Former lawyer Jack Thompson says he intends to stop the release of EA's Medal of Honor and has sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates seeking his help.

Thompson, a notorious anti-videogame crusader who was disbarred in 2008 for his unrepentant, unrelenting litany of misconduct over the years, may no longer be a lawyer but he obviously still retains his hated for videogames and lust for the limelight. It's been awhile since we've heard from him but EA's upcoming Medal of Honor seems to have stirred him from his slumber.

Thompson faxed a letter to Robert Gates, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, in which he called upon Gates to take action to stop the release of the game. He criticized it on several points and accused Electronic Arts of disregarding the ESRB rating system by allowing anyone to preorder the game, regardless of age. He also told Gates that he would be justified in imposing a ban because the high level of realism makes it an effective training tool for the Taliban and other forces currently engaged with the U.S. military.

"With all respect for everything else on your plate, but as someone who has represented the surviving family members of such videogame-caused massacres, I personally urge you, as Secretary of Defense, to do what is necessary, proper, and legal to stop the release of Medal of Honor on October 12 on the basis that it poses a demonstrable danger to our troops by providing a training tool for those who wish to kill them," Thompson wrote. "I would also strongly suggest that the Defense Department find out who these Special Ops people are who have acted so foolishly in this regard [by consulting on the game]."

"Finally, I believe the full weight of the federal government should come down upon Electronic Arts and the videogame industry's Entertainment Software Association for their allowing, presently and fraudulently, despite promises to Congress, the widespread pre-sale of this adult game to minors throughout the country and around the world," he concluded.

Thompson acknowledged to PCMag.com that he's not representing anyone as a lawyer, because he's not a lawyer anymore. "I am speaking on behalf of a number of people who believe that EA should not be selling such a game to minors, particularly one that allows one to play the role of the Taliban," he said. "Beyond that, I am not presently authorized to identify anyone. That may change in a day or two. I intend to stop the release of the game."

Gates has not yet responded to Thompson's letter, but his counterparts in the U.K. and New Zealand have expressed strong disapproval of the game, with U.K. Secretary of Defense Liam Fox asking retailers to voluntarily "ban this tasteless product." The likelihood of any kind of ban against Medal of Honor in the U.S., however, or even of Gates acknowledging Jack's existence look pretty slim at this point.

Medal of Honor comes out on October 12 for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

That son of a bitch.

Edit:

Bastard lives off the limelight, like a leech to blood.

lol, what a jackass.

on the flipside, why is he not pointing out that playing as US forces against taliban forces can be used as a training tool in a similar vein? in fact, games like americas army are marketed and used as military promotional means in such a way to sway gamers into joining the army. if he's going to try and make a point out of that, at least recognize that anyone bearing arms against the US, even if they have been drilled into peoples heads as being ''the enemy'', are still people and this ''tool'' works the same way against them.

the old classic speech isnt even modified....

Wait, Medal of Honor is a high level of training that the Taliban could use???

WHAT

Let them train off this game, makes them easier to kill.

Can't this madman Thompson asshole stop trying to feel like a good guy and show off in front of the press?

I guess it's because it's not ok, for him, for anyone to play as a Taliban. But it's perfectly fine to play as U.S. forces. This is what his 'outrage' feels like to me, he's trying to overblow something as evil and harmful for young gamers to show everyone on tv and in the press that he's doing good, his ego feeds on people cheering for him. Nobody made a big deal about playing on the Axis side in WW2 games, and noone made a big deal about playing on the insurgent side in the Modern Warfare games (or many Modern Warfare games outside of Call of Duty). Hell, noone accused Gordon Freeman of being a terrorist when he killed U.S. Marines in Half-Life (though it was really self defense)? These self proclaimed Moral Defenders are real ridiculous by going after these silly little trivial things that really hurt noone. You can do alot more good by helping your community, and if Jack Thompson really wants fuel his ego by having people cheer him on why doesn't he do something constructive and useful for his community? Why can't he donate? Or Volunteer? He can do so much more good rather than go after a silly little medium that will not hurt anyone?

Oh, no, the bad guys wear white and black with scarves in this game!

Instead of Red or Blue.

How tasteless.

He [...] accused Electronic Arts of [...] allowing anyone to preorder the game, regardless of age.

Really all that needs to be said.

I still don't get how he can blame EA for that, when its retailers who sell their game, and EA's site has you say your age and requires a credit card (which, as far as I know, you need to be 18 to get.)

They need to put that orange plastic on the tips of guns so people know this game isn't real.

How about an Orange cork in Thompson's mouth so he can shut up once and for all?

Or at least so that everyone will know the stuff coming out his mouth isn't real.

Heh, that was pretty good.

Jack Thompson is nothing but a troll.

Do no feed the troll!

Really all that needs to be said.
Yeah, see this is actually a legitimate complaint. If EA are circumventing ratings standards to sell extra copies to minors (and that's if), then they should be called out on it. Which would be fine if Thompson didn't have it own retarded agenda for this all to get bogged down in.

I mean, christ, does the guy actually believe any of this is going to stick?

Or at least so that everyone will know the stuff coming out his mouth isn't real.

