Fat America

More than 60 percent of Americans are overweight.

source: This is a problem we must address as a nation. We have become a nation of fat, unhealthy people. In fact we are the fattest nation in the whole world. As starvation ravages dozens of countries around the world, we collectively down another sleeve of oreos and continue to grow wider. As we spend more and more time in front of the T.V. and cut spending on schools physical education programs and youth sports, our children are following in our fat, wheezing, unhealthy paths.

Health Risks

source:
It is simple, if you are fat, you are at risk for dozens of health risks including, but not limited to:
  • Heart Disease
  • Cancer
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • Fatty Liver Disease

Fat Youth of America

Fat kids become fat adults so part of the solution must be to target the nations youth. ( Source: )
A recent study has made a list of the Fittest and Fattest states for children. The states which are fittest have a lot of youth sports programs, physical education in schools, and other programs to keep kids in shape (MA for example has the largest youth soccer organiztion in the US). By following the example of the healthy states, the fatter states can help stem the flow of unhealthy children into adulthood, but only once they recognize the problem.

Fattest
  • Alaska
  • Nebraska
  • Nevada
  • Mississippi
  • Kansas
  • South Dakota
  • Alabama
  • Idaho
  • Wyoming
  • Iowa

Fittest

  • Connecticut
  • New York
  • Vermont
  • Massachusetts
  • Missouri

Youth Solutions

With the new report on childhood fitness state legislatures are going to start pushing for ways to create a healthier atmosphere for the nations youth. Governer Schwarzenagger is pushing for the removal of junk food vending machines in California schools. An effort is underway in Tenesse ( Source) to ban junkfood, weigh children, and promote physical activity, but the school board brings up a major concern that would face a national "Healthy Kids" program: money. They say that the staffing and money would prevent such a campaign which is why this needs to be met at a national level. Increased funding for sports, physical educations programs, and healthy meals is a necessity to help cure this epidemic.

To continue to ignore this problem will only result in an even unhealthier America. What measures can be done to help stop our nations children from growing up with a plethora of health risks? Heart disease has become the leading cause of death in our nation (surpassing the once dominant cancer) and logic denotes that it can be attributed to an increase in unhealthy adults. To ignore the problems facing our nations youth, is to condemn them to a life of health problems and overall difficulties.

Adult Solutions

Once an adult has become overweight, it becomes much harder to control their weight and even more difficult to lose it. They become stuck in poor trends since childhood. To stop the problem we must focus on the youth, for the majority of overweight adults, it is simply too late.

Face it, being fat is disgusting, it is unattractive, and extremely unhealthy, we need to do something about this problem. If you are fat, you are going to face increased health risks. On a social level, fatness is common, but not really acceptable. Physical attractiveness is limited to those who are physcially fit, and there aren'y many "fit jokes" around.

Is it time to bring a fitness campaign to the national level (think no-smoking campaigns)? Will other states try to follow Californias ideas of removing unhealthy foods from schools? Should we explore other options, such as a tax on high fat foods? Is it too late for adults in the U.S.?

Put down that sleeve of Oreo's and go for a jog...if you still can.

Damn...Can't believe my state is on that list.

damn, my state is nowhere to be found, but there are some fat bastards there (maryland) and some skinny mofos

Yay! We're not one of the fattest. We're just home to "cancer alley", heh heh.

Unfortunately, people tend to do what they want, whether it's good for them or not. And, in general, they ESPECIALLY won't change their ways simply to benefit other people (starvation around the world). It's not that they don't want to help, it's more often "Oh, one person can't make a difference, so why should I? There's no point." And, of course, when you get almost 300 million people saying that...well, yeah.

I agree completely, but maybe it's time for people to start worrying about our youth. As someone who is fit I would never let a younger sibling or (when the time comes) to become unhealthy and overweight. I see the health risks, I would not want my siblings or children to smoke, and that looks almost healthy compared to the fatness.

Fat parents need to prevent their kids from following in their path, if they don't care about the rest of the world, the least they can do is care about their children.

I watched a documentary a while ago.

Some obese guy went to the doctor's, and asked Why he was fat.

The doctor enquired, "Do you have any fruit or vegetables in your diet?"

He replied, "Well, they put salad in my Big Mac Meal"

 / :(

:( indeed. A major problem is people not acknowledging that they are running serious health risks by leading such an unhealthy, fat lifestyle. These people are the ones who don't notice/care that their children are getting fat. They are the ones leading to this terrible cycle.

Education is key in this kind of issue. Educate the kids in schools, make public awareness campaigns. Maybe you won't change this generation, but give it a couple of generations.

And fast food outlets need some kind of change, but I'm not sure what kind of change.
Make it cheaper/more viable to do home cooking, I heard eating out is cheaper than staying in, in the States.

If they could change that, maybe more people would be more inclined to cook for themselves, which is usually a healthier option.

Ya, that is my opinion as well. I think we should (need to) spend more money on schools physical education, youth sports, and healthy meal alternatives.

