Hi, I use XSI and I am mediocre at modeling. I was wondering if it is gonna be possible to just use like the Alyx model and reskin it and change a few things, but keep the same bonestructure and use the premade animations for it? Thanks.

If you did that, you'd pretty much only be able to change the coloring. some of the clothing details are modeled into it, so if using Bagard's example, you'd end up with a naked chic thats into extreme body art with the whole objects placed under the skin type of thing :)

In other words changing the coloring and maybe very minor changes to the type of clothing is about as far as you can hope to get without modeling work.

It's easier to work from scratch than to edit completed models that animate and are rigged to the level of HL2 characters. Anything that can animate you want to be careful of modifying, depending on how the animations work, since they do use weight maps for the bone rig and its "possible" they use point order for morphs, you really are best not screwing with the mesh itself.

The reason I wanted to do that is just because I am horrible at rigging and animation, but I guess I will have to figure out something else.

Rigging you don't have to do nor do you have to do animation if you use the valve rigs. You would have to do weightmaps but overall painting weightmaps is probably the easiest part of that. in XSI you hit W select the bone whose influence you want to add and that's about it. Oh and you'd have to do the face poses to get that ability. But if you don't care about the face posing you can skip it, though it isn't the same thing as animating all you have to do is match the settings required.
