What with all this space-based media hitting our site, we at HL2.net have decided we will build a rocket and travel to the stars. The date of the launch? September 23 - which just so happens to coincide with the release of the Eternal Silence beta - "a science fiction mod which pits two capital ships against each other in a seamless blend of space warfare and tactical infantry combat." For now, you'll have to tide yourself over with the trailer (click the image) - or find out more at the website.[br]
[br]<size=3>Click the picture to download the Eternal Silence trailer.</size>[br]It's looking pretty impressive - almost as impressive as our own rocket! Talking of which, I need to check if Sui secured the oxygen lines. Sui? Sui? Oh, christ.

Ohohoho, oh Sui, always screwing things up!

Anyway, that looks pretty intense, I'm gonna have fake my own death so I can get out of work and play this one.

Still cant wait for it, but the trailer was disappointing.

Looks good, wasnt a fan of the trailer though...

yay artwork is back :upstare:

I can never get these things to play. I've tried Media player, Real player & my DVD player. In all 3 all I get is sound. Am I missing a codec or something?

I agree.

After watching it a few times, I think the thing that keeps the trailer from total awesomeness is the sound. We hardly get any sounds from the game (even if some are still the halflife default sounds, it would help increase the sense of excitement). The music is very meh - It overshadows all the other sounds in the trailer, but doesnt by itself instill much excitement (something either techno or possible metal would have been better).

I DID like the look and the frenetic action going on in space.....we shall wait and see how the interior combat fleshes out. Honestly though, if the space combat rocks, everything else is cake :cheese:

Download VLC http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ and never have that trouble again.

As everyone else I wasn't too into the trailer, but the gameplay looks solid so I'll give it a try.

I liked it, except for a couple of things...

Why do the projectiles look like christmas lights?

I thought the trailer wasn't that good at all. The music isn't good, and when the space ships would shoot, it looks as if christmas lights are shooting out of them. I hope they redo them because I really don't want to shoot christmas lights at ppl.

We've already started messing with alternate laser colors and such.

They won't be done for release though. It will be changed in probably our first or second patch.

I can't wait until I get to play some of you guys Saturday! :) You better be ready hehe

What I noticed most, was that their models were so great looking in the media released (the renders) and ingame they are bland/normalmapless/bright/specularless/... I hope they will fix that. Game seems very well made, wouldn't know it' source if there were some minor changes. Also the big rocks seemed very overbright, and could use NM's.

Terrible trailer, poor music choice, but the game concept looks fun. I would have been more inclined to play if I hadn't watched the trailer. :/ Oh well, I'll still try it out once It's releasd.

The backgrounds seem rather boring... Any of you played EVE Online? And I don't really like the christmas-light-guns either.

Edit: Aside from that, it looks great, and I'll be playing it. I've always thought that there was a lack of good space-fighter games.

The trailer had the same footage in twice... The stars in the background really do look bad. I can't judge the game itself, but I wouldn't have made that trailer like that. Still, I might try the game when its released.

lol @ christmas lights comment. The video reminded me of the space combat in UT2k4, not sure if that's a good or a bad thing. I'm sure I'll find out when I play it :)

For those who are hosting a server, the Windows Binaries are released right now.

Linux binaries are getting released tomorrow.

Check http://es.spawnpoint.com for the link to the binaries.

*Edit* Could someone update the original news post stating the server bins are out?

Why does space combat always have crazy colored lights? Why not just something bland and difficult to notice? Would be easier to ambush.

Looks ace as far as gameplay goes. Ive never been into space combat games, but this might be the break for me.

We don't want every ship to be able to ambush.

Eventually we plan to give the Scout class the ability to camoflauge itself so it can sneak by undetected. At this stage though it's hard to see how that will play out and if it will help gameplay.

We need to make things bright so you can actually see things and not just fire at the outlines we draw for things with the IFF :)

How will boundaries be handled?

Like if I fly out too far, will I hit an invisible wall and die?

And, how was the lag, if any?

Looks pretty good if you ask me. I'd be interested in seeing how/if the space combat dominates the infantry combat...

I'm looking forward to this :)

There is less lag in space than running indoors with the player. It's all perfectly predicted (I think a first for HL2 vehicles). If you fly out too far, your flight computer gives you a warning that you are trying to leave the battlefield and turns you around to face the battle automatically.

I assume there's a lot less physics to predict in space :)

spot the exploit?
that is a ridiculously easy way to lose a hostile on your tail assuming it is that simple...

This mod looks a lot like the Freespace games. If it plays like that, I'll be mighty pleased!

I assume it'll be something like, "Once the ship passes <x> range, the ship automatically "pulls up" until it re-enters flyable space."

That would be cool.

You do realize that with Newtonian flight enabled that you can for example have your velocity going North but you are actually looking at and firing at an enemy on your tail or the South.

As long as you wouldn't thrust, you will continue at whichever vector you were at.

Plus, it just points you in the direction... It doesn't teleport your ship or anything to the middle of the field.

Hmm so these ships will control as if they are Really in space, not like airplanes.?

Anyway. I hope Valve was able to teach you about the strength of mods. They can constantly change and evolve with their userbase. I definately see that you cut a lot of Ideas to get this game OUT, and that was a good move. This shows an unbeleivable amount of promise.

i see the sarcasm there and its just a beta, we will see the rest of their ideas and stuff later. i guess they need a lot of people to test it now

EDIT UPDATE: Eternal Silence is out!!! run to the website as fast as you can

Yeah, it's out now, and VALVe even advertised them in their weekly Steam update.

I just played it for a bit. It's pretty good I think, I suck at flying though, down is up, up is down, left is right... Very confusing for me and I couldn't figure out how to get it how I want it. It'd be cool with loads of people playing.

lol, I sure hope they know the bugs where you can jump as high as the roof if you jump in a specific way, pretty funny looking, and totally fun too :p
