Finally - DM_Depot_RC1 Released!

Hi guys, well after a week of pounding out the bugs, performance and gameplay issues on this map Im glad to say this much improved version is now ready for download.

Alot has changed in this version and the main improvemnts being Performance and gameplay. Here is a quick list of improvements made:

-All ladders working properly now, no dismounting issues or jerkyness.

-redesigned some areas to cut down on sniping and help balance out close combat areas.

-Designed the level in a way player can 'flow' around the map easily without having to take a fixed route to get to any location Eg the houses.

- Framerates increased to a more stable 40-60fps most of the time other than when in the watch tower (you CAN see everything up there though!)

-No more invisible walls!! inaccessable areas are now properly blocked

- no more leaks or jomping out of the level (hopefully)

- Tried to balance out spawn points and made so players are not so exposed

-Added weapons or ammo to most spawn points to start player off.

- Train now kills the player if jumping on the train for too long

- Lost of extra detail added to ditches, almost like mini arenas now.

- More eye candy

- Fixed claustrophobic cluttered indoor areas - now are easier to navigate and set traps.

- hopefully just more FUN!

Anyway, I have named this RC 1 just purely for the reason that I know i will have probably missed some little bugs (and still got some to solve) so as ever if you spot any just let me know here.

There will only be one more release after this and that will be final!

Oh some still un resolved bugs are respawnables dont always respawn for some reason (Seems random) and weapons respawn in wierd places (out of the sky?!? - no entities there though)

Is you origin in the sky? weapon will respawn at origin (0.0.0) if the respawn spot is block by some object that happen to move tere.WAG??
 
perhaps, I will test out that in the next release. Thanks for the info
 
this is ace, i played it already :), perhaps the only thing i dont like is the relatively cramped spaces indoors and around some trains,, guess it kinda forces head on comfrontation. but i keep finding it a little awkward manouvering.. other than that its super fantabulistic excellence :D
 
If it plays as well as it looks, I'd say you have a good chance of winning. Of course, I said that to 3D_Mike as well...Good luck, anyways
 
its pretty! it just sucks that i get < 40fps in many areas(by myself). especially with this video card. i guess with that kind of layout its hard to block a lot of stuff.
 
Unphotoshopped screens would be nice, but yes indeed, it looks like a promising map.

I'm almost certain that all those are unphotoshopped. He gave these same screenies whilst in another thread and declared them unenhanced.

It's kinda funny to see this kind of reaction from people. It's so damn pretty they can hardly believe a game is drawing this kind of art at 60fps.

nice detective work :p AA would not create that white, nor any other graphical option in hl2. its some sort of glow filter applied outside of the game, although quite subtle, which makes them look very nice :)

really though, ingame looks great already, no need to spruce up the screens!

my ingame screenshots look same like these pics... they have white borders 2 so must be AA... :eek: :dozey:

normally a sharpen filter in photoshop would give you that effect. it adds a brighter line to make the edge pop up more so it looks like its alot sharper. But since tryppyG here says they look like that ingame, there is no prob, cuz it looks great!
 
Thanks for the compliments guys. The wierd whiteish line around everything come from the way I resize my images in Photoshop CS as I use the 'Bicubic - sharper' method. Used it because it seemed to keep the image quality when resizing, anyway glad you are enjoying this release.

UPS today, could make it by tomorrow :). Visuals are great, hope it plays good...the first one really didn't, which was really unfortunate considering how good it looks :).
 
I cant get it there on time, and as of yet, nobody can post it/deliver it for me over in WA (washington?) so unfortunately I guess not :( quite sad really, but I guess i learnt alot from making this map. I just hope people enjoy playing it :)

Maybe someone who lives close by (I remember quite a few people who said they did when the visits were happening) could hand deliver it for you. I would even though it wouldnt be my $5000 :p
 
You just need to find someone who hands it over to UPS or some other parcel service that offers overnight express. Shouldn't be that expensive from within the US.
 
great map, i have 3 problems with it: 1)you can get stuck in a few places where there is a high straight wall about a foot away from a smaller wall, where there is about a 60-75 degree angle inbetween them, happened to me a few times and i had to /kill.
2)when you are down on the lower track level facing the large combine structure(nice job on this it looks amazing) it is really hard to get back up to a higher level, no ladder or anything for a long distance, maybe you planned it like that i just thought it didnt work.
3) you should be able to crouch underneath the trains and get under, but maybe you did that to stop camping that would happen, i dont know
anyways the map is AMAZING, best one ive seen yet, hope you win-you definitely have a great chance

I think he is in the UK.

I wish Valve had set up a Europe mailing address for the contest. It would not have delayed the final selection that much.

Yeah, I realized that :). What i ment is that he needs to find someone within the US that he can send the map to through the wonders of the internet and have him snail mail it ;).
 
I think the combine trains would be better for the train that runs on the high tracks. anyway, the speed of the trains are great. ssing the thing coming towards you looks great, only that train model, pleace replace it with the combine razor train models. that would look alot cooler, and keep the nova prospect building in the bg.
 
maby some alien transport biomech ships flying in and out nove prospect. give a little change in the sound, hearing the train every 30 seconds get a bit on your nerve, so something else that breacks up the chain of train sounds would be a nice touch.
 
well its truely the best looking map i´ve played so far. GJ

But there one thing that i have to say.
Delete the sky box. and make an 3d sky box insteade.
Because if you have an proper sky that is not a box around the hole map everyone will get much more fps.
Because of the "sky box" the game "draws" more of the map than necesary and there for ppl get lower fps then they could have if it was´nt the huge box allaround the map.

I write this because i dont want to see this map not be played just because some ppl get just like 20fps all the time.

BTW: i get around 40-50 fps
 
one of the cars of the moving train are missing (i.e. a car-long gap in between train cars). you should fix that. that's a huge error.

also, theres a way to get behind one of the walls and get stuck. the walls are drawn with nodraw so you can see through them but you cannot shoot through them. i'm referring to the area at the opposite end of the two abandoned houses on the ground.
 
tight map, well designed, good looking.

Some suggestions:

- There are a handful of spots, like little crevices that I would fall down into and get 'squeezed' in... then my player would move super slow until i slowly moved out of them. I noticed these on the opposite end of the map as the watch tower is. This is a big problem and the one thing that stood out as negative in the map.

- the 2 rooms below the watch towers leading up seem built for midgets - ceiling needs to be a bit taller, med pack needs to be a little higher on wall. This makes it look funny

- When your up on the roof area, near the watch tower, opposite side as the train zooms by. I climb out the window and I jump over some roof vents, going in the direction of the watch tower, and there is an invisible wall - but I can cross it if I go lower. Hmmm?

- The stairs in the interior section (near the roof section I mentioned above) don't look like stairs because you used a flat stair texture.

- Sometimes its hard to get where you want to go quickly, almost like you need to go through a maze and there is one route to get somewhere. This isn't the case - but the other ways can prove difficult & time consuming when things are moving fast. Maybe a few more ladders to get up the side of that short wall by where the train is parked, and some more static objects by the wall on the passing-train side near the watch tower so you can jump up over.

- there are a couple objects, like some boards laying around, that can't be picked up with the gravity gun...
 
This is THE best looking map I have played, however I'd just like to say that I think the train sound should be either changed so the clicks are faster (the train is going FAST, and the clicks of the wheels are slow), or the train should be slowed down.

It kills me because the map is so perfect otherwise.
