Dragon Age Character creation tool to be released oct13th

Man, I've got to read those books. Sounds like godhax. You were right too; most of those spells were 9th level. I think disintegrate might be lower.

Do it. They are really enjoyable stories and quite funny as well (Cugel who is introduced in the second book is one of the great fantasy anti-heroes). Amazon stock the anthology. Basically there were 4 novels in the series:-

The Dying Earth

Eyes of the Overworld (featuring the Awesome Cugel)

Cugels Saga (Cugel returns!!)

Rialto the Marvellous

The Dying Earth was actually a collection of short stories all set within the same narrative universe, though there is cross over between the characters in them. Here is a link to one of the short stories Liane the Wayfarer:-

I recommend copying and pasting it into word as the formatting is a bit off on the website and it disturbs the reading.

Vance has a really nice flowing literary style to his writing, and I'm quite sure being a bit of a writer yourself Darkside that you'll appreciate it. you'll probably never forget the name Chun the unavoidable again either ;)

Chromatic Orb if caster level >= 12 should do the trick.
The thing with The Witcher is though that all though it used the forms it added a degree of depth to them because it explored the idea of racial unrest and distrust as a plot point. We weren't treated to the usual array of grumpy dwarves, flighty Elves etc, etc. Instead we were treated to characters some of whom had faith in us and others whom we had to convince and others ultimately we had to betray, regardless of their origin. What was even more refreshing was the fact that there was no external arbiter standing behind you assessing whether you'd been a good or naughty boy. How you felt about your actions was entirely up to you, which was quite refreshing Vs the Bioware/Lionhead approach.

Except according to what Bioware has said the setting and game is meant to be more like the Witcher and less like Forgotten Realms in that regard anyway.

Still need to be high level to wield it with decent effect though.

Not quite as fancy as Vances, The Spell of Forlorn Encystment which basically buries
the victim in a sphere 20 miles beneath the earth's crust for eternity or until released by the caster (oh and they don't die whilst they are in it) or The Excellent Prismatic Spray which basically fires hundreds of thousands of beams of colourful light through the victim turning them instantly to ash. Great stuff, though Gygax did steal the latters name literally (although not the might).

There was actually a Dying Earth p&p RPG out there: -

Though it seems like they have licensing issues.

My scepticism lies in the fact that the game was well into development before The Witcher was released, so any gestures towards it's approach are at best going to be token rather than profound. Secondly:-

Dire, just ****ing dire on every level I'm afraid. I mean I find Subject Zero for ME2 questionable, but its hard to contemplate that this is even from the same studio in terms of characterization, dialogue, the look and feel of the game and the quality of the animation.

Assuming the deviations from the standard fare are solely as a reaction to The Witcher, they've still had two years since its release. It may have been announced in '04 but they released several titles since them so the bulk of the work on DA:O has probably been much later than that.

Yeah that's pretty bad, but so were some of the NPCs in BG1 and BG2. Hardly enough to judge the game by.

Comparing Dragon Age to The Witcher is not fair, in my opinion. Witcher is an action-rpg (I personally hate its combat system), while Dragon Age should be more strategy-oriented, a la Baldur's Gate, KotOR, and so on.

awful vid

Terrible voice acting and animation, reminds me of those embarrassing old Painkiller cutscenes. or Freelancer. But hey, throw in some tits for the kiddies to fap over and it will sell millions.

Much as I want a good rpg to play, i'm not going to raid my piggy-bank for this one - Baldur's Gate has had its day.

looks good.

Are we watching the same video?

Unlike Pete 'build a world and then fill it' Molyneux. I think Bioware are much more story driven from the off, so for them to radically break from their tried and tested formula of player action = instant consequence 2 years into development would be a bit of a surprise imho. Sure they might do it, but I'd say the odds are slim and any alterations will be at best surface rather than core.

I'm not assessing them against BG 1 & 2 though. I'm assessing them against both their competitors & their own product. Compared to ME or even the aged VTM:B those lifeless animations look terrible.

The combat aspect has absolutely zero to do with my concerns. If you read them, then you'd realise this.

This.

Odds on the game opening with 'Start your Journey now, My Lord!!!' ;)

I am sensing a distinct lack of good will saves in this thread. Now, fort save or die.
