For all of us Americans: what is a Chav?

Qonfused said:
Exactly.

"Hey, I'm gonna get a Kneenex."

"That's not a Kneenex; that's Dove brand."

"...**** you."
If by kneenex you mean kleenex, then LOL XD
If not, then.. what?

Either way, <3 for agreeing ^_^

i dunno, from the looks of it chavs are cut from the same cloth as wiggers (white kids going for black gangsta culture) and weaboos (white kids going after asian culture) or the combination thereof, Ricers

like what was previously said, it seems like a lack of identity problem. Some dumb kids lack their own personal identity so they just flock to whatever is popular.

You got to know who you are and be true to yourself. Letting your identity be dictated by some massive group that you find popular is for people with weak minds.

I bet England doesnt have as many emo or scene kids as we do though.

Where I live, they're everywhere.

Chavs are non-exsistant, however anything that comes close ('ganstas', wiggers, etc.) are refferred as "Homie G's"

Yes they do, thats exactly what they do.

OK but don't get the two confused. This is important.

Stereotyping = what you guys said

Racism = hate based on race ... i don't know, look it up. I just don't know how to be racist.

I'm so ****ing tired.

Have you guys seen the TV show "Mind of Mencia"? It's 30 minutes of stereotype insults. Sometimes it's funny. Comedy Central channel, week-nights. It should be on right about now. Cya.

Yeah. I mean, I have some ethno-centric tendencies, but thats just a feeling of superiority, not hate, so not racism.

I want to go to the UK. Is it legal for people to carry a police baton there?

Bleah... Looking at the chav definition I suddenly realized we have them here in Romania too. Nowhere on Earth is safe you can't get away from them. These guys that act hard, listen to rap or hip hop, dress cheesy, like big necklaces, here are called "baieti de cartier" translated it means neighborhood boys. I HATE THEM I WISH THEY WOULD DIEEEE!!!!!

A chav is like a hick trashy gangster here in the US, only with a bad accents and worse teeth.
Bad accents? Sure, the Thames estuary vernaclular is a linguistic atrocity (as Dylan Moran put it: "Oi cahm 'ere on a plllaynnn, yoo cahnt.") but I wouldn't say it's any worse than a trashy hick Yank accent. Those are just comedic:)

As for bad teeth *Shudders* There's a chat show over here called Trisha (after the hostess, Trisha Goddard) which has some of the scummiest people in Britain on it (a tall order and no mistake) and they must have a quota of missing teeth they have to fill every episode. If the guests aren't collectively missing at least ten teeth, the producers get busy with a claw hammer.
It's a great TV show.

Up to our eyeballs in 'em we are.
Ah, the indie try-hard set; how amusing you all are. I'm unashamedly indie, but I'm not desperate to follow the absolute cutting edge conformity to whichever "The" band is en vogue that week. I'm just lazily subscribing to an image I feel an affinity with without looking desperate - instead, just looking f*cking cool :)

A Chav is a working-class stereotype and scapegoat used widely by middle and upper class British people in an attempt to pin down what they feel is wrong with their communities and to legitimise an irrational dislike, fear and feeling of superiority over those below them on the pay-scale.

Real Chavs do exist, but only in the same way that some Jewish people have big-noses and a ruthless materialist greed. Large sections of the lower-class population are routinely demonised by the media and general population for displaying any of the symptoms, or for simply being lower-class. The whole thing has been blown out of proportion and what was once a harmless jab at lower-class behaviour has become something rather more malicious.

I must clearly say you're plain wrong

What bloody town do you come from?

Many places are swarming with them. Chav is not a working-class stereotype, far from it.

Basically there are a lot of different groups of people in Britain.. two that are easily confused are Townies and Chavs.

Townies HAVE money, and work for it - very often middle/working class. However they tend to be essentially living for the weekend. By and large there is nothing wrong with them, however they tend to have a dislike for students. They look down on chavs, who they seem to be scum, and troublemakers.

Chav families tend to live on benefits, with women getting pregnant as a career choice. Fathers will be either Absentee/detained or just scraping by on the dole and petty theft/dealing. Chavs themselves tend to be between the ages of 11 to 19. Hang about and generally cause trouble for other teenagers. They pose little to no threat to anyone their own age - all mouth they are. Those who don't grow out of it grow up to form chav families.

Hope this helps.

I'm not wrong, I just don't allow myself to get intimidated or scared by a group which is clearly less substantial than you seem to believe, and I'm getting tired of people whingeing about Chavs all the time. People seem to be turning into old-folks, convinced that kids will kick them in the spine everytime they walk past because they hear about all those young hoodlums. They need something to pin everything bad in the world on, and people earning less money than them are always an easy target.

I didn't think saying what I said would be particularly popular, but that just goes to show how firmly entrenched this dislike is. It's dangerous for those who come to fear, and it's dangerous for those who got wrongly labelled.

