I've been working every minute on this mod -well, when im not playing.

This version is a huge upgrade!

It improves almost twice as many sounds as my last version 1.75

1.8 owns. It even includes 6 folders of monster sounds i did weeks ago but forgot to pack in, so they are in there now, making the uncompressed file 25MB.

It includes everything from previous versions(with the exception of a couple sounds i removed for one reason or another)

This version introduces Soundshader files SNDSHD and DEF defenitions!

This rewrites some of the Doom 3 code and MEANS that i could now include:[/
B]
-about 220 zombie sound effects instead of the normal 60

-more flesh_impact sounds

-about 40 different PAIN sound effects for the player instead of the normal 6. ****ing awesome

-9 pistol gunfire sounds instead of the normal 4. ****ing right.

-more shotgun dryfire (no ammo) sounds

Completely re-done:

-Revenant (skeleton. all sounds of bones rattling .. like is walking bones now)

-Vagary instead of screaming and crap he sounds scary. like RAWR

-Maggot instead of screaming and crap like a little bitch he now is alot more menacing sounding. pain sounds have quite a punch to them

-Maggot2 same thing

-Wraith (those really quick teleporting guys that strike like a mantis) Totally re-done sounds for everything except the walking. Also improved is their teleport and burn-up sound

-Zombie about 100 new sounds (all improved over original greatly)

-Zombie2 also about 100 new sounds (all improved)

-Fat_zombie new sounds

-Zombie_pistol (corrupt marines) new sounds and some old ones.

-Zombie_commando (guys near end of game with tentacle arm or chaingun)
re-done with wicked tentacle sound effects and commands you can hear over your voice communicator "kill.", really cool stuff like that.

-Hellknight touched up some sounds like if they kill you you can hear satan chanting

-cacodeamon (flying sphere pac-man monster) altered sounds and some "new" doom2 pain sounds

-zombie_chainsaw - increased the volume of his saw slightly

-zsecs couple new voice-com sounds but you may only hear this once per game anyway.

-pinky totally re-done. vicious melee strike sounds now

-pinky3 totally re-done

-Imp totally re-done

-Lost_soul totally redone

-Mancubus changed nearly every sound, cutting out parts that sucked and improving what was already there.

-new impact sounds for the plasma bolts and everything else.

-Boulders now fall with debris sound and sound more more like boulders instead of cardboard boxes.

-about a dozen or so improved ambient backround "melodies"

-some slightly improved sounds for a couple doors, elevators, and metal_clang sounds

-Couple altered voices for betruger

-some new alarm sounds (added an alarm sound for the automated turret gun warning announcement)

-DOZENS MORE

Think im about Finshed with the item pickup sounds. man do they sound crispy. It sounds great picking up a bunch of clips and shells off the shelf. only one left to do is the medkits

Remastered pause menu music to use half the memory and is back. faded out 45 seconds early to help <---edit with my headphones you could tell its quality was lowered and i may put a mid-quality copy of that song for next version. i did cut it down from 4.25 MB to 2.25MB

The pistol is finally perfected and is finished
some slight improvements to:
plasma gun
chaingun
machine gun
shotgun
grenades
bfg
chainsaw - i thought this was way too loud so i reduced it some.

Kill some demons and send them back to hell - just in time for Christmas.

This has been an unbelievable amount of work. The only reason I do all of this is becuase after putting a dozen new sounds in the game and go play it, its even more fun than before.

This game has the best gameplay of any first person game. im telling ya.

Anyway, im sure you will love it. Have fun. I can't stop playing. I'm about to beat the game on veteran again.

It's not finished by any means. The more progress I make, the more things I want to change. The problem is merely finding the perfect sounds.

But i'm sure you can't deny its WAAAAAYYY better than the original sounds.

The monsters sound different now and everything may seem a little unfamiliar but it just takes a few encounters to know if you hear a certain sound that means you need to get out a certain weapon. For example if you hear skeleton bones rattling you better get out your grenades or rocket launcher if you want to make a quick kill from a safe distance. No more of that bizzare chirping from the revenant.

I'm pretty much become an expert at modding Doom3's sound files, and know where nearly every sound is located or can at least get to the right set of folders to narrow my search down. I've also gotten pretty adept at the sound editing. Wait untill you see what's next! I don't want to spoil it..

EDIT: All monsters have been totally re-done with the exception of the cherub, the hellknight and the bosses, becuase I like the way they sound. I have plans to change the archvile's voices (path of flame summoner)

Also includes a better readme file.

please delete any previous version to avoid problems. Rememeber. the sound folder and the def folder were not originally there. so if you installed previous versions you can safely remove those and doom3 will be instantly reverted to the original sounds.

Due to the fact that many new sounds have increased low frequency - particularly gunfire and explosions, after starting your game, please go into the options - in the system menu and set the Doom 3 volume to 80-95% (id Software pre-set this volume to 80%) Setting it at 100% will cause break up in the sound during huge battles.

GRR! Where am my Doom 3 install disks? Stupid me, wiping my C drive without checking for install disks first...

I have mixed feeling about this sound pack (1.8). I'll list some things.

I absolutely hate the dying and wound sounds. I have deleted them all. They just sound irrating and distorted. It's just the wrong sounds. I think maybe you tried to do too much there.

I'm still not satified with the weapons sounds. Pistol is a bit too loud in comparison with the rest. Shotgun is better but still not quite right. The machine gun is also not right. Too low and too low pitched. The best machine sounds I have ever heard were from Half Life 1. You should try those sounds.

