For people who wonder if the PC versions of Episode Two and Portal will have Achievements like Team Fortress 2, I just got a confirmation from Robin Walker that both Episode Two and Portal will have Achievements.
...Not only will you get notifications
when you fulfill an achievement, but you'll also get a notification when
you progress significantly towards fulfilling one.

And yes, Episode Two & Portal have achievements as well.

Also reported on csnation.net it seems that Counter-Strike: Source, Day Of Defeat: Source and HL2: Deathmatch will have stats pages so the players can track their stats.

A good thing to hear - i think they did the TF2 achievements really well, and they will do the same for EPI2 and Portal...

****ing awesome! Valve is going head on with Microsoft.

And I think they might just win - they already have the moral grounds.

Its all great, but why oh why is there no achievement for 10 baseball bat kills ! it could be called HOME RUN!

Sweet, I cant wait to have pop-up messages breaking the immersion for me!

As long as they make sure these achievement notices remain a toggleable option, I think everyone will be fine with it. It will probably just use the Steam overlay like the friends alerts.

I always thought achievements were stupid and gimmicky, and was glad they weren't in most PC games...

And Axe Murderer for Pyros who score 10 fire axe kills! :D
Both suggestions are good! Perhaps you should email Gabe about those. Valve shoudl update achievements because they are not so hard to get before beta ends.

Is it turned off in the TF2 beta, because I didn't get notification, depsite already having a few achievements?

Why is everyone so worried about the messages. There are already like 10 messages you get at the start end and during the round in TF2 whats 1 more going to do? Btw they are all great and dont take me out of the game one bit. As a matter of fact i look forward to them and compare them with friends.

I hope theyre togglable in ep2 and portal.

I still want to play HL, not some arcade fps game.

I mean for the first playthrough.

Excuse my ignorance but what the hell are 'achievements'?

They're sort of like trophies. You get them when you complete certain objectives, like killing 1000 people or healing 25000 points of HP in TF2.

I'm guessing there'll be a lot of time-trial achievements in Portal, but I'm having trouble thinking of any that would fit Episode 2 very well. And I agree that Achievement pop-ups in Episode 2 would be annoying.

There should only be one achievement in the first playthrough for Portal and Episode 2; completing the game. It wouldn't annoy you the experience and can still give up updates in terms of how you're doing for achievements.

For Portal and Episode Two, I just hope that they don't intrude upon the game. It would suck to be in the middle of an intense, atmospheric battle, and then suddenly you get a cute little jingle with a pop-up cause you killed 30 Combine with headshots or something.

It's not yet in, i'm guessing they're not done with it yet, since the references to it are there, both in the code and in the localization files.

You can see them here: http://www.xbox360achievements.org/achievements.php?gameID=308

(Besides for the secret ones of course, but those you might be able to guess from the game files)

i don't know if they are toggable, but it should be very easy to do if they're not, so you might suggest it to them, regardless though the movies we have seem from unlocking an achievement seem to very much indicate that they took the levels and story into consideration when making them.

Maybe I missed something... is TF2 supposed to have popups when you complete achievements?

I still love my 360.....

It's about time computer games had achievements.

Will they add it for Hl2 and EP1 as well?. Achievements are to easy on a pc single player what's to stop people from cheating and getting them cause most of my friends cheat so theres no point in comparing.

Sweet, something to aim for when replaying Portal and EP2. I'm sure the notifications will be toggable to prevent spoiling the first run through.

I've seen hl2 / ep1 acheivements files in .gcf :thumbs:

I agree. Achievements have more importance on a console where it is harder to cheat.
Also, with xbox 360 every game has acheivments. Who cares about acheivements for one or two of your 20+ PC games?

Easy:

Code:
if(consoleCommand.equals("sv_cheats 1"){
cheatsWereOn = 1;
}
<later on...>
if(achievementDone && !cheatsWereOn){
   markDownAchievement;
}
else{
   noAchievementForYou;
}

They already do that btw, but it's not that good, you can enable cheats, use a cheat, then turn off cheats, and continue playing.

Or you could use a trainer.

I've heard that one of the achievements for HL2 is
throwing a can at the "pick up the can" guy.
:cheese:

After looking at this it looks like the achievements are gonna be interesting at least...

Heh... looking through that list, it's amazing what "obvious" ones (i.e., destroy the helicopter) would not have been achieved by the HL2DQ team. ;)
