I pretty much stole this from a penny-arcade thread, but its a good thread. Anyway i'll just copy my post

Games that weren't worth it

Halo 2 and Doom 3.

when they came out all the magazines were giving them great reviews so i went out and bought them both, only to be greeted with the same repetitive gameplay experience from them both (Both games had totally different gameplay, but it was all extremely repetitive). Even spent another 50 bucks for Xbox Live with Halo 2 and i dont play that at all now.

So in total i spent AUD 150 bucks on Halo 2 and didn't even get 70 out of it, and only got about 65 out of Doom 3 when i spent a 100 on that. Sucks really. And now Bungie are bringing out a map pack for Halo 2 that they want us to spend more money on. What a crock, i mean its 9 new maps so what. i'm not shelling out another 50 for 9 new maps on a game i dont play, when i can just get UT 2004 for 70 AUD and get over 100 maps and tons better gameplay. Not to mention i can download maps for that game, for free.

Far Cry was another. Just dont like it even though everyone kept saying its the best FPS since Half-Life, it just sucked. Thinking about selling it on Ebay because i've tried to replay the game 5 times but i get bored everytime i reach the Trigens

The best game purchase i've ever had was buying a Half-Life 2 coupon from a hardware company that was late with a delivery. They offered it for 35 bucks so i took it, got Half-Life 2, easily the best FPS since the first and i got CS:Source with it, and Valve are still making new maps for them for free and they're quality maps too. And with the original HL. Got it for 50 bucks and got TFC with it, great game. Sorry to bring HL2 into it but i thought it a valid point, as i totally scored. It would be like spending US $15 on it.

That map pack should be free if Bungie wanna apoligise for that shit ending.

As for Games that were worth it

Half-Life 2 for reasons that i explained above

Ninja Gaiden : Best adventure game i've ever played in my life and the only game that i've replayed over 7 times on the same difficulty. I dont think i've done that with any other game that i have ever played. Love it more then Half-Life 2 and any other game in the last 4 years.

Resident Evil 4 : Great storyline and kickass action, actually worth buying a Gamecube just to play it. Not the best game to replay but the Mercenary mini-games are great fun little time-killers.

World of Warcraft : Most expensive game i've ever played and one of the only games thats lasted longer then a month. The only other game thats done that for me is Operation Flashpoint. Been playing 4 months and its great fun. Largely due to the people on it, as if it was just a normal RPG it would suck. Not the best game ever but its still great.

What about yours?

(Just an opinion thread, no flames if someone doesnt like the game that you do)

Games that were worth it

Halo 2
Fantastic game, easily the greatest console game ever and the most fun game ever. Also the best party video game. Great story, cool graphics, amazing music, awesome gameplay, great replayability and the best multiplayer out of any game/mod. Easily one of the best first person shooters created.

Half-Life 2
Incredible game. This one is really good for its value. Great story, amazing graphics, cool gameplay, cool music and tons of mods will enhance its replayability. I found that it gets a bit boring after playing the 3rd time through, and its hard to get back in to. But once you do get back into it, you'll find yourself playing this for ages. Can't wait for some quality mods to come out. One of the best first person shooters.

Doom 3
Wow. Incredible graphics, great story, addicting gameplay, great replayability (i know its weird, i finished this game 8), amazing design, very cool locations and weapons and stuff. Also one of the best first person shooters out there

World of WarCraft
Greatest MMORPG ever created. 'nuff said

Unreal Tournament 2004
HUGE HUGE amount of content, great graphics, fantastic gameplay, etc,. One of the best first person shooters.

Games that werent worth it

Rome Total War
It was cool and all until i finished the campaign once, then it became rather boring

Condition Zero: Deleted Scenes
Alright first time through but then pretty much no replayability.

