Firefly MMORPG. :O

I'm sure it will suck, but as long as the license is alive there's a chance we'll get a new series or movie or something. The series has enough fans to come back under Joss Whedon's direction now, but if nothing is there to keep the fanbase alive, it's going to end up disappearing or winding up like BSG (which worked out well for that, but Firefly without Joss is pretty pointless). Remember, Firefly isn't Star Trek, it can't afford to go on hiatus for years and years. It's not on TV all the time, its popularity is spread by word of mouth and people won't talk about it forever. People need to be reminded that the franchise exists.

Yeah, I really don't wanna wait another 30 years for a reboot of the Firefly series.

I don't really get the idea behind a Firefly MMO.

The appeal of the series were the characters and the mystery of the story. Neither of which will be present.

I rather liked the universe as a whole, too, which is why I'm mildly interested in this MMO, and crossing my fingers, aside from just the Firefly affiliation.

I'm anti-sci-fi channel
I'll never forgive them for canceling Farscape.
Cancelling Stargate SG-1 sucked too - I know it went for 10 seasons but still.
I worry for Battlestar Galactica, I really do.

Firefly's going to be on Sci Fi at 8am EST till around 4pm EST or so, today. :D

Wtf? I just watched the whole series....

I think theres a cool idea here thats been done before (sci-fi universe with customizable ships and different factions), but never done WELL. So we'll see.

Firefly is STILL on Amazon.com's DVD bestsellers at #20, beating titles such as Superman Returns, High School Musical, the Chronic-what-cles of Narnia, series of Lost, the OC, Family Guy, and Seinfield.

Make the damn Season 2 already. Make the damn game already.

Yeah, I suck at guessing the quality of things. And the CG wasnt totally shit. It wasnt amazing... but it wasnt shit.

Damnit, I want more.

Heh, from all I've heard about the series, you'd think SOMEONE would have picked up the rights to a second season on the strength of DVD sales alone...

I game could be absolutely amazing. However for a low key developer to be making this, I don't think it would work.

They are going to have to change a lot and polish a lot of things. I can only see this game as being a free POS or straigt to bargain bin with about as much content as deer hunter.

Hey, now I know what your signature means!

And now that pisses me off because I realize that I dont know why she was saying that... and never will!

Am I the only one who has never heard of this series? Sounds like, if I watch it, I will be addicted. Then I will be pissed cause the series is canceled. Then I will watch it over and over because its amazing. Then I will slit my wrists because there is nothing else to live for.

So.... is it worth the risk? :p

Yes. This series is genuinely impressive to me. I'm considering buying it along with the movie after watching a few episodes...

Its not completely frustrating to watch....we got our big payoff when we got a movie made out of a canceled television show. So its not totally without satisfaction.

I lent my DVD to my friend who's now hooked on it, and she's had it for far too long :(.

If you're asking whether it's worth your life, then yes, yes it is.

I've been developing (off and on) a port of the 'Verse to Orbiter (free space sim, WITH A FIREFLY YOU CAN TAKE INTO SPACE!  ). I have one of the solar systems plotted out and am working on (lengthy) planet/moon texturing work, probably be done end of next year.

Anyway, that's all just background for my points. In delving into the structure of the 'Verse and it's travel/density logistics, I think that this could be a really feasible setting for an MMORPG.

I think there's potential to nip the 'boring-travel' factor by making travel something inherent and really cool to do.

You wouldn't need to have a ship and crew to begin with, there could be plenty to do onworld and travel between planets could simply be paid for, and being a passenger on a PC ship could be interesting.

You've got a setting that goes from hi-tech sci-fi to 1800's with fusion and gravity tech. I think that just rocks. Take what goes on with Eve and add the backwater shticks of the 'Verse and there would be a very diverse background for all kinds of group gameplay.

The risks with this idea is that it would really fall to individual groups to make the game enjoyable for their players. Being cooped up with players you don't like, in space, might kinda suck sometimes. On the other hand, it makes character personality a big factor in play like that, and also reinforces the notion of the setting where space travel is like going out West in the USA during the 1800's.

2 cents..

Jovin I think that'd be pretty good. What about like a job system too. Perhaps you could have bulletine boards where ships could ask for engineers etc and you could make money (Or how about joining the Alliance for some risky undercover work?) Then you could go to all those planets for the rich and buy yourself a floating island? Or maybe if you're a subscriber.

My view on the whole thing: So much potential, so small chance of succeeding.

But that is the very essence of everything Firefly I suppose.

Well, the game's been put on the backburner, so the company can work on a.... Buffy the Vampire Slayer MMO. :|

The link is the interview where they get to explain themselves and this ****ing heinous decision.
I mean, come on... a Buffy MMO?!?!

Heh, I was wondering the other day what had become of this. Oh well, sort of what I expected, and they were probably going to fail at making it as awesome as it could be anyway.

Having only recently gotten into Firefly, I got all excited seeing this thread. I gotta admit I'm relieved its not going ahead because I doubt they would have done it justice. And I hate mmorpgs.

Ditto. Though I'd prefer another season or movie of Firefly before a MMORPG.

Meh, shitty show makes a shitty game and both will get canceled, who cares?

I'm talking about the space cowboy show with bad acting. And worse CGI.

Yeah, that one.

Bad acting? Crap CGI?
What the ****?

Firefly has fantastic acting and CGI. :|

Buffy on the other hand...
