Well here we go. I know the code got stolen and being a network administrator, I know very well the potential army of zombies PCs if the code was not re written for security purposes. However, in seeing that Valve in its emails in answering questions that HL2 is was and still is a work in progress. It is absolutely apparent that HL2 was not anywhere near completion in September 2003. I find a very big problem.

When Gabe lambasted NVidia for its sub-par drivers and hardware, he stated that if HL2 were optimized for NVidia dragging it down, "Valve's customers would be Pissed." He also went on about current hardware, implying that we should buy into the current ATI Radeon series and what not.

Many of us gamers bought into Gabe's hype and went out and bought new Video cards for the new Half-Life Game. Most of us went with ATI Radeon products. We all expected that the wait would not be for long. Now it will not be out until next summer. Those of us last fall bought new hardware that is even now a lot cheaper, and will be much cheaper next summer and will be at that point OLD News. My Radeon card has already dropped about $50 and I didn't really have a need to purchase a card besides for HL2 at that point and that was before the HL2 coupon bundle. :flame:

Many of us will probably will buy another card this summer or when HL2 does come out so we can have the top of the line graphics again.

You gotta wonder if Gabe and his crew all had stock in ATI or something with the way he hyped it. Maybe CNN should sniff around...

Guess what Gabe, Many of your customers are PISSED..... :flame:

I don't remember Gabe, or anyone at VALVe, telling people "HL2 is coming out in x days. Go upgrade your system, otherwise you'll be missing out."

Point being, you chose to upgrade, as did alot of people. VALVe never told you, or forced you to upgrade. Also, some people HAVEN'T upgraded, and decided to wait until HL2, D3, FC, STALKER, etc. are closer to release. Alot of people also decided to wait for the next crop of hardware coming in spring.

You upgraded, VALVe didn't make you do it, it was your decision.

I agree with the original poster. There was allot to be said to what happened. Yes, it's obvious that Valve and ATI had some kind of deal going on. That and they did pretty much say that thier game would run like crap on a non ATI card and that their game would need a new card to run stable. There's no reason to get defensive. It's the truth.

I do think that valve shouldn't have pushed ATI products so heavily, but you chose to upgrade....

I am pissed, but I didn't buy my ATI Radeon 9800 pro just for HL2. I also bought it becasue I play many other games. I just hope that Valve doesn't revamp the hole game so my video card doesn't cut it.

What the new prospective deadline does mean, however, is that those folk who bought an ATI card recently in order to be able to play Half Life 2 will eventually be playing it on hardware that is a good six months old. And, as any fule kno, six months is a virtual lifetime in the graphics card business.

And summer, as any fule also kno, is easily three months long, so the nights could be drawing in and the corn harvested before any of us, save those naughty thieves, of course, see anything of Gordon Freeman II.

Sheesh. µ

I always wait the preview of the software before I buy the Hardware. :)

A game is never 'finished' it is just deemed shipworthy. Even with them feature freezing the engine in 2002, that only means that they aren't adding any more innovations to the code. Models, textures, levels, AI even are still subject to change and polishing. Valve have 8 Coders and 22 other staff in other areas, it's natural to assume that if the coders have to work on securing the source code, the rest of team are going to take the opportunity to buff up other areas, or address those little issues that they felt weren't just right.

now I wont be bothered, (not that HL2 has anything to do with it) I have decided to sell my comp and invest the cash into my Airsoft gear (who needs games like counter-strike or AA when you can play them in Real life).
I also retracted my Pre-order money for Hl2.
*note: this isnt due to delays and whatnot, just the fact that I found something cooler (and my friends are getting into it too) - thanks again Snowball.

I should have my sweet sweet m16A2 and G19 this weekend. :D

YOU TRAITOR!!!! ;( ;( ;(

and its not valves fault that you guys bought radeons, you guys do have control over your life, right?

I'll say this: Valve are marketing geniuses. They created a gigantic hype back before Sep 30th and the eventual delay. Gabe's reply to several of my e-mails regarding which card to get for HL-2 pretty much sold me on my decision of getting a 9800 Pro. I was foolish in that my main motivation for getting the card was solely for HL-2, cause I of course wanted it to look and play like the E3 vids did, seeing as how that's the card they were running under at the time. Now I do feel sorta gypped, but it was MY decision, not theirs. I feel sorry for those that got the XT bundle with the coupon; I don't think those cards will have any problems running HL-2, unless Valve pulls a Broussard, but the fact that those who got the XT partly because of that deal now have to wait so damn long to actually put it to use. I think Valve had a heck of a lot of us convinced before the leak that it was going to make Sep 30th, their E3 presentation was something from the likes of the wizard of Oz. Heck, made me think it was polished enough for the go ahead last fall. I doubt it was their original intention, however, to see such a drastic delay put on their title. I'm sure the leak was one of the main factors that set it back. If indeed it was as incomplete as what was provided in the leaked beta, then that in of itself seems like marketing suicide, why advertise a product so heavily and with such flair if you know it's going to go out of the limelight for a good while? They'll probably whip up a comparably impressive package for us at this year's E3: let's hope it will instill the same hype that the original presentation did last year.

