Hi There.

I'm in an odd situation. I'm a dedicated gamer, I love FPSs, but i've kind of avoided Far Cry, because of the whole HL2 vs. Far Cry thing. Finally, I'm realizing this is a pretty silly way to go about things, and the newest PC Gamer (95%) along with almost every review I've ever read of the game has been pretty insistent that this game is amazing.

Here's the thing. I've played the first demo, and I really thought it was pretty dumb. I didn't think much of the AI (sure, it's very alert, but all that means is that they hide a lot and you don't get a lot of cool firefights. Mostly, you just get flanked) I wasn't amazed at the graphics or physics (guys you kill who end up propped up on their knees) and I just found the voice acting, story, and setting to be kind of lame.

I thought I'd download the research demo to give the game another shot (everyone seems to love it) and I found more of the same. I would walk or swim, only to be spotted by a bunch of guys, and quickly have 25 guys attacking me, and I run out of ammo for my innacurate and noisy weapons. I simply didn't have fun with either of the demos, and yet everyone says the game is amazing...

What am I missing?

Well not everyone's gonna love it, you may be one of those people that FC just rubs the wrong way. There's definately been alot of people bagging on it, but that happens with any game that is so highly acclaimed.

spiffae, that is EXACTLY how i felt about the game. i wasnt going to buy it, but i played sulkdodds copy today and i must say it gets better the more you play it. When i played the demo (and a level on my other mates PC who had the graphics on low) i wasnt impressed at all, and i felt it was just another random shooter.

But after playing the game a bit i realised that its not at all that bad. im thinking of getting it (im still not that sure) but its definately much better than my first impressions.

farcry to me is a sub-par shooter in every way/shap/form except for the technology...

it has lacking multiplayer, a run n' gun sp story thats very cheesey and tiresome, and repitious gameplay patterns that become very linear...

just not that great... im waiting for good patches for mp and mods of course to make the money I paid for it worth it...

pc gamer seemed to just jump onto the bandwagon... or got carried away into the gfx

I feel like that too Spiffae. All the combats just feel somewhat slow and laggy. The whole game felt kinda, ehm, amateurish...exept for MOST of the graphics. And the ragdoll physics didn't work smoothly.

I was impressed by the amazing distances though. It felt cool to look down from the mountain top.

Give it a try spiffie.

Turn it back if you don't like it.

I think the physics worked very well, what was the problem you guys had with them?

I loved the demo...(s)

My playing style has ALWAYS been kill without being spotted, and FarCry REALLY test my ability to do that....bloody fantastic.

it sounds like your main problem is you are going head on, and not planning your attack. use your binoculars to spot as many bad guys as possible, and silenced weapons if possible....and take out radios to keep renforcements from being contacted. :D

I just started playing through again, this time going in a more slow and exploratory manner and this game blows my mind yet again. It's just so damn fun exploring ANYWHERE you see and fooling around with the physics and stuff.

Yeah the storyline got pretty predictable, and cheesy, but I thought the graphics were great.
And the AI does duck and cover stuff because they dont wanna be shot! Only very stupid people are gonna do a full head-on rush with a machine gun in real life. So, they duck and cover, and flank you to take you out.
There were times when the AI did some stupid things tho... they always seem to shoot at the rocks you throw.. there was a guy with a rocket launcher up in a tower, and so I kept throwing rocks up the tower, he'd shoot at the rock, and after a few shots he got killed by the splash damage.

haha yeah the ai definately isn't perfect. But it's not perfect for anygame. Alot of the people complaining about it don't realize that Far Cry's AI is as good as the current FPS get, and it's not likely HL2 will improve on enemy ai much at all.

theres a difference between taking cover so they dont get shot (most games), and hiding in a room off to the side and waiting until maybe, just maybe you pass in front of the door (far cray)

i understand what you're saying though, i lost interest in far cry after 10 minutes

Well thanks for the responses, everyone. I do really get the feeling that most gaming mags and critics feel like they would be too criticized if they gave FC a low score, and they just go with the flow.

A few comments about the AI, plot, and action.

