Nice skin... the grenade isn't round enough... im not shure how its done but i bet fenric can help :p

i know mate its to keep the polycount down :) and its the skin that matters :afro:

yep, just need to turn on smoothing, setup groups so the grenade itself is smoothed not the rest of it, should be rounded then without adding more polys, and should work the same in the source engine

as i undestand smoothing groups etier:
add polys or
do not have any effect ingame.

would be stupid to have all these probs with polys, if you could just smooth-group it eh? :)

c'mon guys some comments and crit would be nice... :x

its quite good, but really all it is is some writing and a metal texture, then add a brown layer ontop to make it look dirty / rusted.

PS. nostradamus, wtf are you talking about. smooth groups dont add polys, and they do so things in game. i think you're a little confused.

yes i know what u mean random.hero but it was unwrapping the UV's that i wanted teach myself and i think i did it quite well :) btw here is a nother pic/view:

apart from it been a bit patchy in places it looks quiet good. Infact u have admired me into trying my first skin :D time to get adobe photoshop....

does anyone have any tutorials on skinning ?

i got the unreal tournament skinning 1 from www.3dbuzz.com helps alot :D i also used texporter, its a great tool. hope this helps :afro:

random hero ... i might be no genious, but smooth groups make edges rounder...hence more polys...right? dont see a way around it...but i might be mistaken..never used 3d studio for modeling

smoothing groups simply tell the app or engine how much to smooth groups of polygons, at what angle they will smooth below, anything above that angle wont be smoothed

and to add to Fenric's post, smoothing groups just affect the shading of the surface (usually gourad shading) so it's contiguous between planes. No extra polys are required :)

Also - HL already supports smoothing on models. HL2 will support this and smoothing for map brushes.

Good job on your first try. What stands out the most for me is the rust. If it was more uniform, to just sprayed throughout the whole texture. Take a good look at those grenades here . Try to imagine where the rust would most likely form.

It wouldn't rust.

Argyll is in the candian army. I think he might know what he is talking about. It proberly would rust if it was in water for over 1 year and oxygen had the chance to get to it as well. Also maybe add some salt to this water. But with slpashing and walking through lakes I strongly dought it would get rusty, if it did it would proberly be taken out of operations because it was a hazard to the soldier and its team.

Tbh at the end of the day I don't think any of that matters because its your first skin and u was trying somone out :D looks pritty good, but i thought it was mud when i first lookewd at it.... is it?

It depends on who is handling it. If it belongs to the military, chances are it won't rust. Even if it belongs to a group of Guerrillas, it might not.

Meh.

Heh, i went through the same thing when I posted my skin of my m-83.

Military grenades are kept in GOOD condition. Soldiers don't play football with them for fun, so they are usally in good condition!!!!!!

The ones you see there are most likely purchased froma surplus shop, and the reason the surplus shop has them is because the military didn't want them anymore.... ie they might have rust.
