I think it's more accurately translated as "god from the machine" (lowercase god). A deus ex was something used in ancient Greek theater. Basically it was someone or something who showed up at the end of the play and just automatically solved everything.

[EDIT:] Sorry, I forgot this. The full phrase is "deus ex machina." Doesn't make much sense without the machine.
