I have a pretty nice collection of hollywood classics imo

now I'd like to get into foreign cinema a bit. I just ordered Malena and Lucia y el sexo. Any comments on these or any other suggestions?

btw I dislike Lars von Trier, don't know why but his movies just depress me

Jeez, there's tons of stuff.

Das Boot
Como agua para chocolate(Like Water For Chocolate)
Spoorloos(in USA called The Vanishing)
Lola Rennt(Run Lola Run)
Abre los ojos(Open Your Eyes)
Y Tu Mama Tambien
Amorres Perros
Hable con ella(Talk To Her)
Cidade de Deus(City of God)

Those are the ones that come to my mind right off the bat. That's just semi-recent stuff, you still have Kurosawa, the rest of Pedro Almodóvar's films... that should be enough to start with. :)

ps I liked both Malena and Lucia y el Sexo.

Hollywood movies is foreign cinema to me :) But yes Das Boot is worth getting..

Some great Anime:

Ghost in the Shell(1 and 2)
Read or Die
Evangalion
Also, if you can find uncut DBZ and Yu-Gi-Oh, it might be worth it.

Yeah I thought I would enjoy Dogville but it just left me cold TBH. My dad's a big fan of The Idiots though...not seen it myself.

la haine(hate)
gr8 french flick, got the 10 anniversary edition dvd 4 xmas

A lot of the foreign cinema I watch are action movies (Hong Kong Blood Operas, heroic tragedies, those types of movies), so most of what I can recommend are those. There are a couple on here that aren't though, and are more drama/artistic films.

A Better Tomorrow series
Fulltime Killer
Avalon
The Returner
Sharkskin Man and Peach Hip Girl
La Virgen de los Sicarios
Together
Friend
Man on the Train
What Time is it There?
Shaolin Soccer
Wasabi
Leon (The Professional was an American movie [with a French director] but this is the international release)
The Killer
God of Gamblers series
Casshern (highlighted for greatness)

I'll also make a nod to watching anything from Akira Kurosawa. Seven Samurai, Ran, Rashomon...I noticed that you have a WW2 mod linked in your sig, so you might want to look at Rhapsody in August.

If you end up liking any of the action movies you should check out Versus. It has no plot to speak of but it's got more highspeed action than you can shake a stick at. I tried to once and the stick exploded into a fine powder.

As far as anime goes, Akira of course is a classic. Almost anything by Hayao Miyazaki, something like Mononoke Hime or Kiki's Delivery Service. Hotaru no Haka (Grave of the Fireflies), beautiful WW2 story. GiTS and Read or Die were good suggestions.
Evangelion's a series, not a film (unless you count the ending film). If I were you though I wouldn't take Napalm's advice at all. Sorry Napalm but Dragon Ball Z uncut is exactly like the cut version, save for hearing "chikuso" and "kisama" a lot (cursing). And Yu-Gi-Oh is the same thing, except for scenes like Bakura tearing out Pegasus' eye and licking the blood off it, or Yami Malik killing his father. It's really no big deal. If you're going to watch an anime series I recommend something like Slayers or Escaflowne (the movie of that is ok, but has nothing to do with the series which is much better). I'm currently watching Bleach but only the first five episodes have been released in Japan thus far. If you want to talk anime I could suggest some things.

Right now though I'm going to go watch a couple of foreign flicks myself (just got back from the videostore).

Other countries make movies?

Anyhoo...anime is, well, anime guys! Come on!

"Life is Beautiful" remains one of the most moving and overall beautiful movies I have ever seen.

Yeah I believe Bollywood produces more movies than Hollywood. Never watched a Bollywood movie at the cinema though, and never seen one all the way through.

BTW Bollywood is in India.

Try some British movies, at least they'll be in English, if you can't speak another language.

"Stalker" by Andrei Tarkovsky, great movie. Also try to get your hands on "Irreversible", you've probably heard of it. It's a tough movie to watch but well done and very disturbing.

Hey thanks for the replies guys, lot's of great stuff there to check out :D

Whats the name of that movie with the kid who decides not to grow up? He has a drum he carries around, it was a real good flick. German movie I think.

Amelie (one of the most perfect films in existence)
City of God
The Motorcycle Diaries
Run Lola Run (well, it was quite good)
Delicatessen
Battle Royale
Hero/Crouching Tiger.../House of the Flying Daggers (they're all rather similar, but definitely good films)

taxi

Lucia y el sexo, is quite porn, tbh, I only watched the porn parts, hehe

You forgot City of Lost Children (done by the same director, the brilliant Jean-Pierre Jeunet)
Despite my love for Monsieur Jeunet, I haven't seen that. Although I'm really looking forward to seeing A Very Long Engagement, despite the fact that the title is rubbish en Anglais and the trailer is so Hollywood sentiment glitzy rubbish that it makes me cry.
Although Audrey Tautou makes me cry also. I love her.

It is excellent. One of my favorite foreign films of all time. I have not seen A Very Long Engagement but I think I will check it out this weekend.

Audrey...

Is it out this weekend? Brilliant! And Audrey makes me feel fuzzy inside - Tautou and Hepburn.
I really need to see Dirty Pretty Things.

That bosnian film? forgot it's name. It's a bout the bosnian war. Pretty cool film.

Oh and disregard all and any finnish "movies".

Blast; 21st of January in fairest Blighty. I'll bet it's not even on in Reading (where I'm at uni). Berkshire sucks balls really badly sometimes.

I watched Malena yesterday, excellent movie. Beautifully shot and both intertwining stories are very entertaining, the story of Malena is especially gripping. There were one or two short scenes I thought should have been cut out, but I have the special edition so maybe they're not in the theatrical cut