Games that weren't worth it :

Commandos 3 (PC) - I'd played both Commandos and Commandos 2 before, and really liked them, even though Commandos 2 was critisised for being to dependant on Hot-Keys. Truthfully, I got used to it after a while, but others musn't have wanted to go the the effort to get used to them. Apparently the developers took this to heart and included no hot-keys ! Instead of hitting "q" and selecting a enemy to knock him out, now you have to scroll through ALL the possible actions until getting the "hit option". Doesn't sound too bad, but when you've got 3-5 weapons it gets annoying. Adding time limits to missions was idiotic as well. Grabbing Explosives, planting then on SIX armoured vehicles (all with engineers prepping them at the same time) and escaping detection at the same time is nearly impossible in *10* minutes !

Games that were worth it :

Half-Life 2 - You can probably guess why ...
Ground Control 2 - A very good strategy game that seems to be sadly overlooked by most of the gaming community. Instead of Building a town and rushing with tanks, you have to capture "Victory Locations" (Usually Strategic Choke-points or Usable Radar Installations and so on) to gain "Ap" (Ability Points) which can be spent to purchase new units which are brought in via a Drop Ship. Sounds simple, but it ain't. A team or two of infantry can easily destroy a tank battalion if you hide them in a building, equip them with rockets, and ambush the batallion in a street, then move between buildings, using cover. Add Off-Map Support Weapons plus Co-op (!) and you have an excellent game. Playing with a friend is SO much more fun than going solo.

Those are three I can think of at the moment.

Games that were worth it:

Warcraft III - I spent $50 on this total and I've played it since it came out. I still play dota games

Halo - I love playing MP with friends. It hardly gets old.

Half-Life - Played it a couple times and the mods have made it worth it

Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal - I sold a game and paid $7 total for this game. I've played it for over 30 hours and I still love it. More games should be like this.

Final Fantasy VII - Probably the best RPG ever. 'nuff said.

MGS Series - Great games, story alone is worth the dough.

Games that were worth it:

Neverwinter Nights. The game I have spent most time in ever, for 12 months it was pretty much the only game I played. User created modules are the win.

Planescape Torment: You have not played a game with a good store until you have played this.

Clock Tower: Scariest game ever.

Warhammer: Dark Omen: Best RTS I have ever played.

Games that weren't worth it - Half-Life 2, so much promised...so little delievered.
Doom 3, so much hype...and we get a tech demo.
Halo 2, Oooh look it's Halo with destroyable vehicles and shiney things!

not:brothers in arms
vampire:the masquerade bloodlines(shoulda been so much more but i dont really play rpgs so that explains more my view on it)
eh...thats all for now

Not :

Splinter Cell : Pandora Tomorrow - Dissapointing SP.

Far Cry - such a shitty FPS

Rome: Total War - Extremely repetitive after a while.

Yes:

HL2 ...

Splinter Cell 1 - What a great game!! Amazing SP... brings a tear to mein eyez just to think of it

Mafia - Best. Game. Ever.

Worth it:

RTCW on the pc, multiplayer only. Played in a clan with my mates for about 4 years. The greatest teambased shooter ever made, and worth 20 times the asking price for how much enjoyent I got out of it.

Halo - still the best tactical single player shooter there is, and amazing in co-op. No other similar title requires as much practise, skill, and offers as much challenge and room for improvement.

Half-Life - one of a kind. Great because of how simple it was. You were just a guy trying to survive a day at work gone to shit. Everyone could relate to Gordons plight - and as such you became the protagonist more than in any other game before, or since. (a shame he became a super hero in the sequal)

Secret of Mana - my favourite game. Charming, lovely, magical, perfect - made all the better when experienced with 2 friends

Mario 64 - imo 'the best' made video game ever. Can't be faulted.

Golden Eye/Perfect Dark - the most enjoyable fps i've played, challenge, replayability and more guns than you could ever want :)

Zelda OoT - Amazing!

System Shock 2 - only scary game around, truley compelling stuff.

Planescape Torment - best writing and atmosphere in a video game.

WoW - have spent 11 entire days out of the last 2 months playing it /o\

(Have to stop now - add another 50 good games to the list :))

Not worth it:

Doom 3 - Generic, average, graphics over gameplay. Nothing like the originals (in terms of feel or gameplay) aside from the name. Actually managed to take the genre a step back imo. I only so disappointed beause I wanted it to be so great.

