Yeah, but it was my understanding (good old Discovery Channel) that if it hits water, we get tidal waves etc. If it hits land, all this crud gets thrown into teh atmospheres which blocks out the sun which is bad news, and affects everyone, as opposed to just though who live close to water. Something so big (relatively) that is moving so extremely fast, in addition to its immense heat created by moving through the atmosphere, as well as the heat created by the impact.

The initial impact would basically hit the bottom of any ocean in the world, flash-boiling any water surrounding the impact, then cause massive tidal waves and plummeting tons of ash into the atmosphere.

When you talk about this sort of stuff, and bring into the possibility of it hitting water, don't think of the water being an obstacle the asteroid has to overcome or anything of the sort. Just think of it as it still hitting land, except you have tidal waves to contend with as a by-product.

Though I suppose it also depends on the size of the asteroid too, but the heat and blazing (o see what I did there) speed of the object should overcome any mass issues it has in regards to a water fight.
