Gabe Newell: Supporting Deaf Gamers

Don't forget Eli's leg.

****** lost it kicking in store windows.

Decay guy doesn't shout his own name as a means of communication though, which I felt misrepresented handicapped people massively.

He says that Alyx has a crush on a deaf person. Does this mean that Gordon was deaf all along and that's why he doesn't speak?

It is possible he's mute. That would explain why he never says anything.

Does he even moan when hit anyway? Impact feedback was always an HEV thing.

Gordon had an accident and his vocal cords had to be removed.

Alyx feels bad about her "man of few words" comment when she finds out.

They said the deaf person was someone she knew before meeting Gordon. It was in one of those videos.

If you listen real close to the HL1 sound files, you can occasionally make out a voice that's barely audible. Just groans and stuff.

Ok, just thinking about this now (hindsight is great) - are we looking into this too much? . . . are we making a big deal over something which may be . . . well, nothing?

I think its amazing that Valve often do tours of their offices, even more amazing that they would take the time and effort to tour a group of deaf gamers. Personally I would love to see features for deaf gamers implemented, as they will most likely offer some aid to the hearing as well.

Also, I am very curious to see what Bay Raitt (the Gollum Animator) was saying to the group after Gabe left the room...

Ok, I'm confused. It's nice that they had the whole lecture and everything, but why would they go to the trouble of putting sign language in-game? Couldn't deaf gamers just turn on the subtitles?

Rumor is Valve will be fixing TF2 with features for the deaf and they will use it for HL2 ep3

It's not planned as an accessability feature. In-game sign language is introduced as a topic as a way of exploring character expressiveness in the games. Gabe is asking whether it would be interesting to have a character use sign-language, but ultimately it's a novelty feature that aids characterisation. The entire cast wouldn't start signing, and the rest of the interview is about what features could be added to the existing subtitle system be more deaf-friendly.

Somewhere I heard someone suggest a tiny little Gabe Newell in the corner of the screen signing everything a character says, so the deaf can understand it.

No but seriously, the only real thing we're now sure will be in EP3 is subtitles and CC, which will be there anyway.
Still waiting for the real news...

features for the Death

Strangely ominous!

That interview/meeting was quite interesting, even though a few times Gabe was strangely blunt about questions to the point of being borderline offensive.