Worth it:
Far Cry - I for one enjoyed Far Cry all the way to the end and have played it a couple times.
Half Life 2 - Heh, need I go on?
Not worth it:
Rome Total War - Got boring fast :-\

Worth it:
Halflife 1: Unbelievable gaming experience that still fun today. Then they'res the mods, which almost make you feel you didn't pay enough for the game

FarCry: One of the rare games you can actually replay the situation several times and still have fun/be suprised

Halflife 2: Alot of the same reasons as the 1st game

Warcraft 3: Fun singleplayer with a good story, and despite having the worst community and most annoying players, multiplayer is extremly fun (Custom games mostly)

WoW: Greatest MMO i've played. Though it has some flaws (Lag, whiney community etc.) still kicks the crap out of the compitition gameplay wise.

Not Worth it:
Halo 2: Playing through the singleplayer was more of a burden than actual fun. The multiplayer too was overrated. Worth a rent, not a buy

Doom 3: Repetitive, and the multiplayer sucked big fat peen

GTA games: Novelty of going on a crime rampage wears off fast.

Morrowind: I must say the games I mentioned before are are actually kinda fun the first time around, not with morrowind. Sure it does offer you open endedness and character customization, but that doesnt change the fact that it's boring even for an RPG. Also the combat sucked real bad

Starcraft - For 5 Years this game held me to it's grasp...forcing me to play it :).
Diablo 2 - Played this one for a long time.
Half-Life - All those mods... :)
Half-Life 2 - I wonder why..
UT2004 - Loving it :)
Diablo - I loved the oringal :)
Hitman 2 - This is what I call replayability.
Call of Duty - Amazing Singleplayer
Warcraft 3 - Hero Sieges :).

Not?
Farcry - Sorry, I couldn't bring myself to finish this game...
Rainbow Six 3 - Worst money I ever spent..dun even play this game for more than an hour total combined.

Worth it:
Doom 3 - Just like earlier dooms but with better graphics. Nothing wrong there.
UT2004 - Only for the mods/unrealed.
Championship Manager 03/04 - Best manager game out there, FM2005 doesn't beat it even though it's made by the same team.
Grand Prix 4 - If you like grand prix sims you need this game!
Pro Evolution Soccer 4 - I'm not footballs biggest fan, but this game rocks.
Zelda: The Wind Waker - Great game. Not as good as OOT though.
Chrono Cross - Didn't play this until really recently, but it's a great RPG. Up there with FF7 & 8. Nicer character models too.
Ground Control 2 - Those mortars... mmm.
Civilization III - One of the greatest strategy games out there.
Ceasar III - Great city-building game.
Kinda worth it:
Sid Meier's Pirates! - Cool game, but gets very repetitive.
Thief 3 - Making this for the xbox at the same time as the PC ultimately closed Ion Storm down. Small levels, loads between parts of levels, your view is locked with the character model animations making you move clunkily.
Not worth it:
The Sims 2 - Cool at first, but when the graphics wear off it's exactly the same as the first, but much harder to get custom content into.
FM2004 - The championship manager series heading in the wrong direction, crap interface.
FarCry - Pretty boring after a few levels. Haven't even completed it.
Call of Duty - Boring scripted crap. Nothing you do makes any difference because it's all scripted lameness. It's like one of those lightgun games, but you're not stuck totally to the track.
Perfect Dark - Loved Goldeneye, couldn't see why people liked this though. Lame.
Warcraft 3 - See through the spin, boring game.
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines - Buggy, slow, not a good game at all.

yay another pro evo player, do you have it for oc dog?have you got it patched?community patched i mean.