We are spending too much time in front of the T.V., (and the computer), and not enough time being physically active, something needs to change, and should have long before over half of the country was overweight.

It's up to adults to make healthy decisions. If someone wants to be fat, it's up to them, and many are perfectly content with the way they are.

For kids, PE as a more regimined activity throughout school life must take place. Here, in elementary school, we had PE once a week, for an hour at that one session. Then for 7th-9th grade we had two semesters of it, one hour a day. That was the extent of PE for all of school. It was optional to further take PE, weights, etc, but not required. Making it required all the way through school would solve a lot of problems with youth obesity, etc.

define overweight...

just by a little, more than a little, too much... There are degrees to this...Just saying overweight is a tad well, it's not clear.

Having said that - I think it's terrible... but people who let themselves go have only themselves to blame.

I agree that the USA as a nation needs to have a big fitness campaign, that goes to all the schools and gets every1 involved to stop being a nation of fatties.

But this program is only going to work if it has a famous patron to head up the effort and ensure a high public profile - I know, how about Michael Moore?

I think part of it is a breakdown in the family. No1 is around to cook good meals anymore and the kids just get some money to buy junk.

Also, it is considered too dangerous for kids to ride their bikes outside, or play in the park. So a lot of kids are locked indoors, and can only play video games because outside is big bad scary land with child molesters waiting around every corner. I kept fit as a kid by riding my bike everywhere, looking at different places and things, from when I was about 7 years old I guess. These days, I don't ever see any children outside playing. Not on bikes not on skateboards not anywhere around where I live. I see them come home from school and disappear indoors. Or I see them shopping with parents. But I rarely if ever see them riding a bike or doing something fun like that.

When I was at school also, in any year we would have a handful of fat guys. Now when I see kids at the bus stop, I see a handful of thin kids, with the rest of them fat dudes! Hardly a scientific study, but the stats seem to back this up as well.

Not only that, which it is a big issue, but that coupled with simply growing cities.

Not just urban sprawl/suburbs either, just the sheer size of cities and getting from place to place with countless buildings in between. Cars, public transport, effortless transportation are used far more in today's society as we need the extra time.

The schools and PE programs could really stab this problem in the heart though. Not just making more sports available and such. Those kids that need it most aren't going to participate, a mandatory program is necessary as school class credit. As long as it's gauged in the effort you put it out and not performance (I've never had a Phys Ed class that was) it should be A-OK

You cant change someones weight much without changing their diet as well, so it has to be a two stage process. Diet and exercise together. The school can do the exercise stuff a bit - but they just cant get the hours up. They already have to teach a massive bs syllabus in a short amount of time, so its hard to make room for more PE classes unless something else gets cut.

I think that a lot of what is taught at schools is a waste of time. I think that a lot of the people that teach it are too. I cannot imagine that much has changed since I finished. In New South Wales, it used to be that the mark to get into teaching was lower than the 50 % percentile band for the Higher School Certificate. That meant, hey fail your HSC then teach others how to do theres.

At the moment there is a guy who has a website called Bored of Studies
www.boredofstudies.org. He has asked the Board of Studies under FOI to release how they mark and scale students. They refused the request on the basis that it 'was not in the public interest' to disclose the information? WTF? It wasn't like he asked where we keep our secret stash of tactical nukes? So he is going to have to go to the Administratice Appeals Tribunal or whatever the thing is now called to get the info. But what was suspected, was that the board of studies was pushing up every1s marks, to make it look like people were doing a lot better than what they were.

We grow large in search of a way to enlighten ourselves. As our mass increases, we grow ever closer to converting our bodies into pure energy. Explosive energy.

EDIT: Holy Crap. Texas is no longer on that list?

EDIT2: Oh, maybe that's adults for texas, not youth.

It's up to adults to make healthy decisions. If someone wants to be fat, it's up to them, and many are perfectly content with the way they are.

Agreed. We should'nt have a nation-wide fitness program intent on removing the individual choice.

New york is one of the fittest states and yet I still see a TON of fat people walking around. Everywhere you look is fat. If this is "fit" I don't even want to look at texas or other "fat" states...

Its not as bad, and 60% of Americans are obese? Or overweight? Overweight can meaning some excess body fat, but it can still mean you look thin and fit.

Being overweight does'nt mean your unhealthy -- or partake in unhealthy activities.

HAHA, or maybe Michael Jackson! he's good with kids :dozey: good call, any suggestions on someone to lead the national campaign?

I'd say The Governator wouldn't be bad

First off, it says, in bold, centered at the top of my main post, that 60% of Americans are overweight. But, since you mentioned it, as of 2000 31% of americans were OBESE.

-- 63% of Americans are overweight with a Body Mass Index (BMI) in excess of 25.0.
-- 31% are obese with a BMI in excess of 30.0.
-- Childhood obesity in the United States has more than tripled in the past two decades.
-- According to the U.S. Surgeon General report obesity is responsible for 300,000 deaths every year. source

Yes, it does : http://win.niddk.nih.gov/publications/health_risks.htm

You are ignoring the problem, people like you are the ones too ignorant to understand and accept that this is a mjor problem. You present absurd beliefs (being overweight doesnt mean you're unhealthy  ), look fact in the eye (my SOURCE to discredit your ridiculous statements) and pretend it's not there.

