This trailer now makes me really want doom 3, It looks just incredible and has such a great atmosphere.
So great that we have two next gen games comming out, of which both have completly different environmental graphics. (doom 3 shiny)

It was fun 10 years ago, but now it's just tedious. Excuse my jadedness, but I expect more than repetition from my purchases. As it stands Doom 3 looks to be shaping up to be another sterling example of an ID tech demo, ala Quake. An impressive engine certainly, but I'm looking forward more to the work of the licencees rather than the licenser in all honesty.

Be careful, the 'fanboy' police will be on you in seconds. It seems like nobody can express any dislike towards Doom 3 on these forums without being labelled a fanboy. Honestly, I think the real competition is between HL2 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

That just doesn't make any sense. What is so tedious about a chainsaw? Why was it fine in the past but not now? Is a crowbar so much better as a default weapon? Chainsaw sounds a hell of a lot more fun to me.
Id software doesn't make tech demos. They are a game company that make games with bleeding edge, proprietary technology. They are a team of game developers, and their main source of incom is not from liscensing engines, but from the games they produce. Why some people say their games are tech demos is beyond me.
It most likely has to do with the fact that their technology is revolutionary with each generation, but the games tend to be on the simpler side. But this still doesn't mean the games are only tech demos. Id has just stuck to simpler games, with the focus on pure action rather than in-depth story. This isn't a bad thing at all, there wil lalways be a place for pure action games. Just look at the popularity of serious sam/painkiller type games.
But none this applies to Doom³ at all. Doom³ is a case of id slightly diverging from their fast paced, pure action games. In Doom³, id is shifting focus to the story and atmosphere. Doom³ is NOT the typical id game. There is a whole lot more to the game this time around.

Doom³, the story is 'Hell on Mars', the plot will consist of a couple of cut scenes and then wall to wall mayhem. The same plot used by ID since the original doom, all thats changed is the engine. There is no narrative to IDs work.

Agreed. Everyone is use to iD putting out another Quake Multiplayer game. When was the last singleplayer game they put out?
They have branched off from the norm and seem to be putting a lot of time and effort into producing this game.
I give them all the support they need and hope this becomes a great game.

This is just uninformed bullshit. Hell on Mars was the plot to the original Dooms, but there is so much more to Doom³. Narrative wasn't a focus to id's previous work, but it's clear to see its a major focus of Doom³. Why do you think they hired a professional writer to work on it?
Everything the developers have said about the game only points to the fact that they are actually developing a in-depth story this time around. All you have to do is read interviews. Anyone who read the January issue of CGW knows there is much more to Doom³.
Perhaps you could state your source for this information?