I've been playing the second demo a bunch, and I've really found that the game is an odd mix. On one hand, the graphics are trying to be very accurate, with realistic special effects, and fancy physics. On the other hand, the voice acting is so bad it hurts my head. In the three times i've been through the demo, i've heard a few real winners "hey, you with the shirt!" "i'm gonna open up a can of whup-ass on you" and "i'm gonna lay the smack down on you!" before these supposedly seasoned mercenaries attack. Is the game trying to be funny? if it is, it plays it so straight, and then bam! the guys are throwing you one-liners. Same with the voice overs. Are they supposed to be funny? serious? tough? they come off as lame to me... duke nukem was funny and tough. this guy is just a pansy in a hawaiian shirt.

the combat is getting better. I realized that it was in my interest to get the P90 as fast as possible, and that helps... I've also been playing on easy (something I never do) but i really hated the fact that it took 6-10 bullets to take guys down on hard or medium... If the game is going to be realistic, a shot to the head should kill someone, not 3 shots to the head.

Last thing. In terms of AI, I understand that in real life, no one is going to charge at you while you have a machine gun. on the other hand, Far Cry is not real life, and 25 guys hiding in the bushes does not make for fast-paced action, it makes for frustrating ambushes. I still look at HL1 grunts as the best AI yet... they could hide and shoot, but they weren't seriously trying to hide... they were fun targets to shoot at. I've never had an encounter in FC that came anywhere near any of the set-piece battles in HL. I guess when someone hypes up their AI, i set unreasonably high standards. Smart enemies aren't necessarily the right thing for games like these. You don't see enemies in action movies flanking and hiding... generally they just run out shooting, as i feel enemies in FC should be doing.

I'm still intruiged, and I'll probably keep playing the demo.

anyone else have any thoughts?

Farcry on the left and Half-Life 1 and 2 on the right, that is what it pretty much comes down to. There isn't much new in Farcry(atleast that I got out of the demos) you just run around killing enemies like any other game.
that's the other thing. In the PC Gamer review, they said something along the llines of

"The reason I liked Far Cry so much was because it had so much that I've been missing in games recently"

Like what? Killing guys? Island fortresses? Mutants? Shiny water? Picking up keys? Flipping switches?

Call me crazy, in those two demos, I didn't see a single thing that could seem revolutionary, other than maybe the fact that the levels are very large. What is so "next gen" about Far Cry?

You really think HL grunts were more fun to fight? I hated those guys. You would stand right up to them and unload with the mp5 and it would take like half the clip to take them down and they wouldn't even react to the bullets hitting them. I'm really hoping they fix that for HL2, it was lame to only have the killing shot actually affect the enemy.

As for the combat, I've played through the entire game and I never had an experience where I had to hunt out the enemies because they were hiding. They will take cover yes, but they will continue to try and advance on you if you give them an opening (and sometimes even if you don't.)

But like I said earlier, some people just won't like this game. I really disagree with your opinion that critics have been grading it well so as not to go against the grain. Maybe they just like it ya know

Ok foxtrot your most recent post in this thread gives me the impression that you didn't even play Far Cry. Far Cry is not just "run shoot run shoot", there's just a much if not more to do than in the original HL. I'm hoping that was a sarcastic post making fun of HL fanboys that bash any other fps because that's sure what it looked like.

FC just wasnt the game I thought it was... the voice acting is cheesey like they hired little cs kiddies to make comments at you when the "seasoned mercenaries" attack you like IM GONA KILL YOUR ASS, and YOUR ASS IS MINE... if I wanted to hear that all the time id go play cs... please... also the constant get keycard navigate to building blow your way in, repeat story line gets repititious... the best part about the game is the fire fights which imo are plauged by one liners from enemies... that make me want to punch my speakers in...

the mp gets extremely bad frame rates and lacks structure and content...the implementation of vehicular combat could have been fantastic but the most you see is the occasional jeep mg shooting bursts into the brush... the sand box editors at the time im writeing this only allows for creation of farcry jungle map in which arnt the most exiteing things on earth, they are beutiful obviously but I want mp mods to have other exiteing themes other then giant jungle islands and bunkers... an sdk for people to make cs type mods would be nice to say the least... hopefully farcry's community will save it because frankly it seems like a waste of some of the most amazeing technology ive seen

in hl2 the enemies are effected by every bullet they will sway or cringe using animation keyframe blending or something fancy... its pretty cool stuff they also crumple according to how you shoot them

Excellent news, I didn't see much of it when I er...watched the demos of HL2, but I thought that may be because it was just an early build.

I thought the one-liners were funny... but perhaps I'm just immature...

I'M GONNA SHOOT YOU IN THE FACE!

In fact, I thought a lot of the game was funny... and it was pretty darn fun too! :D

haha yeah that was my favorite one-liner as well, especially the emphasis on face. I see the game as meaning to be campy, I mean look at the magazines you find laying around, "PlayMerc" with those models wearing gas masks and holding rifles and stuff, and that one "Evil Scientist Monthly" or whatever it was.

