Dynamic-emotional Soundtrack in HL2?

Sound is often overlooked, also in the HL2 video's people talk about the great graphics but almost never of the equally good sound. Everything sounds right, best example: Tunnels video, the sound is just awesome there. It's one of the few games that has guns actually sounding like guns, especially the OICW sounds really like a gun should sound like.

Valve was always good with the sound. Half-Life 1 had the best sound that I have heard from any First Person Shooter. The Music was mysterious and fit the scenes that they were in. VERY Well Done!!!

Seconded I guess

I have a quick question that doesnt deserve a thread of its own can someone give me a quick yes or no answer to:

Did anyone actually find the easter egg in the HL2 vids we have all got sitting on our comps?

woah, forgot bout that!!! i bet a napkin that the easter egg is something with "April 2004 HL2 Released!!" written on it, so that gabe could tell us once we found it: "*insert nerdy laugh* pretty clever hein? *insert nerdy laugh"

I read somewhere a while back, that someone found a toilet in every video... yup.

There is a toilet... in every video!!!!

I'm being serious, doesn't that strike you as randomly odd? someone trying to be funny? hah.

Why would they do that?

(Someone had posted screen shots too, you can search for the thread your self) ^_^

I've always been convinced the easter egg were all the signs with 30 on them, September 30th.. it'll probably be why they refuse to tell anyone what it was now if it was that.

... and that would indicate that they truthfully believed that they could bring it out on the 30th...

yep, and I believe they really thought they would make it for the 30th. But like all things, the best laid plans etc.

anyhoo, back to the topic. Dynamic-Emotional Soundtracks, or Soundscapes.. Where and how do you think they'll be used, for what uses, apart from the obvious stuff already mentioned in the interview. How about things not thought of yet, since they could be pretty handy

Well, obviously their most popular use will be frightening people or making them tense up, but another use could also be to put the person playing the game at ease, to make them relax when in friendly surroundings.

I really REALLY wish that trent reznor would do the music for HL2.
I am envious, personally, i view trent reznor (from NIN) as being the musical genious of our time.

Doom III better have a soundtrack cd, =D

If anyone could make creepy and scary sounds for any environment, it would be trent, he is superior.

i don't wanna be a dick or anything but

err..

how do say this..?

Trent on Doom3 no longer working he is..

He may not be working there, but his music is still being used right?... which is where my envy comes in. I wish he did it for HL2 instead. =(

this is slipping again, one last chance before i drop kick it into the middle of general off-topic

If we can not speak of who's creating the Dynamic-emotional Soundtrack, then what do we talk about?

(overly strict?)

After all, the topic doesn't limit what can be discussed in regards to Dynamic-emotional Soundtrack. Tell me human, why must I silence my on-topic discussion without threat of drop kicking thread?

your talking about Trent Reznor and DoomIII.. big difference

Im talking about having Trent Reznor creating the Dynamic-emotional Soundtrack.

How he could do amazing ambient sounds. Which I clearly stated. Can I not wish for someone to have created the Dynamic-emotional Soundtrack?

lol - wow, you took ONE phrase in my post, and was like "dude, thats what your post was about, traitor!"

riiight.

Gabe Newell: Kelly has been developing the notion of soundscapes, which turn out to be pretty powerful. It's more in the direction of an AI foley artist than a synthesized score. I like what he's done a lot, as the effects seem to disappear in terms of your conscious awareness of sound, and instead you just get the emotional impact of them. That sounds
horrendously vague, so I'll try to give a concrete example. Let's say there's a hole in the ground. Let's say there's a basic set of 3D ambients playing (creaking, procedurally varying wind sounds). As you come up to the hole, there's an entity placed at the bottom of the hole, and when it can see you it fires and says "put the scary low rumbling tone into the mix" and it gets added in. Most of the time people won't be able to tell you "oh, that's when the sound showed up" but they will tell you that things got a lot scarier all of a sudden and they're not sure why. When they jump into a hole, there's a crescendo that gets added in that peaks as they hit the ground. There are blended transistions between ambient scapes, so as you move away from the scary things, the scary sounds become less prominent, and get replaced by more pastoral "let's go explore" sounds.

Lets talk about how a blue headcrab is diffrent from a red headcrab.

Theres many strange things in the Half-Life 2 movies. YES the Toilet one was pretty weird, but also Alyx's shirt in the Dr. Kleiner video. It featured the Lamba Logo along with the words Black Mesa. If none of those are the "Easter Egg" that Gabe spoke of then I wonder what the Easter Egg could be. I'm sure we will find out in April. As for Half-Life 2's music, I'm sure it will be as created as Half-Life 1's music.

My ignorance still says Trent Reznor could do better. =P

----------

Maybe there was more than on easter egg? Did gabe say there was only one?

About the sound, seen the bink video that shows off the dx9 graphics? When the player went from inside the building to outside of it in the beginning, you can hear the sounds changing from inside windy sounds to outside windy sounds, only poorly pulled off.
The sounds switched from low, to a lot louder way to fast. I could almost hear a slight thud from the sound clips switching. like that slight... "click" between sound loops.

Anyone else notice it?

I wonder if they even used the tech. in the bink videos. anyone know?

i bet not
they had script instead of ai in those binks
so i guess the e3 only had the whack-in-the-face kinda goodies and the more subtle ones would only have been noticed by hardcore, nitpicking freaks like ..
err like...
err like us..

I dont think the sound was scripted, why would you do that?

If what we saw, was the player being scripted, well, the game can still tell what that scripted person was looking at. its only extra work to script the sound.

I think the sound technology stuff was real in the bink videos. From the sounds of it, a couple of the videos werent as smooth as depicted by gabe in the interview.

"It's more in the direction of an AI foley artist than a synthesized score."

Did everybody know what a foley is? I didn't.

my point, exactly!

at least hl2 will be better than URU...

Why are they still developing sound, when the game was supposedly already finished 2 months ago. :dozey:
