Eurogamer.net published the first online review for Team Fortress 2, The game scored 9/10 and they said it was "ten years well spent".[br]
Making a complicated team-based online FPS like Team Fortress into an accessible experience was obviously one of Valve's objectives. Each map comes with a short video that tells you about the game-type and goals; all the level architecture is distinct when you move between sections, with big sign-posts telling you which capture-point or area you're heading to; and all the weapons and abilities are really intuitive, like the Medic's healing gun, which fires health into your target and illustrates this by pumping little red crosses along the stream.
Read the full review Here. Don't forget the TF2 beta "late in the day".[br]

Looovely stuff.

Edit - S'pose I should've clicked the link before replying. :p Canneh find the article on their site either.

Edit - And now it's working again. I'll get my coat.

Works for me, but it seems a bit random. Spotted the link in another thread and page 2 wasn't working when I tried it then.

I think Eurogamer's reviews are usually very correct and what they're saying is exactly what I want to hear :)

EDIT: Love touches like this:
Visually there are all sorts of effects to enjoy. As the Heavy builds up killing momentum, his grin broadens until he's laughing maniacally.

Yeah that idea of the HW Guy laughing maniacally sounds great to me too!

A bit off-topic, but will cyber cafés have the beta when it's out?

Yeah right

Yeah right, ten years well spent. Let's consider the (incremental) new things TF2 brings to the table.

TF2 = TFC + better graphics - grenades + medigun + invuln + scout double jump (see: most platformers) + spy cloaking (see: Weapons Factory circa 1999) + gimmicks like taunts and snapshots of the kill.

Dudes, I expected more out of Valve: they are absolutely talented but could be a lot more ambitious when it comes to game design.

I will play it and like it, of course, because I liked TFC. But man, 10 years for 3 new gameplay features and a graphics update? Tsk tsk tsk...

Why did he link to suicide girls in the first sentence? Am I too dense to figure out how that has anything to do with a.) his joke about eyesight or b.) team fortress two?

Link isn't working for me right now. God, I wish I had the money to buy the Orange Box early :(

To a point, I guess you're correct. However, what would you have included to make the game better? The "realistic" military style they were messing around with 8 years ago in the first media shots? Games have been there and done that, and some of them are good... but as I say, games have been there and done that. The new style is completely unique, and yes, perhaps it is still the same gameplay underneath, but it's got me excited enough to come out of hiding after a year...

Nice to see TF2 revive you :)

*pulls out giant Bell jar and captures Chris D beneath it

There's no escape now ;)

nope, the guy was absolutely correct. i was gonna post something similar but he beat me to it. Obviously I haven't played TF2 yet, but it's pretty much a certainty that it wasn't worth the 10 years of development. At best it's marginally improved in style and vastly improved in graphics.

Team Fortress 2 was supposed to be the realistic military online games as you mentioned, like Battlefield or something similar. Remember how revolutionary it was gonna be? Scaling graphics, real-time lip synching, vehicles and interactive weapon stations, advanced AI for single player, night-time parachute missions, commander mode for someone to perform a RTS-style management, ninjas and stuff... The game sounded unbelievable. But they took so long scrapping it and rehashing it that they missed their own boat, and many of their ambitious features have been done in past games.

So that's the whole point. So we're left with a game that only offers to look like a cool, fun, cartoon version of the same thing. They could have made this game 3 years after TFC, with whatever current graphics engine they had at the time.

How about two-three new player classes? A more interactive environment? A unique third faction, controlled by the AI (a common foe or a team's friend)?
More/different gameplay types?

You're clearly looking at the superficial points.

But what else is there that's less superficial? I can't see anything other than these points -- but maybe you can point out something I missed?

Would that make the game more FUN? TF2 is TF2 - a sequel. Adding an AI faction would turn it into a co-op game. If TF2 is anything like TFC, then you can create all sorts of gameplay types. Would more classes make it a better game - 9 is already quite a lot...