Worth it:
HL2 - Very enjoyable game
Doom 3 - Amazing graphics, truely bowel moving gameplay
Far-Cry - although i haven't completed it i love the stalk and snipe gameplay
UT2004 - The only game that gets close to having a multiplayer as fun as goldeneye
NFSU2 - Bling Bling
Super Mario 64 - still play this regularly
PD/Goldeneye - superb FPS from Rare
Zelda:OoT - another classic
Banjo-Kazzooie - almost as good as SM64

Not Worth it:
Any Final Fantasy - i mean WTF was that about?
The Sims - Apart from perhaps playing "God" in sim-city and flattening a town, always brought a little smile to my face
Zelda:MM / Banjo-Tooie - can't get into them:confused:

Worth it:

HL2 - Best FPS, period.
WoW - Spent 15 full days in total playing it according to the statistics (yes, 15x24 hours). Nuff said.
Freedom Fighters - Surprisingly fun game, no incredible classic, but much closer to it than all the other hyped up big games that pretended to be. Underdog title.

Not worth it:
Far Cry - Just bought the full game recently, and my god, it's boring. Any game that makes me cheat (weapons, levels, godmode etc) out of boredom after a few hours is plain bad. Awesome editor though, and had a lot more potential than it showed. Maybe for FC2.
Rome: TW - Don't get me wrong, fantastic RTS, but in the couple of months I had it, I've played it 10 times max, I just can't get into it. So not worth it in terms of money/quantity.
Doom 3 - I was pretty excited about it, impressive trailers, great potential for multiplayer. And actually, despite being 4 player limited, MP was one of the reasons I got it. With Doom 3's fully dynamic lighting, that could have created some nice tense ambush action. Turned out to be plain deathmatch, but without any quality.
Halo (PC) - Yawn. Stopped being interesting after metal hallway #25224. Goes for the Xbox version too, but that has the benefit of co-op and mp'ing with buddies, which is a big plus.
Mafia - Sorry, might be the best game ever, but can't get into it. I hate the awful music too.

Games worth it

FF series - Best RPG (semi-adventure if you like) games ever made.
GT series - Nothing comes close. Need i say more?
MGS - ...Who does'nt know MGS is worth it?
Tokyo Extreme Racing (PS2 game - was'nt rated very good - first one on Dreamcast when i had it) - I really do think this is one of the best street racing games and the customization was really good.
NFS - A good series and there isn't many of them EA can hold to their name (i know they do good sports games but i hate sports games)
FarCry - Still my most favourite FPS ever made.
Doom3 - Good fun to play, scary even if the whole imp-spawn thing gets old as you get further in.
HL2 - Good game.
WoW - Quite possibly the best PC game ever made tbh, no PC game gives me as much joy as WoW has/is. Blizzard > everyone.

Games not worth it

Splinter Cell - Its supposed to rival MGS and i just can't see why its rated.
Halo - Completely worthless, boring, copy&pasted FPS throughout, hated it! saw through it after the Xbox's 'Novelty' had worn.

man you think like me in gaming terms, i agree with like everything you said there :D .

For oc? I guess you mean PC, and yeah I do. I have Wolf's option file + real kits from http://www.pesfan.com. I downloaded them a while ago though so there might be newer versions.

Doom 3 - Just like earlier dooms but with better graphics. Nothing wrong there.
Did you even play the oringal Dooms?
The oringal Dooms were about having fun, sitting back and killing shitloads of guys.

Doom 3 was made to scare you. I dun see how you can say it was like the earlier Dooms.

Were Worth It:

Halo Series - Pure fun.
Battlefield 1942 - Best Multiplayer game IMO.
Rise Of Nations - Best RTS IMO.
Burnout 3 - I like car accidents...
Splinter Cell 3 - Not as good as I thought it would be, but still pretty fun.
Conflict: Desert Storm - I love this games Co-Op.
Half-Life 2 - (duh)

Weren't Worth It:

I really look into/rent games before I buy them, so I don't have any games that weren't worth buying. :p

Woth it-
Grim Fandango-Best game made on this here fine Earth
Mega Man X4-Just because
Guilty Gear X2-Very fast-paced 2D fighter
Starcraft/Brood War-I do not need to explain
Day of the Tentacle- 2D adventure gaming at its best
Beyond Good and Evil- Severely Underrated Action/Adventure
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3(NES)-Who didn't want to play this in 3rd Grade?...Anyone? Guess it was just me
NOT worth it-
Devil May Cry 2-This is a charicature of the first DMC; DMC3 is much better
Back to the Future 3 (DOS)-Can't remember why, but I get frustrated just thinking about it

yeah sry pc, yeah i have wolfs patch v3.0 and his last op.file, although i dont like the edited stats for alot of players :hmph: .

