LONDON, England (CNN) -- What should we do if an asteroid is on a collision course with Earth? This question is being taken increasingly seriously by scientists as more is learnt about the impact a near earth object (NEO) would have on the future of civilization.

It might sound like the plot of a Hollywood movie, but one gigantic asteroid is scheduled to come within 20,000 miles of Earth in the near future -- a near miss in cosmic measurements -- and the possibility remains that it could hit our planet and cause catastrophic devastation never seen before.

"Human expansion into our solar system is fundamentally about the survival of the species. Our species hasn't been around long enough to experience a cataclysmic extinction event. But they will occur again whether we are ready for them or not," NASA Administrator Michael Griffin told an audience at Langley Research Center.

The asteroid that has made the space community sit up and take notice is nicknamed Apophis, after the Egyptian god of destruction.

Over 300 meters in diameter and weighing 25 million tons, it is set to come within 20,000 miles of Earth in 2029. And that date for the near miss? April 13, 2029, which should get the doomsday soothsayers excited.

Well this can't be any good....

Not that i'm superstitious in any way but surely naming the asteroid after the egyptian god of destruction tempting fate?

300 meters versus roughly 12,000 kilometers....

I think our chances of survival are pretty good.

Edit: If it does hit earth, theres a good chance it'll land in water.

Yeah this has been discussed before, it seems every few months or so a new asteroid is discovered and each one is predicted to be the destroyer of good ole' planet Earth.

Ah well, here's to hoping we find a way to speed up Terra forming so we can populate Mars :D

I have to say it, If scalar electromagnetics really does work then asteriods are nothing to worry about atall.

I heard that 50 nukes could blow up the planet, yet it's said that we have over a 1000 in the USA alone, so how could we not just blow it up or atleast enough to alter its course?

Anyone taking bets on what country it will hit?

EDIT: If it will hit :O

it would be cheaper and easier to send an unmanned probe and change it's orbit!

and how exactly are you planning to send electromagnetic waves trough the nearly empty vacuum of space?

So is 25 million tons going to cause some damage? What are the survival rates?

Water or not, it will kill just as much by huge waves and that 25 million tons isn't just going to disappear.

Just dont go overboard! You might end up spending the last 22 years of human existence in a jail cell!

Nah, I'm white. When a white man is carrying a big TV and running he isn't looting, he's "Saving his last possessions." Didn't you learn anything from hurricane Katrina?

Maybe this will give an incentive for those Dukem Nukem: Forever devs to put out the game. Preferably before, you know, all organic life will be gone in 2029.

I can see the headlines;

"GIANT ASTEROID ABOUT TO HIT!"
"THE END IS NIGH!"
"DUKE NUKEM: FOREVER RELEASED"
"CLIFF RICHARD RELEASES NEW ALBUM, 'OH ASTEROID IN THE SKY ABOUT TO KILL US ALL'- CRITICS RATE IT AS MILDLY INTERESTING"
"ASTEROID WILL HIT THE EARTH AT 11 O' CLOCK"
"BIG BROTHER FINALE, TONIGHT AT 11:30"

Saw a video including this. Even if it misses, the next time it comes around it will hit us. When that is I don't remember, I think something around 2080.

Unless we destroy/divert it.

Yay, tidal wave!

I'm not sure if this is the same asteroid, but I thought we were going to die in 2030, now it's 1 year earlier, it must have taken a short-cut. Anyway, I heard we can divert such things with laser technology now which sounds fun. I'll forget about it for now though, someone remind me to be scared when it come around.

Yeah, but it was my understanding (good old Discovery Channel) that if it hits water, we get tidal waves etc. If it hits land, all this crud gets thrown into teh atmospheres which blocks out the sun which is bad news, and affects everyone, as opposed to just though who live close to water. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

"Call it fate, or what you want, you might try to fight the feeling but I know you can't!"

lol AJ :D

April 13th 2029 is also on a friday. Friday 13th ftw!

22 years away yet, I'd be 41 then :|

Weird thought huh? You'd be having to explain to your kids about this Asteroid. :p