That's by far the most clear stereotyping you could give! Sure, by your definition they're not "working class", but I was using "lower" and "working" interchangeably (though I suspect that's not an accurate way to do it). I know many of many people who would fit parts of your description, but not others, particularly this whole "benefits sponge" idea that people seem to love splashing around.

oh...we have plenty of these....not 100% chavtastic but quite close!

don't know who these guys are i just took some examples how they like to dress and behave!

the bad thing is that every kid now wants to be a muther****ing raper...god how i hate these kind of people!

QFT.
Not a popular viewpoint around here (as I have learnt) but closer to the truth than people want to believe.

 At the risk of using anecdotal evidence - chavs round here are the ones that kick windows of resturants in, burgle shops, and are the reason that the local Wetherspoons now closes at 11PM, and there is a no hat and hooded top policy. I've had friends jumped by 6 or so chavs. I've been sitting in a cafe enjoying a meal with friends for a mate's gf's 19th, and had some scummy little twat brick the window. It's not a fear - we don't walk past fearing for our wallets and our lives.. it's a bloody fact.

I don't judge anyone till I have some experience of their behavior. A few of my friends here would be considered borderline chavs. They're not as I described, so they're not chavs.

It might not be common elsewhere (I know it isn't in Lincoln) but the benefits sponge is VERY common in Faversham. However families pull themselves out of that culture - and are much better off for it.
I agree though, it is dangerous to mindlessly fear and incorrectly label, and that class is an inaccurate way of describing things.

Ok. Chav = Evil, stupid, whatever. So must beat some sense into them.

ComradeBadger said:

But the sad fact is that there are probably other people who would call them Chavs at first glance and lump them in with real problem cases, and I get the feeling that there are many of these judgemental people. Indeed, I don't think anyone is truely above being judgemental some of the time, but the whole Chav hysteria just promotes the idea that it's ok to look at certain people and judge them as scum.

Oh and poor Wetherspoons. They're magnets for the same behaviour in every city :P My guess is it's the prices. They can be pretty darned reasonable which means either that they attract the "wrong" people (I suppose that's dangerous stereotyping there) or that people just drink that little bit extra that makes them violent.

Or perhaps it's Stella. That stuff makes anyone violent.

Student bars don't get the same problems as Wetherspoons though.. and they're often even cheaper! :p

:E

But on another note, I think we've reached a good agreement here.

One question, I remember something about "counsle houses" and chavs. Anyone care to explain?

****ing hell. This is a ****ing phenomenon. WTF? Does every single word in the vocabulary have an abbreviation?! Granted, the vocabulary seems "vast" but .. **** ME you guys really have a problem. I don't think they know how to spell any of these words anymore because they never use them. They probably think anyone that knows how to spell more than 5 words is a geek. They wouldn't get caught dead accidentally using any unnecessary vowels.

It's like a whole new version of English. It should be called 'Ngysh' or just 'Shit' for short. I've never seen such a horrible infestation of stupidity. Never in my life. It's like a joke on the back of a kids box of cereal where you try and translate this garbage while you eat sugar puffs.

Good luck in life kids!

Ah **** it. Call me an old ****er.

here's what you got to understand, chavs and the like are not a race or religion. Its an amalgamation of ideas, concepts, and fashions scimmed off rap videos that appeals to people with little personal identity and no taste.

Don't defend them like they are some kind of endangered species or something.

If someone is acting like an ass in your vicinity and making a nuissance of himself, you should have every right to address the situation.

I love this guy - he's hilarious:

I think Chav stands for Council Housed And Violent and in Scotland Chavs are called Neds (Non-educated delinquents).

Its really nice to know that other people understand.

I HATE it when people type like that, or even worse, when kids talk like it.

The strangest thing ever has happened. A lot of the chavs I know seem to have discovered Runescape, that online rpg game.
Overhearing chavs talking about "levelling up" and "owning noobs" is just wrong on so many levels.

They're invading the internet! Nobody is safe!

True. Use to call them neds a few years ago, but stick with chav now.

Wi' mah boattle ey buckie an' mah burberry cap man. Pure mad mental.

OK recoil, you be batman and I'll be robin. We'll costume up and stand on chav faces.

Chav/anti-social behaviour has always existed, it's just now the media gives it more coverage.

Skinheads and punks of the 70s and 80s anybody?

It's true that they've migrated from old industrial areas into traditionally nicer areas though.

Come on Badger, "chav" totally became synonymous with "working class" in the media over the last two years and, whilst I don't consider it to the extreme the kupoartist does, the media totally hopped on the bandwagon for a load of mutual back-slapping, hand-wringing and blatant classism.
I'm not saying there aren't chavs (although I prefer scally :P). I'm not saying chavs can't be c*nts. It's simply observable that the for quite some time a lot of people in the media acted like "chav scum" and "working class" were the same thing. Classism came to the fore because of it.

I see the middle finger is quite popular in Europe.

Yeeah but let's be honest - the media is rubbish :)

Oh, totally!
The sad thing was that the more the media equated "chav" with "working class", the more clueless people believed it.

And soon, with any luck, I will be part of that hideous canker of society, the media. Onwards and upwards :D
