IGN has just published a new preview of Valve's upcoming RPG re-master, Dota 2 ("Dota": Officially a word).

Most of the information, provided by Valve's Erik Johnson, has been said before in Game Informer's reveal article, so there's not too much of anything new to take away from. But, it's nice to see that Erik's enthusiastic about this project. Some highlights from IGN's article:

[br]

  • Core gameplay similar to that of the original DotA.
  • Creeps are in.
  • IceFrog is the man.
  • 3v3 or 5v5 matches. Map layouts are built around 5v5.
  • Art, infrastructure, and community features are a big focus.
  • Competitive community will get proper treatment.
  • Coaching system for new players.

Dota 2, for now, is scheduled to release at the end of this year.

I love that Valve makes all these wonderful games.
I just miss Gordon so much.

I wish valve would stop pissing around with this warcraft bullshit :flame:

Albeit this is a Valve game, the whole ugly nerd nature of the existing community for these style games puts me off completely.

I second that. But at least they're branching out a little. This is (I think) only their second non-FPS title after Alien Swarm.

Yeah. I also don't like that they're not giving this remotely the same treatment as Team Fortress.

Team Fortress: Grenade jumping and bunny hopping are exploits that everyone uses and have become core mechanics but alienate new players and reduce focus on what skills were intended to be important.
Team Fortress 2: Take them the hell out.

Defence of the Ancients: Animation cancelling is an exploit that everyone uses and has become a core mechanis but alienate new players and reduce focus on what skills were intended to be important.
Dota 2: Intentionally work it into the sequel.

I like the art, beyond that, I have no clue what any of it means.

I haven't heard this much moaning about Half-Life not being out since the year leading up to HL2's release. Seriously guys, Valve's other projects have nothing to do with Episode 3's progress... they are separate dev teams. Left 4 Dead and Alien Swarm and Dota 2 are all things that have happened alongside the development of the main Half-Life game. The reason that Episode 3 isn't out yet is because it isn't ready yet. You can theorize as to why - I personally think they've realized the episodic thing isn't realistic and are making it a full-length game, more like HL3 than Ep3 - but the fact of the matter is Valve have never disappointed, particularly not with the HL series. Let them take as long as they want, you know you're going to ****ing love it and lap it up along with everyone else whenever it does come out.

I have no particular love for Dota-style games but I am very intrigued to see what a fantasy world/game made by Valve entails. I also trust them to make it accessible to people like me who don't have the time or patience to sift through all the Dota history and culture in order to be able to play it properly.

It's in their nature to bitch and moan. It's the cycle of development of games on the consumer side. It is indicative of exactly how powerful the reaction on release will be and obviously with Valve and the HL series, you know it's going to be out of this world :)

He's simply expressing what we're all thinking.
I don't know about you but I don't sit around all day wondering when one particular game is going to be released. Valve have two games on the way this year it would be retarded for them to announce another one and take away the hype from the others. It would just be bad business sense.

Moaning is childish. Criticizing is a right. Criticizing =/= moaning.

I wasn't responding to legitimate criticism, I was responding to this, which is clearly moaning and not useful criticism and is representative of a growing trend throughout the forums lately to whine in inappropriate places about the lack of Episode 3 news:

Episode 3/HL3 - WHERE THE **** IS IT!!?????

Although if you want to get technical, criticism is not a right, because unfortunately here on HL2.net you don't actually have any rights :p I liked your post better before you edited it, 'twas less aggressive ;)

I didn't realise I was gonna spark a shitload of EP3 debate and a flamewar or I would'nt have said anything. You Peoples: Learn to take a joke

I edited my post ???!!!???

I think mods can see all edits done to posts. Including ninja edits like this one.

You don't call "I WANT EPISODE THREE INFO NAOW" moaning?

I wasn't referring to that particulat comment. Fact is, I feel that criticisms and discussions about EP3/HL3 are less and less tolerated. Hence, my advice to distinguish between childish moaning and legitimate criticism.
By the way, quoting blackout, we are talking about videogames, so we should really learn to take a joke :)

Jokes are supposed to be humorous. To be so they generally must also be original or somewhat fresh.

Actually, afaik only admins can. I just saw his post shortly after he posted and it changed when I returned to this thread :p

Admins can see your posts before you even write them. Yeah.

I tried really hard for a witty way to respond to that but I got noth-AAAAARRRRRRGGG GET OUT OF MY BRAAAAIN

Regardless of your attitude to any situation, I will call you Sheepy Sheepo regardless.
