Gameplay Issue

I have a 100% legit version of Half Life 2 that I've just reinstalled through Steam on my new laptop. I'm playing it just for kicks right now and am encountering a lot of problems. First, load screens take as long as 5 minutes at some points. Second, when I look at the console to try to see if I can figure out what's going on, it tells me that while attempting to load the game there were files that could not be opened or were not found. I'm not sure what some of the files were but I know a few of them were sound files. Also, the AI was broken in some places. For instance, when Father Grigori sends the cart to you right before the graveyard segment, I was not attacked by any zombies. Furthermore, when I got to the otherside Father Grigori told me to "follow him" but stayed where he was standing. I got past this part by just running ahead of him to the next load screen. Finally, I can now go no further in the game as the Vortigant that is supposed to tell me to pick the pheropods off the dead antlion queen is exhibiting the same behaviour as Father Grigori. Any help would be much appreciated.

Oh yea, one more thing. Whenever I load the next stage, I get a message that says that my "Node Graph is out of date. Rebuilding...". Also, if I load my game it quite often tells me that the AI is disabled for no reason.

Good for a laugh or two. Other than that, you're on your own.

So you're saying the no one at all has ever seen this problem, has no expertise with this kinda thing and that I'm thusly screwed?

Or do you think I have a pirated copy and am lying about the 100% legit part?

I'd re-install, and if that didn't work, my head would explode. If it told you exactly what files you needed, maybe you could have a friend transfer those files to you.

EDIT: Ignore that last-half. Just re-read your post.

Try this:
Put ai_norebuildgraph "1" at the first line of config.cfg in steam\steamapps\(steamaccount)\half-life 2\hl2\cfg\

Well...your problem normally occurs in pirated copies. So we have a right to be suspicious.

You can verify your game files through steam. If all else fails you can re-install the game.

go to steam, right click HL2 and select properties. then under the local files tab there's a button saying "Verify integrity of game cache"

Verify your HL2 files, as said above to fix most issues. Also ensure you have the latest version of directx installed, as well as up to date graphical drivers for your graphics card.

Your issues are mostly associated with a pirated version of the game, and the fixes we have recommended only fix the legitimate Steam version of the game. If you are using a cracked version of Steam these will not work, and we can't help you. (This site is hosted by Valve Software).

Also, does your laptop have the power to play Half-life 2 properly? Have you looked at the specs the game needs to run? Posting your specs will help (start, run, "dxdiag")

wait.... serious?

When steampowered goes down, we go down! Valve took over hosting this site many years ago to support the community. <3

McBane you don't know for sure he was using a pirated version, many legitimate versions of the game get this issue, I hope he rectified it.

Sure SOME of the issues, but ALL of them? Files missing, AI disabled AND node graph out of date? That's pretty much impossible with how Steam works and verifies everything.

Come on.

yes, i had that problem too because i had pirated version. But that problem is fixed in episode 1 but not in original hl2. Bah... that ai_disabled thing was so iritating.

Not neccessarily due to a pirated version. It could be the files are corrupt for any other reason (fragmented files, corrupted files due to a virus, corrupted or missing files due to a really bad copy/paste job by the end-user between harddrives or some other erratic end-user behaviour), but it's most likely to be due to a pirated copy.

The load times themselves could just be down to not having enough memory (but could also be down to memory leaks because of a crap-ass pirated version).

Notice how he left after we convinced him the site is owned by Valve. Roffle.
