Is it me or is engine updates progressing a bit fast? When the beta started it was source engine v8, now it's v10?

They are probably trying to push the engine updates out that they've done for Ep2 and such.

Yeah, loads of intense updates. Good to see they're getting it all ready to go :)

So they start off with a non-ep2 engine or what? Cause it doesn't seems like something you would up a major revision for.

Could be just adding em little at a time so everything doesn't break, possibly.

I believe TF2 was just as up to date as Episode 2 when it was released, but the new version of the engine, which has undergone quite a few under the hood changes was destined to hit some bumps and compatability issues when it hit the public, so they are most likely trying to get as many of those problems fixed before the orange box goes live proper, and thus ease the usual pain of "OMFG MY SOUND IS TEH SUXOR" posts that always appear.

This seems likely.

The TF2 beta might also serve the purpose of allowing them to test new engine features serially so they can fix problems before Orange Box hits.

Is it just me, or does it run a lot better than it used to? I was getting marginal framerates at 1920x1200, but now it's smooth as butter. Well, almost.

It feels the complete opposite for me.

Uses up much more ressources than a week ago

I don't notice much hit in my frames since the latest patch with the textures....even when I upped it up to max. So I don't know.
