Nestled within our extensive coverage of Splash Damage's forthcoming Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, executive producer Kevin Cloud reveals exactly why the upcoming console editions only support 16 players at a given time, compared to the 24 players of the PC version. He explained that the bandwidth concerns with the peer-to-peer model popular in online console gaming and the prohibitive cost of dedicated servers raised latency issues for anything beyond 16 players.

16 players is so 1998

fairly good Quake wars preview:

I need more hours in the day. How will I find the time to clan for this game?

I was a big Q3F fan. *drool*

ya it's still nothing like q3 fortress ...ET wasnt a mod ..it was supposed to be a sequel to return to Castle Wolfenstein but when they cancelled the single player they released the multiplayer for free

Aye I know. Q3F isn't overly similar to Q3 though (game feel aside), so I was just making that distinction.
Actually I thought Team Arena was fantastic, but it didn't last long. Real shame. Too many free mods of equal or (arguably) greater quality around.

I've played team fortress ..ET is more team oriented with actual objectives that unlock certain areas of the map when completed ..it really is nothing like any other q3 based game ..except RTCW ..the only real similiarities are the classes

Cool...think I'll wait for Quake Wars though. Of course, if I was still unemployed, I'd download it now. :)

play at night ..easy to pick up difficult to master ..played it for 2 years ..right up to release of HL2

I'm not totally sure on actual dates, but isn't only 24 players pretty much the same? Games for the Xbox were at the peak with 24 player servers, how come it's so low for this?

Btw; this is no way an assault on PC or console gaming - I don't want to get into another one of those silly arguements, I'm just wondering as I'm used to seeing PC games - aswell as hearing alot of arguements for pros in PC gaming about higher slots than that of console servers - house alot of players online. Juat a question and a concern.

well it's because of the balance in ET ..at least that's what they've stated ...I think the first one supported 32 players ..although there were a few 64 player servers ..but they just turned into a rocke/flamethrower spam fest

console games (mostly) rely on peer to peer multiplayer gaming and as a result cant handle too many players ..devs would have to run separate servers to accomodate more players

Yet ET, and especially rtcw, were always best 6 vs 6 :)

I honestly don't think 16 or 24 players max is a problem.

Quake Wars is designed so everyone is always fighting on the front line, it's an objective based game, you can't just wonder past the enemy or sneak off and do a Rambo on their base.

Can't wait.

Agreed - this isn't a big issue for me. Mouse control and new maps are. Now if only it'd run well on my pc ....

ever play xbox version of rtcw mp? maps were cut down versions of the originals ..I'm guessing more of the same for ET

Oh, this isn't a problem for me, I didn't know the PC version was only holding 24 players. The games I play now are commonly 8 v 8 (give or take, 6 v 8 or 5 v 7, etc) on a server and that's fine. Usually, anyway. :)

The 24 player count on PC was only a reccomendation, its not capped there. I think 24 sounds about right for QW, 16 was plenty enough for ET, but with the maps being a bit more open and the addition of vehicles, that number might not be enough any more.