.... wait a sec... you mean all this time I been listening to Valve... and they AREN'T the voices in my head?!?!!?!?!
naw I was agreeing with the wasting money part, not because of HL2 (as I stated) I merely wasted money.
I didnt upgrade just for HL2, I upgraded for modeling, BF1942, and every other cool game I played at the time.
I also bought a radeon the day it came out (the radeon 9800 that is) before Valve said anything about it being better than Nvidia's for HL2. :p

ofcoarse you did :p , and pigs can fly WHEEEE

Spitcodfry I refuse to read that until you break it into paragraphs.
But I will say this....
You bought the hardware without waiting for the game. You. Not Valve. Did Gabe come to your house, point a gun at your head and tell you to go and buy a new video card? NO! So stop your bitching.

if you did read his post, you would have realized he wasnt bitching, he was agreeing with the notion that he should not have bought into the hype.

lol, if you arent going to read his response, dont reply to it.

unless Valve pulls a Broussard

Yes, I was somewhat shocked to see that he (Broussard) referred to a forum poster at 3d Realms, who owned a 2ghz with a Radeon 9700 saying,

Those specs are pretty much what I consider the minimum. but I don't recommned (sic) buying hardware for the game now, and things could change over time.

I'm glad Valve have catered for those of us who arent multi-millionaires that can afford to upgrade their system within every minute. To say the least I was far from impressed by this comment by George.

"A GeForce 4 will be crap this time next year."

He said that on Feb 2003, weeks before I got my brand spanking new PC with my trusty Geforce Ti4600, which has dealt with every new game I have played so far , including demanding beasts like the Far Cry demo. However that said, I'm still looking forward to DNF, though not nearly as much as HL2!

Ok, I can understand that people are pissed off about forking out that money for those cards, but consider: HL2 will STILL, when it is eventually released, run incredibly well on your 9800pro or whatever. As will Far Cry, Doom3, etc etc etc. The fact is that although six months may be a "life-time" in the gfx cards world, your cards will still be extremely good and they'll hold up fantastically for ages to come. Personally, I've been using a GF3 since it was released - 2/3 years? - and it's only had troubles with the most recent games, and the rest of the time it's still very solid. Your cards won't be cutting edge in 6 months, but so what? It's not a bloody competition.

Point being, you chose to upgrade, as did alot of people. VALVe never told you, or forced you to upgrade.Point being, you chose to upgrade, as did alot of people. VALVe never told you, or forced you to upgrade.

Thank you Shuzer. People seem to have a very hard time grasping that Valve didn't knock on your door, take 1000 bucks for that new computer, and hand it to you.

If DNF is the slice of heaven tech-wise that he is touting it to be, then the graphics better blow everything else out of the water. I'm gonna be pissed as hell if it's just 'alright' whenever it does actually come out. It wouldn't surprise me if it was just decent tbh.

Already games like STALKER are creating modeling/texture quality on buildings that looks photo-realistic. Based on Broussard's comments, I bet he's going to have dynamic lighting encompassing every dame face in the game world! Maybe he'll include reflections in people's eyes or something as equally over the top detail-wise.

And who's gonna be able to play it with decent fps? Him and Carmack? Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see earth-shattering, revolutionary graphics in a game, but I'd also like to be able to play it without simply drooling over videos I get off Fileplanet.

The one thing I don't understand is why ATI have been so understanding given that they reportedly paid a whack load of cash to bundle hl2 with the XT cards.

Also people who bought said card have a right to be annoyed at the delay given that they've already paid for the game. Imagine buying a new car going to collect it being told to come back next week, you go back next week, still not done “come back next week”, next week they tell you that “you can have your car at some undisclosed point in the future” and to add insult to injury the car salesman army of fan boys then assaults you with claims about how the sales man owes you nothing and quit you wining and that the sun shines out or said salesman’s behind. Most people by this point would have called the police.

So there you have it valve (or possibly ATI it’s hard to tell) is the used car salesman of the computer games industry.

That analogy is all wrong, you were never promised a physical copy of HL2 with your ATi card, you were promised a voucher to receive the game once it comes out. Also, you never paid for and purchased HL2, it (the voucher) was a free bonus to buying a top of the line graphics card. And yes, the people who purchased one of the cards received such a voucher.

Didnt the XT line come with a FREE copy of HL2?