Overall medicare costs are on the increase to to increased overweight americans, and , as the problem continues to grow, so will medicare costs. This affects us all, not just you fattys out there.

First off, it says, in bold, centered at the top of my main post, that 60% of Americans are overweight.

But this does'nt mean someones nessecarly unhealthy, which your arguement bolsters ... not to show.

You are ignoring the problem, people like you are the ones too ignorant to understand and accept that this is a mjor problem.

I believe personal responsibility should be upheld for people trying to loose weight -- no one should do anything for you, if you are to learn personal health and responsibility.

stop saying that, it is not true I have a source that backs it up (NIH in fact)

Being overweight could mean someone is one pound overweight -- they could be a star athlete, and your argueing them a lack of health?

Overweight surveys, dont determine muscle mass and height aswell.

I think most people have more than 1lb to worry about....

Whether you measure muscle mass, whatever, say you have big stomach bones - the simple fact is, there are a lot of fat bastards around and we need to do something about it.

Speaking of fat bastards, I weigh about 160 lbs and I am 5'8. Now that works out about 74 kilos - which is on average. Now when I go to check my luggage in at the airport, they say, 15ks only sir, and the rest is extra. But then, you see a big fat dude weiging 300 lbs, why does not he get charged for his extra weight, OR give me a break up to the 300lbs limit? Its just not right!

Yes I agree with the Governator being the campaigner for fitness. I have a feeling that he was already head of the President's Fitness challenge for a few years prior to becoming Governor.

Whether you measure muscle mass, whatever, say you have big stomach bones - the simple fact is, there are a lot of fat bastards around and we need to do something about it.

They need to do something about -- we dont. You dont get it do you? People who've had something done for them -- usually fall right back into being fat.

Taking the challenge and success for yourself, changes your mindset and makes you ultimately capable of changing yourself again, if the problem does indeed arise again. :D

Overweight is not the big question, some people can be overweight and still be healthy, like some heavyweight sports people.

However, the issue here is obesity, that is one step up from overweight, and I don't believe there are many people who could be classed as obese and healthy at the same time.

I think kmack is right - BMI is 25.0 for overweight and 30.0 for obesity.

Healthy is 20.0 -25.0 and underweight is below 20.0.

You can check yours here

But muscle mass is not at all percented into such results, which flaws the actual idea someone is either not healthy, or over-weight due to muscle built.

Muscle weighs more then fat.

yes it does. 2.5 times more.

Unfortunatly, the ones overweight due to muscle mass (you realize that to be overweight due to muscle mass requires AN IMMENSE amount of muscle mass and is reserved for professional athletes or body builders, an average american does not have enough muscle to qualify them as overweight, sorry.) are few and far between. To argue that point is to remain ignorant to the problem. Do you really think that the overweight youth of the U.S. is overweight due to muscle mass (that they can't even develop until puberty)?

http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/overwt.htm

could you at least give some sources behind your argumentative drivel?

Ignoring the problem is fine, but don't try to argue ignorance.

Do you really think that the overweight youth of the U.S. is overweight due to muscle mass

If someone has a bit of a belly, not much, but a muscular build all the way around -- is he healthy, or not?

K e r b e r o s said:

no, he is not, he is at an increased risk for colon cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes (to name a few) due to the lifestyle, and food choices, that lead to "a bit of a belly"

so I take it you have absolutely no sources to back up your ideas that thr 64% of overweight americans are muscular and fit and there is no problem with anyone.

lol.

Just a bit, like a two inch stomache? Geeze! Lets send everyone off to Kmacks Hitler Youth center -- where we will stretch and exercise in unison!

lol.

Do not resort to attacking me when you have lost an argument. You have given NO sources. Made claims I have refuted using facts and sources, your ignorance does not present a persuasive argument, stop wasting your time and everyone elses.

And yes, if you are considered clinically overweight, you are at risk for :
Heart attack
stroke
cancer
diabetes
etc.

go make a new thread if you want to say that america isnt fat, when it is, undeniably fat. Fatter than every nation in the world, more than Half fat.

this thread is about a problem that exists and possible solutions. saying it is not a problem (with no factual evidence to back it up) is pointless and ignorant.

Cool down on the flaming guys.
Every thread in the section Politics, most posts in there have been hardcore for some reason......

Just because someone has a little fat on their stomach doesn't they're going to die for christ sakes.Hell I got a tiny bit of a belly but I'm mostly muscle...you don't see me having a heart attack right now...

gh0sts plan for a fit America:

Step 1) Kill all fat people.
Step 2) Feed fat people to starving countries and the poor
Step 3) Make kids stop eating shitty food so they dont grow up to be fat (even though some will be orphans... but I digress).

I'll tell you whats worse than obesity in America. Its smoking in Germany. Theres a killer.
