Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

I kind of want to get this, but I have a feeling the ridiculous UI would just piss me off. Any mods for that yet?

oh ffs. the UI is fine. gamers are the pickiest bastards ever. In my day we had UIs made out of sticks

No, it's not a little bit. Nearly 30 hours in I can't access the most basic things. You also neglect the fact of how unbalanced things like shield, one-handed sword, and destruction are, because they are almost impossible to level up reasonably (they always need a target). As you know, the game works so that whatever you use the most is what will naturally level up, so things like conjuration, restoration, alteration, and smithing are super easy to level up because you don't need a target. If you are leveling a skill that needs a target to register, it is extremely slow and difficult.
This is how the game is unbalanced, the player might want to use a certain weapon type or spelltype, but can't simply because it is low level and too weak to realistically survive in combat, so that thing that you WANT never gets used, and therefor never leveled.

Just because it was how the game was "meant to be played" doesn't make it good or balanced.
But I'm a one-handed mace user and completed the main quest no problem. And blocking can be levelled easily by standing there with a shield while one enemy hits you.

Just use wasderTAB for all of your menu options, including dialog.
But that ****s up the dialog for me. Sometimes I have to use the mouse to fix it, or scroll up/down all the way with WS to fix the selection

I just hope they release the source of their Flash GUI files so modders can change them properly. Check these out:

I've noticed the weird problems that arise from using WASD/E/Tab to navigate menus/dialogue and also having the mouse hovered over something... just draws even more attention to the fact that they clearly didn't give the PC UI any real thought besides changing the button config from gamepad to keyboard. It doesn't seem to happen much if you leave the mouse idle prior to engaging in conversation or opening your inventory screen though.

Is all of the interface done in Scaleform? If so I bet we can expect a whole universe of UI mods very quickly once they release the mod tools.

Played a fair bit, explored my first Dwemer ruin under M-- ah, crap, the Nord city built from a ruined Dwemer one. I absolutely, positively love Dwemer stuff, so presently I'm running around with a bow, set of armour (sans helmet), sword and shield made from Dwemer alloys. It's quite awesome.

Inside said ruin. Accompanied by that Nord slave you get from the Jarl of Whiterun.

Hunting on the plains outside Whiterun. The mechanics are almost as awesome as the ones in Two Worlds.

I have a bunch of Dwarven armor, used it for a while but steel plate has a higher armor rating.

I have also done one Dwemer dungeon so far, Avanchzel. It was pretty neat. I love how they basically made the Dwemer an excuse to put steampunk stuff in the game.

BTW for all you PC users, there are a lot of INI tweaks that make the game better. I'm sure many of you have already seen/done these but just in case, here are the ones I use. To change all this stuff, go to your SkyrimPrefs.ini file in the /skyrim subfolder of your install directory and open it in Notepad. The

Performance-related tweaks
- Disable mouse acceleration - under the [Controls] section, change bMouseAcceleration=1 to bMouseAcceleration=0
- Disable vertical sync - add a new line at the bottom of the [Display] section that says iPresetInterval=0 (vertical sync is another word for running with a locked / non-variable framerate, so disabling this can improve performance and reduce mouse lag)

Graphics tweaks
- Change field of view - under the [General] section add a new line saying fdefaultfov=90 (or whatever you want your new FOV to be)
- bTreesReceiveShadows=0 and bDrawLandShadows=0 should both be changed to 1 if you want to have the best graphics (for those of you running on max settings)... this enables self-shadowing on terrain and trees and is a HUGE visual improvement (and cannot be done via the provided video config tool)

I strongly recommend doing all of these. The mouse is still a bit sluggish but nowhere near as infuriating as it was before I disabled mouse accel and vsync.

Also, Ennui, you are surely referring to the My Docyments/My Games Skyrim folder, right?

And what ZT said.

The FXAA injector can be used to add any sort of filters to the graphics as well.

Check out skyrim nexus for mods. There's actually some quality ones already out, like improved faces/bodies/eyes. Plus a few texture packs that look somewhat interesting.

I would love to have food/hunger mod as well as a body temperature mod. Having to stay warm in the frigid cold would be great if done right.

^Indeed.

Okay, so your shouts automatically upgrade each time you kill a dragon? You don't have to manually upgrade them? And you hold down your shout button to make the shout stronger? I've been trying this with the first shout I got and it seems to be exactly the same.

Each shout has 3 words. Each time you find a wall (dragons hang around walls) it will either give you a word to upgrade a shout you have, or it will give you a new shout you didn't have before (in this case you need a dragon soul to unlock it). You only need to hold down the shout button to make your shout stronger if you have 2 or 3 words.