Edit: I mean didnt the XT line come with a coupon for HL2

Your 9800 XT or whatever you bought will play the game the same in 6 months as it would have if the game were available now. Only the date has changed. No performance difference.

i almost upgraded my system last year right before the release but then doom3 got delayed first so i put off for a little while, glad i did. shortly after doom3s delay comes the hl2 delay. im just now starting to build my new comp since ive now got max payne 2, halo, and soon to be farcry. that should hold me over till doom3, stalker and hl2....cant wait to ditch this old P3 @ 667mghz and TNT2, getting real sick of running alot of my games at lower res and only getting 20-30 fps. BTW, my new system is gonna be
AMD 3200+
1gig PC3200
160gig western digital
radeon 9800xt
audigy 2
undecided mobo
thermaltake xaser 3 case (black with side window)
thermaltake volcano 12 heatsink
thermaltake 480watt PSU
logitech Z-680 speakers. ive had these guys hooked up to my GC and PS2 for about 2 months now, simply amazing speakers. ive managed to shake the floors of my house with every shotgun blast in resident evil.

I believe that my fx 5900 will run hl2 just fine, DON'T BUY INTO THE HYPE!!! :sniper:

I think we all need to take a break from Half Life 2. I find myself cruzing these forums at least once every day just to see if anything new or any interesting conversation has sprung up. But alas, I have been here ever since July (I changed my sn b/c i forgot my password, lol) and since that time my time in these forums has been nothing but empty thoughts and words...after all, this is just a place where you write what you think about HL2, but it hardly alliviates the anticipation that we all feel.
So why should we spend our time talking about a game that we KNOW will come out. It seems I am in a more anguished state than happy one about the release of Half Life 2. I would love to forget about this game. I think it would be so much better to be that guy that accidently stumbles upon HL2 at the local game store. If I were that guy I would most likely buy it because I thought the first one was good and I would go home, install it, and not have a clue what its about. That would be so cool.
I think we all need to lighten up...forget HL2 for a time...and just be happy that WE ARE GETTING A SEQUAL. Don't you guys feel so good that we are getting a sequal to the best game of all time? And on top of that, doesn't this one look better than the first? Well, god damn it! Let's throw a ****in party because we should be happy about it and we let Valve do whatever the **** they want because they are the geniuses that are making this game. If they think the game needs more time...**** it...I say give em another year!

maybe you stop making excuses for acting like sheep to gabe, and just admit that you are sheep. it was your mistake you rushed out and bought one, NO ONE ELSES!!!

I am a sheep. Baa. Baa. I had no idea Gabe was into that shit.

its funny how people act like gabe took their family hostage and said if you dont go out and buy this "product" i will kill your family, get over the fact that you dicked yourself over, its not valves fault, they dont owe us JACK!! and they shouldnt feel sorry or dissapointed that they let some fans down for the delay. btw, keep up the good work valve, we all know HL2 will be awesome

Valve was a factor for me to build a brand new computer. Though HL2 was not the only factor in me deciding to build a new computer. You see, before the HL2 announcement, I had been out of PC gaming around 4 years. During that period of time, the only computer games I played was Starcraft, Diablo 2, and SimCity 3000. Being poor wasn't too much fun, especially since you cannot upgrade an old laptop. So instead of me spending 200-300 dollars on a graphics card, I spent 1700 on building a new computer. While I am disappointed that HL2 or Doom3 isn't out, I am more disappointed with the lack of progress in PC gaming. So, I can't directly blame HL2 for me spending alot of money on my new computer, but I do feel betrayed for some reason.

In fact, the only thing I enjoy about my new computer is that I never have to worry about virtual memory again! ;)

One more thing, my graphics card, a 9600 Pro works pretty well with PC games. However most console ports, like Halo and Need For Speed: Underground have problems running fast on my computer. What bugs me even more about these console ports is that most of them don't support AA which is probably one of my favorite functions that my graphics card performs. Since both HL2 and Doom3 are full on PC games, I have no doubt they will run relatively fast on my computer.

it's important to upgrade your computer for future games that will require the boost, unless you're happy playing starcraft for the rest of your life :naughty:

Ran fine on my Celeron 255 back in the day
Shoot...I remember back in the day when i had my P200 with 48 megs of RAM (that was huge back then). Now that was an awesome rig. Then like two years after that, I added a TNT card I added another years worth of life (till I fried it) to my PC for 100 dollars. Why cant PC gaming be like that? Crap, my new PC isn't even 6 months old and it feels outdated.

"Many of us will probably will buy another card this summer or when HL2 does come out so we can have the top of the line graphics again."

Definitely, I'll be almost definitely buying one from the latest line.

But am I pissed? Not at all. Now I'll have even better technology to play the best game ever made, Half Life 2, hopefully it will improve the graphics as well as the fps. :)

The game is done when it's done, let's just hope it;s this summer and not next year :)

Besides the delay till summer 04 (or April, according to me) means more time to save up for the next best graphics cards :)
