Fallout 3 - Pre E3 Teaser

Holy shit, is the world really that detailed?? I wasn't really hyped for this game, but I think I am now

Yeah, I dunno why but the lack of shadows just annoys me..

I didn't notice anything to be honest, but they're problably gonna include those in the final release no? Doesn't make much sense not to do it by todays standards.

edit - oh I see it now, it does seem kind of empty without shadows

It's good. Several logical errors etc. (a fully working TV set 170 years after the war, untouched couch and chair in a burned down house...) but generally captures the feeling of Fallout.

Still not a proper sequel (a shooter), but the game starts to warm up on me.

Yes because 170 years after a nuclear war there would be nothing left, no mutants especially, just some plants and animals. Let's not let logic get in the way of things k?

Besides, the working tv thing and the whole scene was probably only made for promotional use

Intact. Fully intact with no signs of wear. It wouldn't be. That's stretching it even in a pulp-scifi title.

Please don't be a slavering retard like the newbies at NMA.

They probably won't, they're using the same shitty third-party engine as they used for Oblivion.

They should just do their own engine from scratch or get a GOOD engine like say the UE3 imo..

Yeah, all those invisible shadows really add up to the immersion. And the bloated, ebola-like faces are really life-like too!

The ultimate irony is when the survivors of the nuclear apocalypse 200 years in the future discover that tv's still work, couches can withstand the end of the world, and you can't kill children.

Well, I wouldn't call that engine "shitty". Oblivion is a candy for my eyes. Jaw dropping. ;-)

Heh. Low standards seem all too common lately.

Well dynamic shadows are pretty much a standard in 'next-gen' games IMO, especially when it comes to open-ended games, Saints Row, GTA4, Saints Row 2, Just Cause, Just Cause 2, Mercenaries 2.

By the way, Just Cause and Just Cause 2 are both multiplatform, as is Saints Row 2.

I think it looks quite nice tbh

still waiting for a full gameplay vid

There's hardly any dynamic shadows in UT3 and GoW. It's all static lightmaps. They'd have to mod the engine Bioshock-style, which means they might aswell just add them to their current engine. Not to mention it runs far better.

Character faces/shadows aren't an engine limitation.

I'm interested in seeing some good HD vids of gameplay from e3.

This week at E3 there going to have a live demo!! I can't wait. And for christs sake the couch and tv are obviously for the trailer dammit.

Ugh. You do realise that those "ebola-like faces" were the result of the rather immature face-generating technology that they used, right? They have made a number of major improvements to that aspect of the game so far. I suppose you missed that, though.

Doesn't matter.

Also, yes, there are no shadows there. Unfortunate, but it doesn't kill things for me. Most games don't have shadows projected from every single object, especially ones that are cross-platform, as the performance hit is enormous. I'm certain characters themselves will cast shadows in the full game.

They could at least have the bigger objects project them. Having a large desk stand in the middle of a lighted area and have it cast no shadow whatsoever is jarring.

Oblivion's interiors are a little dull at times, but the game captures an incredible sense of scale and even beauty in its outdoor environments. Maybe you've never seen a sunset while standing on a high hill in the Colovian Highlands. It's definitely starting to show a bit of age, but it is two years old already.

I've been too busy enjoying the landscapes and scale of Gothic 3. Which even has high resolution textures for its environments!

In before "MODS": Mods are irrelevant.

Looks fine. I like. Now they just need to demonstrate some maturity since the feeble, crap dialogue of Oblivion.

And I'm not really looking for cold hard reality in Fallout. So they have a functioning TV in a wasteland. I find it both amusing and eerie.

Well, there was a functional TV in the Fallout intro... and it really did create a creepy atmosphere especially when it suddenly cut off and the silence of a dead city set in.

The point is, it wasn't in a pristine condition and the signal wasn't perfectly clean like in this teaser.

I didn't notice, but I'm guessing its not so much of a problem on the surface unlike underground

I hate the UE3 engine. Oblivion's is much nicer.

I agree, I think in most ways its because Epic over do it with bloom. I don't like bloom. I am one of those people who prefer HDR, but not great amounts

Solution:

MODS!

It's kind of sad it becomes the only solution for making Beth's games appealing, don't you think?

All these sneak peaks are just a smoke screen for a crap game IMO

Just like Oblivion, they kept on harping on about bloom, shiny graphics, bouncey physics and 'smart' AI but never mentioned the real meat and potatoes of an RPG game ie dialogue, story and choices...

I'm very stoked about this game, although I've never played Fallout 1 or 2.

Go figure, eh?

Oh, okay. So if you don't like an answer, even if it is one that renders your point obsolete, you simply ignore it. What excellent debating skills you have!

My point was, that if the developer considered such a system worthy of releasing, then it's what counts. Repairing it later doesn't change the fact that a worse version was considered fit for giving out to the players.

Kind of like a car company releasing a car with a shitty brake system and then refitting them all with a working version.

You do realise they've talked up the skill system and combat and whatnot in interviews more than anything else, right? Or are you just purposely being ignorant like Grizzly here because you can't fathom the fact that your precious game series might actually be done some justice by a different developer?

Ripping out the core design elements such as isometric perspective and emulation of p&p RPG play isn't "doing justice" when it's presented as a sequel, not a spin-off.

First off, only a couple people (you included) seem to have a big problem with Fallout 3, so a mod isn't "repairing" the game since most people here seem pleased with the few bits we know of that are in the game

Also, I don't know how you can be so negative about a game that hasn't really had a proper gameplay vid yet.

Maybe someone put a tv there, you know, after the house burned down?

I won't be able to be a childkiller???
