Fallout 3 walkthrough with combat footage

This is now The Fallout Thread. Stop making Fallout threads!

Why did it take so long for the first guy to explode? XD

Just posted this in the other thread, the second it got closed.

Ah well. I thought the combat was pretty so-so if you ask me, or at least the way it was presented was.

I started off feeling 'aw sweet', by the end I was just 'meh'.

If anything it made me anticipate the game less. Doesn't look like there's any point in fighting in real time anyway. So it seems that it'll be more of a mediocre shooter than a good cRPG..

And that's the Oblivion engine? I liked the look of Oblivion, but this here looks so... 640x480?

This game should've been titled differently.

Cringed at the narrator's nerdy 'jokes'.

But we'll see. Maybe that was just a crappy presentation.

Heh. And all of you decried me for calling F3 a crappy shooter.

EDIT: My brother's impression of Todd Howard: "That kid is Todd Howard?"

The enemies don't seem to react to non-lethal shots. Reminds me of Deus Ex 2. The need to go look at the Resident Evil 5 walkthrough to see how to do it.

Some of the camera angles while attacking are pretty shit too and you end up missing parts.

The first combat part was underwhelming, the way the enemies just run towards the player who has a shotgun in his hands, hmmm, survival is obviously in the minds for NPC's.

I just watched all 3 'big' walkthroughs, Fable3, Resi 5 and F3, they all sucked imo.

I actually thought the combat looked fun. My problem was that they only showed a couple short fight sequences and nothing else. Didn't seem very indicative of the whole thing. There's still a whole bunch of skills they need to show off, as well as talking to people and exploring towns etc. I'm not gonna just knee-jerk and write it off, but I'm definately not sold until I see more gameplay.

Later tonight on G4 there going to have an even longer demo with way more shit.

caught only snippets of it, combat looks pretty cool ..I'm about to be called an idiot again, arent I?

Adopts Ren Voice: You idiot stimpy !!!

Have to say beyond a little sparseness (though it is set in a post-apoc landscape) game pretty much looks as I expected it to. Not too sure about the mini-nuke gun (over the top tbh), but otherwise ok. :D

Looking forward to seeing more RPG stuff though.

oh yeah btw this:-

To be honest... the advertisement is pretty good (except for some of the animation... good M'Atra, the baby popping will be in my nightmares for the next week), graphics are decent (though the landscapes are only Fallout-ish) but overall... the focus on combat is disgusting.

I died inside.

Dogmeat's cool tho'.

Not too encouraging. I started out being impressed with the environment and the atmosphere, but then this video started to give me that same syndrome that Oblivion used to instil in me - ie. that the world is absolutely beautiful on the surface, but that there is little of substance underneath the bonnet.

VATS just looks like some flashy auto-pause system with slow-mo attack animations chucked in. I don't quite get how the real-time combat system is supposed to mesh with it either; if I'm told that I have a 4% chance of getting a headshot, but then I just use the real-time system where I probably have a far greater chance, then what's the use of targeted shots using VATS? Or will the real-time combat just be crippled so that it's impossible to do area-specific attacks using your aim alone? It feels like Bethesda are just yearning to create an FPS but won't allow themselves to go all out and make one, instead limiting themselves to making an RPG-FPS which capitalises on the strengths of neither genre.

Bloody Mess itself looks a mess (quite aside from the perk/trait bickering). None of those death sequences looked even half as satisfying as the 2D animations from 10 years ago, nor do they look like they've been well matched with the gun used. A 'gory' death sequence from a sniper rifle shot to the head entails an unconvincing ragdoll staggering backwards followed by all their limbs exploding?? Cartoon-like and shoddy... At least with the old games you felt some degree of satisfaction along the lines of 'my weapon did that...!' This just does nothing for me.

Just like Oblivion, it seems you have an aesthetically top notch world in which everything else that is intrinsic to the actual gaming experience seems clumsily implemented.

This video didn't even touch on what I would consider to be the most important aspect of an RPG - the writing. So in theory F3 could still turn out to be my game of the year. More likely, however, considering the standard of the writing in Oblivion and the lack of finesse exhibited in the game elements of F3 I've seen thus far, it will be a huge missed opportunity.

EDIT: haven't seen the extended trailer, watching now.

Meh@extended trailer.

I liked it until the gameplay segments appeared... It appears that it's being marketed very much as a shooter, but if I was in the market for an FPS I would get one where the animation didn't look so damn stiff and where I didn't have to pause all the time in combat (and where headshots weren't based on random probability...?). What I do want is an RPG, but until I see some evidence of real depth to this game it's not looking like much of one to me.

And the ragdoll dismemberment looks too contrived - like play models where the limbs are designed to snap off on a whim.

Prepare to be attacked by Kyorisu for not getting on with the times.

They definitely seem to have missed a beat with the whole showing off the combat aspect, rather than showing some interactive RPG footage, however I loved the whole 1950's style advert (very Mad Men) esp the baby factory segment and the uncomfortable expression on the daughters face. I'm cruel like that, but at least I'm not a bigot unlike a certain someone on these boards

Todd Howard is awesome and so is his mom. Don't you punks forget it!

That said, it looks like a load of fun. Cannot wait to immerse myself in the atmosphere.

Funny, but what's also funny is how you're the only one flinging 'fanboy' insults around yet you're also the only person not even commenting at all about the content of the vids, just insisting that they've got you '****ing hyped'. Do you know what a fanboy is...?

You're barking up the wrong tree anyway. On these boards only Grizzly frequents NMA that I know of.

Yes I know what a fanboy is and I only said it once. That forum post is only a joke. Oh, I think think the video was great. the exact kind of game I like, open ended, retro, and your free to do anything you like. Just like oblivion, and you know what? I loved oblivion. The VATS could make the game too easy but it's your choice to use it or not. Also I hope there's lots and lots of voice actors.

I pop over there for S&G, but I prefer to lurk and watch the action unfurl like a slow motion train wreck ;)

And of course you know the official stance of the NMA higher ups.

It's the regular folk that gives us a bad name, to be honest.

I doubt I'll be using VATS much when I get around to playing it. Makes it look way too easy.

That extended trailer was pretty good. Combat heavy etc but this is e3, they haveto try and grab attention. I dont think I'll be using VATS, the idea of pausing in combat just takes the immersion out of it.

The game looks...okay. It doesn't look awful, but it doesn't look great, and ever since the huge let-down of Oblivion, I'm cautious with everything that Bethesda produces. I might check it out though.

OK, keeping in mind that this game cannot be compared to Fallout 1-2, trailer looks awesome! I like the idea behind VATS about pausing in combat: it allows the whole combat sequence not to be *yet another shooter*.
