I deleted my old char on oblivion as it was my first time thorugh i had made loads of mistakes and wanted a fresh start .. so i did ... now whenever i go to load my new game it just quits ... i tried rebooting, didn't work, so i went to reinstall, i go to remove it and get this error:

I then click OK and get this:

Setup has experienced an error

Please do the following:

-Close any running programs
-Empty your temporary folder
-Check your Internet Connection (Internet based setups)

Then try to run the Setup again

Error Code - 5001


I then click OK and "Add or Remove Programs" just freezes up and i have to close it.

Please help guys ;(

Strange, you could just do an install over the top of the old one (no uninstall). Seeing as that will only overwrite old settings it should work fine.

Oh have you tried deleting the oblivion.ini under my games/oblivion/ and launching the game again? Sets everything to default as found in the default_oblivion.ini in the game directory.

To delete your temporary folder, press the Start button on windows XP, select Run... and type temp in the run box and press enter. This will open your temp folder. Delete everything in there. You can't hurt anything by doing so - as far as I've been told.

I seem to recall reading that if you have any problems re-installing the game, simply run the setup.exe instead of the launcher. I think it is written in the README.txt that comes with the game.

I tried deleting the files in the temp but only a couple could be deleted as they were being used by other programs and there were so many to just sit and there and check em all lol. I also tried deleting the '.ini' but it just crashed with the typical XP error, so i just did an install to overwrite the previous files, hope this works

That means you need to be in safe mode to delete the temp files if it says they are 'in use' - assuming you weren't running any programs in the background.

Don't forget, at this hour, you could email a detailed explanation of your problem (including error codes if you are getting them) and get a response from Microsoft very quickly (an hour?) and they can tell you all the things I've told you and more, and they will have your shit working minutes after you get a response. (they do this all day every day - it's their job) It would be a perfect list of things you need to do to fix it in easy to understand and follow instructions. (they read error codes and know exactly what they mean)