Worth It:
Descent Series: That was the game i grew up playing. D1 and D2 were basically the same, with a little advance in gfx, but D3 brought a whole new realm to the D series. I was very good at it, and ended up placing 5th in the all world championship :).
Return to Castle Wolfenstien, Enemy Territory: Possibly the most fun MP FPS of the time. Held me in its grasp and i had soo much fun playing it.
Medal of Honor, Allied Assult: Great graphics for the time, and i use to play MP alot. The SP was very scripted, but still fun.
Call of Duty: Just freekin incredible. I used to love to play MP before all the little 12 year olds got there. Hacking really began to ruin the game about a year after its release.
Halo (PC): Just an extreemly fun game, It had good graphics, and i liked the MP portions, becuase unlike most other games, it took skill, and people could not bitch about "realism" becuase this was not set on Earth during our time.
Games the Were NOT worth it:
All the Expansions for MoHAA: All they were was the same game, just with new weapons. All the new levels felt like you had already played them, and the new weapons wern't that great. There were many more people playing MP MoHAA than any of the expansions.
Doom 3: Just a boring FPS. It was very predictable. Lights out, monster sound, lights on, you continue around the corner, monster attacks.

Finnaly someone is talking about KOTOR

Worth it:

Resident Evil 4-Great storyline, great graphics, amazingly fun gameplay.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas-Amazing gameplay. Cool story. Extreme replay value (I've beaten story mode 3 times already and I still keep replaying it).
UT2004-Extremely fun MP.
Halo-Great SP until the Library. Then, its just the same levels as before after that. Me and my friends played MP until the release of Halo 2.
TimeSplitters 3-Hilarious, entertaining plot. Awesome graphics. Awesome weapons. Best MP I've ever played.
KOTOR series-Amazing, great, awesome stories with interesting, unique characters.
Max Payne series-Film noir stories with addictively fun gameplay? Max Payne games are like a slice of paradise.
Metal Gear Solid series-Like said before, the story is worth the 50 bucks alone.

Kinda worth it:

Half Life 2-Yeah its good, but its not that good. Its just a FPS with cool physics and graphics. Plot's good, but was still a little undeveloped.
Doom III-Another "its good, but not that good" for the same reasons for HL2.
Chronicles of Riddick-This game had it all. I loved it. Just...way, way too short. :(.
Halo 2-SP was good, but could've been way better. But, MP is the saving grace. Though, not as good as Splitters.

Not worth it:

Fable-Don't even get me goddamned started.

Remembered some more

Worth it
KOTOR - Best Single-player storyline since Grim Fandango, simply awesome fun to discover

Kinda Worth it
KOTOR - Sith Lords - The game has a better storyline the then first for the first half of the game, but it could've easily been much better if Obsidian were given more time to finish it.

Not Worth It
Metal Gear Solid : Twin Snakes - Sucked balls. I'm sure it was good when the original came out in 1999 but after playing Splinter Cell and even Beyond Good and Evil, the stealth gameplay mechanics in this suck. And the worst cutscenes in the world ; they never end......EVER.

lol, then you'r not going to like MGS or MGS2

If you only care about stealth and realism, you might like MGS3: Snake Eater. Stealth is really important in that game as you need to adapt your camo to the enviroment. And there's less codec conversations.

I love cutscenes in a game. They really tie the game all together in a way that (right now) gameplay cannot. I'm one of the few big fans of long cut scenes.

The only thing I really like about MG is the cutscenes and the storyline. The actual gameplay isn't too good (Although just about everyone I know loved MGS2 when it came out), and at some times it can be really clunky. And that's where the brilliant story comes into play; personally I get annoyed at people who say MGS has long cutscenes because that's what the game's all about. They tell a complex and intriging story that entices you, wrapping itself around you and submerging you into the world of Snake. If you don't like a story, go play Splinter Cell or something... which is what most of you do :p

Games that were worth it (long list!)

