Earth to be hit by asteroid in 2029?

Were Doomed! doomed! doooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooomed!

dooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooomed!

You get an S rank on Ready Steady Go on Cheer Squad mode and then you can tell me about butchering songs.
Note to self: Stay away from song butchering game.
I could care less about ranks from games that butcher good songs.

Yeah, but it was my understanding (good old Discovery Channel) that if it hits water, we get tidal waves etc. If it hits land, all this crud gets thrown into teh atmospheres which blocks out the sun which is bad news, and affects everyone, as opposed to just though who live close to water. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Yep, you're wrong, thanks though!

Something so big (relatively) that is moving so extremely fast, in addition to its immense heat created by moving through the atmosphere, as well as the heat created by the impact.

The initial impact would basically hit the bottom of any ocean in the world, flash-boiling any water surrounding the impact, then cause massive tidal waves and plummeting tons of ash into the atmosphere.

When you talk about this sort of stuff, and bring into the possibility of it hitting water, don't think of the water being an obstacle the asteroid has to overcome or anything of the sort. Just think of it as it still hitting land, except you have tidal waves to contend with as a by-product.

Though I suppose it also depends on the size of the asteroid too, but the heat and blazing (o see what I did there) speed of the object should overcome any mass issues it has in regards to a water fight.

Cool.

Part of me wants it to hit a really deep part of the ocean, so that the water boiling just outside of the flash-boil radius will kill some really cool deep-sea creatures, and they'll float to the surface, and then we can find them and marvel at their ugliness.

You know. Once we're done saving all the flooded countries.

Ill Shoop Da Whoop it out of the sky.

*begins charging mah lazer

No Urinel! You may cause a rift in time causing a MUTHA ****IN' TIME PARADOX ON THIS MUTHA' ****IN' FORUM!

EVERYBODY LOG IN!

I'M ABOUT TO OPEN SOME BROWSER WINDOWS!

And besides. Everyone knows asteroids are myths. Like Banana Ma- F*ck he's here!

:D

Maybe Gabbly can save us??

(i.e. gtf on gabbleh)

I'll be der later.

I have some Time to Split....

Hehehehe........F*ck you all. TimeSplitters FP is calling.

*Takes in a deep breath*

WHERE DA HOOD WHERE DA HOOD WHERE DA HOOD AT?!

Anyway this news has me a bit worried. We're currently defenseless against asteroids. We better start building something to deflect it or blast it out of the sky, even if the chances of it hitting us are only 1 in 45,000.

YAY! Death in the form of molten rocks from space.
Even if it does hit, a lot will be mutilated in the atmosphere (whats left of it). Although, many smaller rocks will rain down. :(

We can all dance and sing while rocks come raining down Or we can all move too antartica

Daigasso Band Brothers did that song much better IMHO...

plus that game is hella hard.

Nah it will just burn up in the atmosphere into a tiny rock and knock my neighbours house down

and how exactly are you planning to send electromagnetic waves trough the nearly empty vacuum of space?

What, you mean like visible light, X-rays, Cosmic rays, Gamma waves, radio waves? You know, the things on the electromagnetic spectrum?

Send out this guy.

Did you know that your chances of getting killed in a motorcycle are about 20,000 to 1? That the chances of getting killed by a motorcycle are about 15,000 to 1?

Compare with annual motorcycle deaths, and we can see that this is a big threat. I vote to gtfo of the planet now.

Yes but each motorcycle accident only has a potential of killing one or two people, whilst the asteroid could change life on earth as we know it.

That's why a 1 in 45,000 chance of asteroid is considered a serious risk.

Uh, Thats what I said/meant. :(

So what? 200 nuke missiles fired at it, problem solved...
Either that or go for the Armageddon movie option, drill into the asteroid and plant nukes in it, BOOM! Bye bye asteroid.

However the plan is strongly dependant on what the asteroid is made of.
So if for instance we are unlucky enough for it to be made out of solid metal, then the nuke missiles won't do much:(

oh well yeah...i didn't actually mean that. i meant these scalar EM waves.

which i haven't really got a broad idea of what they are.

but i have to admit that the ones you mentioned never came to my mind. it's just the wavelength that varies. thanks for reminding me. :(

Tsar Bomba will do the trick:

Those damn Soviets!

But yea, did anyone else notice that the date is on Friday the 13th?

That was something the OP's quote noted, but not sure anyone else picked up on.

Maybe someone from a far distant planet sent this rock our way to finally kill Jason for us.

If we can charge our lazars at the same time, we should be able to shoop da whoop it back to kingdom come.

I can see the headlines;

"GIANT ASTEROID ABOUT TO HIT!"
"THE END IS NIGH!"
"DUKE NUKEM: FOREVER RELEASED"
"CLIFF RICHARD RELEASES NEW ALBUM, 'OH ASTEROID IN THE SKY ABOUT TO KILL US ALL'- CRITICS RATE IT AS MILDLY INTERESTING"
"ASTEROID WILL HIT THE EARTH AT 11 O' CLOCK"
"BIG BROTHER FINALE, TONIGHT AT 11:30"
"MECHAGODZILLA REVEALS IDENTITY OF WEREWOLF"
"HALFLIFE2.NET LETTERBOX COMPETITION WINNER DECLARED, details page 4"

Did you know that there are lot more motorcycles than there are asteroids heading for Earth?

Yes, but there is a 1 in 15000 chance of being hit by a motorcycle.

However, there are more than 15000 motorcycles on earth.
So that number approaches 1.

In fact, you're almost certain to die in a motorcycle accident within the next 2 minutes!

IIRC for this particular asteroid to hit earth, it has to pass through a gravity well estimated to be 40 feet wide.*

40 feet

I think we'll be OK.

*If anyone is interested I'll try and dig up a link about it.

Yes but thank god, 90% of all statistics is bullshit.
