IMO the crytek engine is better than the source engine. It can handle high polygon-counts with vast landscapes and real time lighting. Half life 2 has got only small levels with fake landscapes and a bitmap-building just around the next corner, shadows sometimes appear at the other side of the wall/texture...
Half life 2 is the better game, cause the content design is superior. The world is well designed, the characters are better and it gets never boring - imo the far cry world is too shiny. But as a mentioned before the half life 2 landscapes are fake, u go through a big tunnel and thats it.
For modders the capabilties of the cryengine are better. Look at 3dbuzz.com and watch the tutorials for the sandbox editor and u see that this editor is far better than hammer...
Also the community is not that big u can have support at crymod.com - it´s a forum by crytek themselves.

superb post... :flame:Sh4mp00 said:**** Crytek, and EA
If Valve wants to have a competitive engine, they have to do major updates.
That might be true but time will tell. Many companies don´t tell about their new projects and have got strict NDA´s. If I would be a devloper I would sign the cryengine if price and support would be equal. IMO EA signed a contract with crytek not just about their new game...Pi Mu Rho said:More companies have licensed Source than have licensed the CryEngine.
OK far cry is middleware on a half life 2 board -I know- and steam and the mistery around september 2003 are a really good support to the communityPi Mu Rho said:That's because EA are keen to grab as much middleware as they can. The bought Criterion this year too, makers of the Renderware engine.
CryEngine might be a great tropical island simulator, but there's no evidence of versatility and Crytek's support is really, really bad.
Yes the support of far cry wasn´t that good. But there weren´t so many bugs in far cry and the publisher is responsible for a good support. As I know the change of the publisher was a big problem of releasing patches.Pi Mu Rho said:By support I mean support for the engine/game. Fixing bugs, releasing patches etc. You can't seriously claim that Crytek have anything even vaguely approaching a good record on that.
Yeah, great pictures. They look just like Far Cry with conifers instead of palm trees. Don't get me wrong, I think the Cryengine is great at what it does - you certainly couldn't make Far Cry in Source. However, I seriously doubt you could make anything like HL2 with the Cryengine.
The demo was completly done with far cry patch 1.3 and only[!] with the sandbox editor which is on the game disk. So everything is currently implemented.Pi Mu Rho said:I'll go off currently implemented (i.e. used in a game) features, rather than ones that'll be in future incarnations of the engine.
Yeah but i'm not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing. EA have a tendency to treat developers like crap, and favour a profitible game over a well polished and high quality one, most of the time.schoppi said:The design team got after the contract with EA much bigger - I am not sure, but I heard it got three times bigger....

(Note: I said MOST of the time)
schoppi said:So let´s hope tha EA realizes that you can have both...