The rocket launcher I don't like. Not enough kick when first firing it. Was better in the original.

The imp sounds I don't like either. Too muffled and not as much personality as the original. When speaking of imp sounds I am figuring the imp is the skeletal character with the rocket launchers on both shoulders?

Anyway keep working on it, seems you are really spending a lot of time on this.

Why are you having such a hard time finding someplace to host this sound pack? I would think there are some sites that would do it like Planet Doom.

VirusType2 would you be interested in some help ? I've can modify the weapon skins and such if you'd like. Could also try to modify the weapon scripts to make them more powerful and what not :D

Is there some where I can check this out? I have several dedicated servers and would'nt mind providing a fast server to host you files. I don't have D3 but wouldn't mind hearing the sounds...Always looking to support fellow sound designers.

Progress Update

The last time I uploaded a version was new years eve. that was several months of non-stop work already, but It was pretty much a joke compared to how it is now.

I've been working on this mod around the clock for months.

I rarely work on the sound anymore, its complete but occasionally i come up with a new idea, There are new things I've introduced like dryfire animation and sounds for all the weapons.

Dryfire means pulling the trigger when there is no ammo loaded

I guess iD figured people would use auto-reload and only included dryfire for the shotgun.

Actually, id had the sounds for some like the plasmagun and BFG dyfire in there but never finished the weapon scripts and animation to include them. They are done now. And it's quite an improvement. its great.

I've included some new weapons like the double barrel shotgun and a couple surprizes. that early monsters drop them so you can get to the new stuff right away and have the entire game to use them. Everything is really balanced.

Hundreds of textures have already been re-done. You have to see it to believe it. Some levels are amazing to look at, and you might not even believe it or recognize it. Im not sure what Id was thinking about much of the textures being about 200% over-saturated - giving the game a cartoonish feel instead of realism.

Thanks to a bud named JC Denton, the weapons toggle like RoE. for example the shotgun shares the same button as the double barrel shotgun, so everytime you press it, it will switch to the other. This guy re-did some of the source code to allow for up to 32 weapons instead of 15 (and 2 of these could only be selected with the scroll wheel on your mouse or the "[" or "]" buttons. By editing the main menu to allow these guns to be selected by any button you wish, and weapon toggles, its much better. This guy didnt' stop here, and did some more things for fellow modders like RealTracers, which i included for all the projectile weapons and the monsters as well. the original tracers were pretty cool but ID had to drasticly lower weapon velocity to be able to see them, so the bullets would travel slower than they should. They also would fire off at off angles at times and slightly off-target

I've got an improved version of pakeens lazer sites for all the projectile weapons, with a different reticule for each weapon. pakeen created a craze when he made this mod, but his rocketlauncher reticule was actually off screen and could only be seen when you reloaded. Also the pistol lazer was quite a bit off target.

Ive got spectacular particle effects that are about 1 billion times better than the original ones. Bullets striking metal emits sparks and leaves teh metal hot for a split second and rapidly cools off, this is in effect for all the bullet weapons, and I've made it so the monsters weapons do the same. For example, shooting at the Zombie security gaurds that hold the shields is ****in sweet with the bullet damage in the shield apearing to have hot sparks flying off .

The graphical representation of explosions are now huge and many times better looking. I didn't actually change the blast radius - didn't need to.

I haven't changed the values of very many damage and health factors, to keep the gameplay how it was intended. You won't find 500 bullet clips and chainsaws that fire plasma and stuff in my mod. Don't make me laugh.

I've got some really dramatic stuff going on that must be seen. This has really shaped up as of late, but I have alot more tweaking and testing for all the explosion types.

the player bleeds and it looks realistic when you get shot blood flies out and splatters on the walls or whatever you are standing near. The blood effects are extremely realistic and i've worked very very hard to get the blood to fly out realisticly. The blood splatters now stay on the walls for long enough so in areas where you back-track through that room again they will still be there. (60-90 seconds) originally they stayed only a few seconds.

I've got a new HUD that looks bad as hell.. been working on the machinegun "GUI" (the ammo display) and it looks really clean and much better, still have some more ideas to do for this

All the weapons have new skins and look so perfect. You have to see it to believe it.

All of the monsters look really cool, Most just have subtle changes for the better. Some like the archvile, wriath, and revenant look really ****ing cool. The lost soul must be seen. (you will have to wait.) I really did this one cool.

I could go on forever and ever describing what I've done. This is a scratch on the surface of what I've done and what I will do and this describes some of the changes. There are a shit-load of surprizes that I don't want to spoil it.

2GB so far. thats huge for a mod that doesn't include any new levels.

The mod will be released first week of June with each part being in a seperate pk4 file and some will have 2 choices. I need more time to polish it up and include a few more things and make sure there are 'zero' bugs.

For example I'll include 2 files called
shotgunfire.pk4
shotgunfirealternate.pk4
so you have more than one choice for how the shotgun sounds without having to do any dirty work.

You just create a folder named
VirusType2 or whatever and put all the stuff you like in it, and press the mod button on main menu. you can also chose to have the mod always active by right clicking your Doom 3 icon and clicking properties
put
+set fs_game VirusType2
in the run line

it also has its own shortcut icon as well

Don't worry, you'll know when its done. You are going to be impressed.
You will feel like you are playing an entirely new game. DooM3 2006.6

In addition I'll be uploading some seperate little mods pretty soon here that of course work with this mod or without.

Sweeet. Unfortunately, at this point, I've pretty much given up on ever finding my Doom III install disks- I'm afraid I'm gonna have to pirate it or something :(