Valve are working (with Turtlerock) on Left4Dead - a new game and perhaps a genre defining one. I believe they're working on other new games too.

I've not seen a game adopt the creative cartoon look before, it takes some great designing, character profiling, art work, sound recording and animation for something like this, plus a whole lot more. I bet it took them months just to get 1 character polished off and done with.

...and it didn't take them 10 years to MAKE. The source engine wasn't even out then.

Stop now man. You must see that you are innevitably going to get owned. As much as you clearly deserve that, I would have to pity you.

P.S. You keep arguing while I play the beta for this really awesome class based videogame.

Man the ****ing suspense is killing me!

I sure would like to "review" this game for myself, if ya know what I mean ;)

Go make your own team fortress 2 then...oh wait, you can't because your IQ is lower than a chimps. My mistake.

Do you realise how difficult it is to make sure how a player-class is fair and isn't rigged or too weak to use?

and true I, myself would like a more interactive enviroment but I forsee many mappers taken advantage of the source engine to make maps with this feature, maybe you can be one of them? If you map of course.

And a Unique third faction? Sounds Good in concept, but then it wouldn't be TF2 if it has that.

Accept that Valve have done there research, There is a lack of games with graphics like TF2 with its "Not-so-serious" tone. Even with the satrical comedy in it.

To quote robin Walker of Valve "If you put a bunch of guys with guns in a room, and tell them to act serious, it just wouldn't work"

Something along those lines anyway.
You know where I'm gettin at though?

If not, I'm sure the rest of the forum will help you understand.

If you preordered the game how can you play the beta? I don't seem to have access to it for some reason.

Yes, I do. Do you realize that it would take less than 10 years to balance the new class out? Less than a year? Less than a month?

That's kind of the plan :)

Um, no. You mean, it wouldn't be TFC? TF2 could have been anything with classes and fun.

They have done their research, but, if you get my meaning, this is the same bloody research that was done for TFC!

There are plenty of games with good graphics--even the fun cell-shaded kind (remember Jet Set Radio)? I applaud the "novel" use of Lambertian shaders -- circa 2000!

What I'm saying is that I'm playing the beta and it plays exactly like TFC! Which is to say awesome, of course, but shouldn't there be extra oomph, something more?

You have obviously never been tasked with balancing out player classes. It's goddamn exhausting and requires loads of playing and testing.

You can argue that point or not. You can argue that we can't make our own TF2. You can argue that the game has more improvements than just "the superficial". But how can you argue that 10 years was worth the wait? Did it take 10 years to develop this final version of TF2? Well... no, this is the result of years and years of re-doing the game and then they finally had to cut their losses and come up with a Disney-fied TF game. Ok, I'm sure it's gonna be fun and cool, but come now. This is was not worth a 10 year wait.

If you've had nothing to occupy your time for the last ten years then you aren't worth the oxygen.

What, you waited 10 years? Did Valve make you sit in a waiting room for 10 years until TF2 came out or something? How exactly is it relevant how long ago it was announced? Are you saying your response to TF2 coming out would've been totally different if they hadn't even mentioned the name until half a year ago?

What makes TF2 good and worth the wait is not that it adds new features or is so innovative. It's good because it's a near perfect execution of a multiplayer shooter. It does everything right. How exactly is that nog enough for you?

*Scratches head* This is your argument style? Is this how you guys debate things around here?

If you think that it takes 10 years to develop Team Fortress 2 in the current iteration that we see it, then be my guest. I'm not here to convince you to be dissatisfied with how it came out. I'm glad they finally have a finished product. All I'm saying is, no way in hell does TF2 reflect the amount of time it took to release it. No one should look at this game and say, "ah, truly a decade in the making..."

But they didn't work 10 years on it, so I have no clue what you are arguing.

How can how long it takes to be realsed possibly affect your enjoyment of the game? I makes no sense.