Oh absolutely, I was just pointing out that it's an example of Jack being swept up in his own inability to reason.

Quite, old bean, didn't mean to imply I was in disagreement with you.

Mmm. Yes. Indubitably.

And so forth.

Muhammad I've been shot!
It is ok, we have trained for this day, just sit down behind that rock for ten seconds and you will be healed.
I will show these American infidels my leet skills!

No-one ever told me what Thompson's issue was. One can only assume his kid was raped by a game or something.

I'm confused by this thread title. are you asking us to eat a dick in celebration of jack Thompson's return?

Druckles: Jack thompson has made a career of being the "wont someone please think of the children" self annointed spokesperson:

Thompson came to national prominence in the controversy over [rap group] 2 Live Crew's As Nasty As They Wanna Be album.

On January 1, 1990, he wrote to Martinez and Reno asking them to investigate whether the album violated Florida obscenity laws. Although the state prosecutor declined to proceed with an investigation, Thompson pushed local officials in various parts of the state to block sales of the album, along with N.W.A’s Straight Outta Compton.[21] In sending documents to opponents, Thompson would frequently attach a photocopy of his driver's license, with a photo of Batman pasted over his own. Thompson said, "I have sent my opponents pictures of Batman to remind them I'm playing the role of Batman. Just like Bruce Wayne helped the police in the movie, I have had to assist the sheriff of Broward County." He also wore a Batman wristwatch.[22] Thompson compared Campbell to the Joker.[23] Thompson also said, "I understand as well as anybody that the First Amendment is a cornerstone of a free society—but there is a responsibility to people who can be harmed by words and thoughts"

BREAKING NEWS:

EA, Electronic Arts

In response to a recent letter by Jack Thompson, we have currently decided to postpone the release of Medal of Honor upon further review by our staff and in conjunction with the United States Department of State and the United States military.

Due to heightened criticism on the basis of being able to play as the Taliban and kill U.S. or NATO forces, the game is currently suspended and awaiting further review.

All customers will receive full reimbursement for their purchase(s).

good job EA, bend over and lube up why don't you

Whenever I see "Eat a dick" I think of The Boondocks and Thugnificent. So that makes me happy.

No one cares about Tack Jhompson anymore anyways. He's like the guys from the 90s that spawned the v-chip that absolutely no one uses and apparently thinks it's the government's job to maintain responsible parenting. The funny thing is no matter how much faux outrage he generates, he's never going to accomplish much here. There's no conclusive evidence that video games make people more violent. Violence existed well before video games and by all accounts will continue until we're all in a constant sedative state.

Jack thompson has made a career of being the "wont someone please think of the children" self annointed spokesperson:

That doesn't explain why he does it. Bruce Wayne was torn up over his parents' brutal murder. Hence going on a personal crusade.

Also, how could he possibly have seen or read Batman in his entire life and used him as an icon? Surely he knows it's full of violence, crime and danger? Worst of all, half of it is targeted at kids!

That doesn't explain why he does it.

sure it does. he's a far right conservative evangelical christian. he's "protecting the innocence of children". he's also a sensationalist ego-maniac who likes the attention

Druckles said:

he hasnt. that quote was from 1990, a few months after the release of the tim burton batman movie:

Just like Bruce Wayne helped the police in the movie

it's typical Jack Thompson: capitalize on popular trends to appeal to a wider audience. but you can see it was his idea, a PR firm wouldnt have been so amatuerish

Alternatively, he lives in a terrifying dreamland where he thinks he's Batman. I'm holding out for that being a bonus mode in Arkham City.

BREAKING NEWS:

EA shouldn't have given in like that, noone cares nor listens to him anymore. Then again, I'm wondering if maybe he secretly threatened to take this up with the shareholders?

Despite his threats, there's nothing the law can do about this. I'm not exactly crazy about the theme of the game, but it is their right to develop and release this game, it's protected under the constitution. This is something Jackie boy fails to understand, the law can't block the release since it would be breaking the constitution.

Source on that EA announcement? Can't find it anywhere else.

because he made it up? come on man the grammar in that breakin news thing is worse than mine. if that's an example of EA's public relations guy EA needs to fire their entire workforce

Also, the irony is your post is tremendous. But I'm unable to tell if that was on purpose or not.

Hey man, this is the games industry, I make no assumptions about intelligence.

Just glad I don't have to eat my own words because of Jack ****ing Thompson.

Surely to ban a game where you can shoot US marines as the Taliban is biased? I'm surprised it's even considered in today's politically correct world.

I thought Thompson had some kind of restraining order preventing him from shitting within five miles of electricity?

He also told Gates that he would be justified in imposing a ban because the high level of realism makes it an effective training tool for the Taliban and other forces currently engaged with the U.S. military.
Jack Thompson doesn't know anything about realism until he's played Operation Flashpoint, the bloody casual.

“GameStop has agreed out of respect for our past and present men and women in uniform we will not carry Medal of Honor in any of our AAFES based stores.

“As such, GameStop agreed to have all marketing material pulled by noon today and to stop taking reservations. Customers who enter our AAFES stores and wish to reserve Medal of Honor can and should be directed to the nearest GameStop location off base.”
