DOOM 3: What We Know

I read Carmack's .plan file from '00, and it just makes me wonder how these companies tick.

"Kevin and Adrian fired Paul Steed in retaliation, over my opposition.

Paul has certainly done things in the past that could be grounds for
dismissal, but this was retaliatory for him being among the "conspirators"."

I mean, wtf?

that was a great summary! thnx.! good reading.....
will doom3 have any sort of physics system (if not they really should)

Yes, Doom III will incorporate a physcis system.

AWESOME!!!!! YES Im really looking forward to it...and no delays!! :D
is it havok physics or is it their own?

I believe it's their own physics system. I'm not absolutely sure about that, but I am quite sure that it is not Havok.

hunter ...i think he will.....is the Pm about doom3? lets bring it back on-topic
who else is going to get doom3

read it on a website when they had just released thier new box physics... it wouldn't have been a big deal if they bought them from Havok... but they made it themselves so it was a big deal

i'm gonna get doom 3... and it's gonna make me crap my pants! like the time i really had to go poo and i was playing resident evil and a zombie came out of the window and poo just flied every where... in my pants :/

nope they don't use thier own physics system or no the rag doll is actually good?

The Gamespy article had no new info and was in fact outdated by the recent article from Computer Gaming World.
But the screenshots caught my interest. At least 3 of those have I never seen before. The monster in the background of this screenshot looks rather intimidating.

Pauly! Fix that damn little stray pixel in your avatar! It's driving me crazy!

I didn't mean how'd you know they used their own physics. I meant how would you know the ragdoll effects were bad?

have you WATCHED the trailer? jeez, n3wbs gotta think b4 p0sting.... :hmph:

lol, j/k

i've hugged so many people in this thread... and Pauly... that pixel is driving me crazy, too

Ya, I watched the trailer. I know what you mean that some of the ragdoll effects in it seemed somewhat under par. But I thought the part where the invisible thing picked up the body and flung it around was done quite well. Plus you have to remember that the technology for that trailer is well over a year old now. It's possible they will improve and/or optimize things before the final release.

it's just the way the bodies react w/ other physical objects... horrible! doom 1 had better rag doll! :p

and i thought the t3ch would be more recent than that...? :borg:

the story seems intersting of doom3, i wont spoil it but you should read the latest articles on doom3...ALso there is alot more immersion than you think.

i am lookin forward to doom3 as much as hl2 now.

I think thats the monster that grabs the zombie by the head and throws him against the wall in the trailer. Not sure though I'll go check and see what I can get.

Edit: Yea it is I'll try to get some shots from the high res vid.

I got a couple screens here that seem a little interesting.
In screen 1 the monster is looking at the zombie.
Then, 1 frame later hes halfway through his back swing or throwing him! Wtf is this?
Also, about 1 second later when the body hits the wall, the abrrels jump and move before the zombie hits them. So much for per pixel hit detection.(maybe this doesnt apply here)

I could have got more but to keep you all from clicking a thousand times I only made nine pics that show what that monster does. Maybe someone could stick em together to make a really jumpy gif or whatever. This is for you guys who haven't seen the Doom 3 video yet too :)

Edit: Guess he grabbed him by the shoulder not the head. You must agree it would have been cooler if he grabbed the head.

Here are the pics listed in order:

It's just the way the trailer was edited together. The "pick up zombie" animation isn't shown, it skips from "look mean to zombie" to "throwing zombie".

Also, about 1 second later when the body hits the wall, the abrrels jump and move before the zombie hits them. So much for per pixel hit detection.(

Most likely has to do with demo playback problems with the physics system. Same thing happens in hl2 when you play back a demo, the physics looks a little quirky. Thats why there are some questionable sequences in the hl2 vids(planks breaking before the crowbar hits them and so on)

id's per-poly hit detection is top notch, so is their ragdolls. They are more realistic in that the movements of the limbs is more restrained. In hl2 legs and arms flail in rediculous ways, and when you kill a guy his body looks like a pretzel by the time it comes to a rest. Also in hl2 the bodies feel rediculously light. It's cool looking, but not realistic. Doom3 takes a more realistic approach.