I played the demo, and I didn't think it was too much fun. But I think I might buy it just because there are NO other games out right now that look fun at all.

Pandora Tomorrow's multiplayer pulled me away from it...

yes, to be honest, I really love fighting those HL Grunts... call me crazy. On the other hand, you're probably right. There seem to be a lot of reviewers who genuinely love this game, and I'm not going to assume they are lying. The thing i'm questioning is the fact that I haven't seen a single review that states anywhere near my opinion or the opinions of some of the other folks in this thread.

Like Foxtrot said, I may end up buying this just to see what the hubbub is all about. We'll see. Thanks for your comments.

No prob man. There has been a couple reviews I think that have given FC a 70 or so, check out gamerankings.com for a good range of reviews. I hope you end up enjoying it if you get it

you gotta buy it!, there gonna make a movie :D lol, !! (I luv cheesey action movies , yay. oo and of course its gonna have the genetic freaks;) .)

Youre not missing much at all. FarCry had good graphics , it was fun to look at for a little while. But the gameplay was HORRIBLE, it had no story , really shady AI , and it didnt inspire me to play at all. I barely beat the first hour of gameplay before I put it away , havent played it since.

I miss playing Max Payne 2, that was the last game I enjoyed. I think I should replay it , but Id have to reinstall and...hmm. Oh and I didnt like Splinter Cell 2 either.

Since I haven't played it, I will reserve my judgement about the full game. But in my opinion, the demo's flat out sucked, and boy did they suck bad.
But I'm hearing stuff about the demo's not being representative of the final game, I'm not yet judging it. I'm too afraid that I'm wasting my money by buying it now though, so I'll pick it up somewhere when I see it lying around <25 euro's.

Although this may not be a fair thing to say since I haven't really played it yet, I think the only reason FC is getting >90% is because of the lack of anything better. I've compared it to MoHAA in a post a few days ago, it was all hyped up, was released in relatively calm times, got great reviews, was called a Half-Life beater. But here we are, MoHAA is forgotten and HL is still king of the FPS. FC will walk the same path I think.
But again, I haven't played it yet so I shouldn't judge it so soon :)

your missing out... if your not going to buy it I at least suggest borrowing/stealing a copy from a friend... or something.

as the Farcry box boasts.... "YOU MUST PLAY THIS GAME" its true, its worth it, just take a chance.

however Multiplayer sucks goats balls (well not really... its just really bland.. reminescent of Quake1) so dont bother if you are only interested in MP.

Well this is what's keeping me from buying the game. If I buy a game I want it to have some replay value. I mean I loved the demo, but knowing my playing habits I would play Far Cry nonstop until I beat it. And if the multiplayer sucks goat balls, what would I do after I beat SP?

What is it exactly about the multiplayer that sucks? Is is just not fast-paced enough? I'm curious because I've been hearing a lot about how disappointing the multiplayer aspect is.

Then there's the fact that I don't have any money.

I loved Far Cry. You can't play it like any old shooter. To actually plan what you should or what you could do in a situation is what makes the game fun.

If you make every moment a "run, shoot" one then yes, the game will get boring. Take advantage of being able to sneak around. You don't have to kill everyone.

The thing with the multiplayer is, it's not that it sucks, it's just completely run of the mill. However, I've found myself enjoying it quite a bit, having those physics and ragdoll in a multiplayer game makes for some HIGHLY entertaining firefights and kills. Also the vehicles are in it, but they aren't really implemented very strongly, they are just there if you choose to use it but if not it doesn't really make much of a difference.

There's deathmatch and team deathmatch modes, as well as a mode called Assault where you have classes of sort that get certain weapons similar to TF or any of the other team-based games lately. One team has to capture 3 control points, the other team has to defend them. Nothing spectacular or groundbreaking, but it's suprising how much more enjoyable the arguably dated modes are with these graphics and physics. It's really something special if you are a fan of deathmatch games at all.

In its favour, the actual game is a shitload better than the demos. But after the first few levels i ended up being bored with it.

Aww, you didn't even get to the scary parts!

No i played the game through, but i was bored for nearly all of it

now i'm completely conflcited... i played the first demo again on easy, and had a relatively good time, but then at one point the guys who i had stealthily evaded snuck up on me and killed me... the last checkpoint was an ass-load back, and i had hardly any health or ammo... i guess it might be growing on me, but it's a very mixed bag... for me.