Whoops, yeah. My Docs/My Games/Skyrim is the right folder, not what I said. As for what ZT said, the steampunk aesthetic had already been around for well over a decade by the time Morrowind was released. I didn't mean to make it sound like I thought it was a recent addition, more just an interesting aspect of the universe to someone like me who didn't play Morrowind or much of Oblivion.

Playing an open world RPG like this has made me very nostalgic for the Might and Magic games from the 90s... especially MM6 and MM7.

Loved Might and Magic. Kids these days, even kids my age don't even know what the **** Might and Magic is. All they know about is Heroes of Might and Magic.

EDIT: I guess I wouldn't be considered a kid anymore eh? Haha. I guess I still feel like I'm a kid though... in a way.

yeah but this is like going to all your doctors/specialists and getting your health fully checked up, only your optometrist replaces your glasses with a hunk of quartz

Heroes of Might and Magic is great. I played HOMM when it first came out, I couldn't have been more than 7 or so. HOMM3 was always my favorite. That being said I liked the original Might and Magic games even more... I still think fondly of MM6 from time to time. Games have come a long damn way in 15 years. This is what MM6 looked like:

Come to think of it though, the MM6 inventory screen was a lot more useful and efficient than Skyrims... so was doing stuff like making potions, etc.

as well as a body temperature mod. Having to stay warm in the frigid cold would be great if done right.

On second thought, this is probably a bad idea. It would probably be awkward and annoying. The only way I can imagine it working is if there was "blizzard clothing" you had to put on during blizzards or more mountainous areas to slow down the freezing cold.

but even then changing clothes ever time you went out would just become tedious.

So I finally beat the main quest (I did alot of quests before I finished it, I'm level 29 now), and it was actually pretty awesome. Did not disappoint!

Alduins death animation/scene was wicked, and the afterlife in the last quest was sweet, look at the skies there! I did not kill Parthurnax, because he is awesome, and eventually the mission just goes away (the "kill Parthurnax" mission) when you finish the main quest without killing him - so if any of you don't want to kill him just don't. You get scolded by the Blades, but **** them. Parthurnax is cooler then they'll ever be.

So after hours of aggravation I find out that "R" let's the tension off the bow so I don't have to fire a shot. Now I feel silly

How long is the main quest do you think? I want to pace myself enough for a second playthrough later this winter.

Thinking of sticking mostly to the main quest as my warrior now. Later going as a thief and doing tons of side stuff. Leaving thief guild and dark brotherhood for a thief playthrough.

It's pretty short. I wasn't even rushing through it, I thought I still had lots of quests left but then I got to a certain point where I realized I'm done in another 2 quests so I just finished. What mission are you on?

I was planning on making a mage character next, but I gotta finish the companions missions with my warrior first :p

I like to think of there being no 'main quest', just one really character based quest among hundreds.

Horses that get killed by dragons. New Armor. Saving up for a 5000 dollar house even though I saved the whole ****ing town.

I want to say this in the nicest way possible, but... you sound pretty bad at this game. I have no idea how someone could have played for that long without even saving 5k for Breezehome. That's like two dungeons worth of half-decent loot, presuming you're hauling out all you can carry. Exactly how often are your horses dying? D:

It's still a badly designed, crappy user interface. The fact that you're getting used to navigating it doesn't mean it's not badly designed and ill-conceived.

Agreed. I'm actually finding the opposite - the more I play, the more I hate it. Design concerns aside, the thing is so ****ing glitchy that it's a pain to use at the best of times. The way switching between keyboard and mouse control makes things non-selectable half the time, the way even when you switch to WASD to avoid the aggravating mouse control it still occasionally shifts an entry up when you use or sell an item, the way clicking just outside of an option will exit the ****ing menu. And christ, the dialog. Even after switching to just using WASD and E to select stuff, I still get it highlighting a higher option sometimes and not centering on it correctly, so now I have to pay attention to the barely noticeable text highlighting to see where I'm at. And then on top of that it's also terribly designed and, in a game where item management takes up a decent chunk of your time, it makes it as unintuitive as possible by dumping everything in ****ing single-file lists with zero sorting options. It's objectively terrible and the source of most of my frustration with the game.

Good thing it's worth it.

Edit: Oh, I nearly forgot my favourite one of all - putting "store" and "loot all" on the same ****ing key. Makes managing your house storage a real joy. :)

If you're low on cash, go crack some Dwemer ruins. Markath (yes! FINALLY RECALLED THE NAME) is a good place to gather scrap (struts, metal pieces, bent sheets) and miscellanous Dwemer items (bowls, cups, plates etc.). Make sure you have the Dwarven smith perk (requires 30 smithing).

