Valve's Erik Johnson was cornered at GamesCom by Rock, Paper, Shotgun's Alec Meer and forced to answer a series of stern questions. One such question follows:[br]"RPS: It seems a profoundly different prospect to TF2, which found a bunch of ways to be a sort of gateway experience to online shooters. Can you talk about whether you’re doing anything similar with this?[br]Erik Johnson: Well, we think that DOTA 1 proved that the game has pretty broad appeal. There are tens of millions of people who play DOTA 1 today, and for us that’s a great indicator that there’s a lot of good things going on in the product. We’re not going to jump in and change all of those things, because they’ve been tried and tested. But DOTA 2?s a product like a lot of our products, it’s going to have a long life after we ship. We’re going to keep building on it, experimenting and learning things."

Neat. I signed up for the beta, though I'm not sure if it'll break me away from League of Legends, it depends on what sort of matchmaking system it uses I think.

I've been learning League of Legends since 'The international' Dota 2 tournament, mostly to familiarise myself with these kind of games. So much to learn and not really my style of game but I must admit....I love it. Really trying to get better now and get a good grasp of different builds on certain champions and work as a team.

If anyone is interested in cutting your teeth in MOBA / A-RTS games and playing LoL (which is free, might I add) drop me a message on Steam and I would be happy to you up and running, either to learn LoL or get prepared for Dota 2.

I'm not sure if it will be able to tear me away from LoL. Will definitely play it if it's free. Not sure if I would pay for it tbh.

Play with me Glenn! <3

I'm not very good.

I'd wager if you want to really acclimatise yourself to DOTA then playing HoN would be the way to go. They are pretty much identical, especially in terms of the community for better or worse (mostly worse).

I've been playing Spiral Knights. Pretty sure it's basically the same thing.

I tried HoN first and hated it. It's much harder to learn, the art style is all too monotone and the community were horrible.

Really? I don't think so.

Haha, if most of HoN's playerbase will go over to DOTA 2 (very likely) as well as the current DOTA community well.. let's just say DOTA 2's community isn't going to be much better.

I'm hoping that they will be heavily watered down with the influx of all the new players :p

Hopefully the coaching system may help new players get good at the game without taking as much abuse, making them less likely to give as much. Also hopefully there'll be some system to report asshats.
