Episode 2 CGI ?

Did anyone notice on the trailer for Episode 2 that a lot of it appeared to be CGI. Which Valve have NEVER done before (I'm not talking just game wise, I think that was the first piece of CGI material I've EVER seen Valve produce).
I could be horribly wrong, but it just seemed like it too me.
 
What are you trying to explain here? Only form of cgi I know is a script for websites. Like Perl and Java.
 
I dont think it is. The only possible bits that could be cgi are the bits including the mini-striders, and the mini-striders are already modelled and sort-of-in-game-ish.
 
what are you talking about? of course they were ingame! through careful analysis of the video its clear to see them running over real hl2 terrain, they're rather polygonal and the glows are purely hl2 HDR. The only thing that makes them look like CGI is the camera work. In fact the only thing I saw that wasn't "in-game" per-se was the (quite terrible) 2D skybox, which I am sure is only temporary
 
Nah I do believe there was ONE little bit of CG in that final trailer and it was the panning shot of what remained of City17 everything else was ingame though and I can forgive that little bit of CG as it worked so well
 
Do not underestimate the power of the Source engine, is all I have to say.
 
lol im not. watch the shot and observe the background it isnt ingame.

Then I guess you never seen a 3D skybox have you? What did you think the was Citadel made out of? Nothing in that trailer was CGI. And if you think it is, then there something wrong with you. And if it was CGI (which it's not) then they would have made it look much better then that.
 
Just shows you how good the Source engine is, if people are sayin its CGI Quality graphics :p
 
lol im not thick Code, if its in game cool but it dont look it to me.the rest of it is definately but that one little shot. hmm...
 
I just wish ppl would stop thinking it's CGI.

And the blow up town, if you look close it is just one big res texture with in-game smoke and other things added it to make it look real. Thats most likely just there for now so that they could make the trailer and make it better later. If not thats fine by me.

Don't OVERestimate its power, though. It's Valve's full team of artists that are a force to be reckoned with. On a purely technical level, Source's graphics are actually fairly primitive for 2006 (especially the minor graphics upgrade in the 20 months between HL2 and Episode 1).

Noo, it's a 2D skybox. It's fairly obvious that the far background behind all of the trees (some of which look like they're part of the 3D skybox) is either an image composed in photoshop or, more likely, a watercolour painting.
 
nope its a texture just over analysed it myself :p does look good tho.

Oh and looks like you train falls down a ravine (if the alyx on the pipes bit is true)
 
Lets just hope she doesn't fall... Gah that would kill any one.

Nah, that was in-game, but was full of HDR goodness. Probably a little over the top to make it look more dramatic or some such thing. The grass was just like the sprites used for grass in HL2 and the amazing cloud in the distance was very similar to *SPOILER(ish)*

So it's totally do-able without resorting to pre-rendered. Which, in this day and age, would suggest a weak engine.

I think most writers would say that that's the best way to do it. They've built up this great involvement with the character, and the player has personally been with her through thick and thin. In this way, her death becomes less "matter-of-fact", with the player's reaction being a bit of apathy, to "OMGZ ALYX NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"!!

I'd hate to run out of ammo and run from that (most likely faster then you) and scream like a girl down a big hill. That just made me think of a funny teaser for HL2: Ep2. It shows a big hill with a sunset, with pretty flowers for about half a min. Then it shows Kleiner screaming for dear life, then it shows one of those mini-striders chasing him. :imu:

it doesn't do much, Its like the Stalker from Half-life 2, It does nothing.. Only works in a scripted sequence
 
the Green Bunny and I have a (baseless) theory that they're actually synthed-up houndeyes. They're a bit bigger and have armour, but the way they look and move is very houndeye. Combine taking what they like from one race and absorbing it.
 
ehh, i dunno, they seem more like an offshoot of striders than houndeyes. especially since they are called *GASP* ministriders

anyone notice how in the ep2 trailer you are now fighting antlions (in this case an antlion guard) underground. Anybody think we just might end up fighting blobbycheeks the antlion king after all?

It does not look pre rendered. It does look like it was a demo recorded in the engine but with the lighting tweaked for the trailer. The reason it looks a little different than an ingame demo would is because it is encoded as a .wmv (Windows Media Video) file.
 
omgz, its antlion grubs! You probably get to go inside an antlion hill