Then make sure you have a bit over 500 septims in your inventory and buy all the iron ore and iron ingots you can. Go smelt the iron ore and Dwemer scrap into ingots. You should ideally have three Dwemer ingots for each iron one. Now grab the hammer and start smithing Dwemer bows. That's right, bows. They require the least amount of materials and have a high selling price. Each needs one unit of iron and two units of Dwemer alloy.

That should leave you with several Dwemer bows and, ideally, one Dwemer ingot per each bow. Assuming you had a lot of iron ingots, you should have levelled up your smithing skill several times. If it was high to begin with, then you're in for making a load of cash. Go to the grindstone and improve every single bow. Then find the nearest merchant with cash and sell them en masse. Luckily, Skyrim doesn't have much of a free market, so flooding it with Dwemer weapons won't lower their value.

All miscellanous Dwemer artifacts can be sold for a few hundred septims more. I usually choose Khajiit caravans out of racial solidarity. To summarize: if you invested into iron, you should have a net return of about 200 hundred septims per iron ingot. I managed to sell a crate of thirty Dwemer bows, giving me a net income of about 2500 septims. And I took less than a tenth of the scrap and junk from the Dwemer ruins under Marcath.

Again, I'm playing as a Khajiit archaeologist-rogue (think feline Indiana Jones), who's obsessed about the Dwemer.

And what Bad Hat said.

I make far more cash from just doing randomly generated dungeoneering missions than going to that Dwemer ruin, but then again I am at such a high level (41 now) that almost all the enemies I meet have at least a few ebony or daedric weapons.

Dwemer weapons are quite low on the value scale when compared to Daedric and Ebony (Which every bandit and his mother now seems to have for me when I do dungeon romps.)

It's ironic, my main problem with making money now is that I have to travel to several different cities to be able to sell all the expensive weaponry I manage to find on your common bandit.

And I do not particularly much feel like wasting perks on Speech tree.

^^If you have have a hard time making money, just finish the DB quests (you get like 20k for that), and then keep doing the randomly generated ones.

But yeah, it's been fairly easy to generate funds based off dungeon stuff. Except recently, I've been neglecting selling anything in my borderline full inventory and just running around and completing quests.

As a sidenote, I love the night time atmosphere in this game.

I haven't had money issues at all myself (I'm level 24 or so). Bought Breezehome with my first 5k and I've only had to replace my horse once.. the first one I got for free from that quest, his name was Frost and he perished at the summit of a mountain near Solitude in valiant battle with the fifth dragon I slayed. My house is also completely full of expensive weapons, armor, and staffs that I'm too lazy to bother selling.

I just beat Valthume. Avoid that place like the plague until you're OP as ****. I barely beat it after 4 hours of saving and reloading, nearly lost Lydia, even after I gave her my handcrafted dwarven armor set, and spent a good ten minutes running around the word wall room spamming heal spells while avoiding the baddies.

I probably do suck to some degree, but I think it has more so to do with my play style. I am a melee based battlemage with light armor playing on Expert. Therefor I have a strong focus in stamina and magic rather than health, which means getting my ass kicked a ton, and also not being able to carry a whole lot. So I've been spending a lot of time picking up shit and selling it to improve my light armor and weapons.

I know that build doesn't make a ton of sense, but my idea was to deal a lot of fast damage while protecting myself primarily with my shield abilities. I don't have much invested in light armor so I might go heavy.

(Which every bandit and his mother now seems to have for me when I do dungeon romps.)

What level are you? I'm level 29 and I really don't find much ebony at all. Still haven't found 1 Daedric item either. I find Glass weapons but only like 3 pieces of armor so far (2 boots and gloves), which is wierd because I found an ebony helmet and armor and boots and gloves :/

Also am I the only one who hates companions? I tried Lydia and she did **** all for me, I'm faster and can kill enemies way easier without her getting in the way. All companions really, I hated doing the stormcloak missions (I finished their questline) because most of it is huge battles with tons of guys, and I ALWAYS end up killing atleast 3 because they get in my effin way.

Watch out for trolls with firedicks. They're not afraid to flaunt them.

Heh. My witch up until I just got some forlorn armor was simply wearing robes(and probably will still be until I can get the armor to have the same mana regen as the robes). I'm also playing on Expert. I guess that's why it's so hard for me. But god damn is it rewarding.

Hey sexy mama... wanna kill all humans?

Things I noticed today: Labarynthia is an awesome looking place, and Thalmor Robes are badass.