Consoles

Metal Gear Solid: One, Twin snakes, Sons of Liberty and Snake eater.

I love a game with a good story.

Timesplitters 2
So much to do! So much to unlock! Console FPS heaven!

Grand Theft Auto: Three, Vice city, San Andreas
Come on. It's a city. A god-damn real city. And you can do what ever you want!

Metroid Prime
OOOhhh, shiny. Almost perfect. Exploring is so very fun.

All the multiplayer Nintendo games on the Gamecube, like Mario Kart: DD and Super Smash Bros. Melee
Most of my friends like my Gamcube. Those who don't, still want to play it.

Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Not only is this just a blooming amazing game with a truly feel-good atmosphere, but you get the Ocarana of Time free with it. Both were truly "awesome, dude".

Final Fantasy: VI, VII, VIII, IX.
Remember I said I love a good story?

Syphon Filter: One, Two and Three.
Great action. Oh yea, and a good story!

PC games

Warcraft 3 and TFT Expansion
Guess what? It had a great story! Arthus' betrayal was truly inticing. Oh yea, and the gameplays good too.

Halo
I don't think I've ever felt as exited as when I was playing the last level of Halo.

Deus Ex: One and Invisible War
Deus Ex one I liked more for it's story and lush enviroments, which were truly superb; and Deus Ex: Invisible War I loved for the gameplay.

C+C Generals
I've played over 300 multiplayer matches. You could say I was... addicted.

Half-Life 2 and mods
Jaw dropping... everything.

Half-life and mods
It's like a movie... BUT YOU'RE IN IT!!

UT2004
The PC equivilant of Timesplitters2, but better! SO MUCH TO DO!

Fallout: One and Two.
Best. RPG. Ever.

Baulder's gate Two.
Second. Best. RPG. Ever.

World Of Warcraft
Wait a minute, ignore the above. WoW is the Best. RPG. Ever.

Battlefield 1942
The multiplayer mode never really gripped me... except at a LAN. Oh god, manhunt has never been so fun... one person escaping in the jeep, the other two persuing in a plane. There's just so many possibilites.

Doom3
Admittedly I got bored half way through, but the first half was really exiting.

Max Payne One and Two.
Slo-mo. SLO-MO.

Postal 2
...But only if you play it like jesus. Walk down the road, wave to people and stroke kittens.

Games that weren't worth it

Postal 2
...But only if you can't be arsed. Sticking kittens on guns and blazing away at pedestrians isn't my kind of fun.

NeverWinter Nights
Simply because it had no world map. AARRGHH LINEAR!

Diablo
Run around. Kill things. Get bored. Uninstall.

Vampire: The last Masquerade
Take a really amazing RPG: then stuff as many bugs, glitches, graphical errors and dodgy stuff into it as possible. Plus the game looked like an updated version of Postal 2. Not good.

Halo2
Where'd the story go? Wasn't Earth supposed to be exiting? Ah well... *pats I Love Bees DVD*

Worms3D
The multiplayer didn't work... for anyone. even after four patches.

Enter the Matrix
UURRRGGGHHH

The stealth mechanics may be less realistic, but the gameply and stealth mechanics are far better, they allow for a much more varied and fun gameplay. I don't like the cutscenes either, in fact I absolutely hate them, I thought they pretty much ruined TTS, but not for the reason you stated. I hate them because in TTS they look rediculus, like you're watching an episode of the powerrangers, so rediculusly over the top. I'd rather have long cutscenes with a good story, then short with a bad story like in SC.

Whoa whoa whoa buddy, hang on, Splinter Cell has a decent story. I dont think Information Warfare has been handled so well in any other game or even movie to date, but with that said, its not the best story.

Now, i know a good story when i see one. I've played Grim Fandango, Planescape:Torment, KOTOR 1 and 2 and many other games with long storylines. Even Deus Ex had a good storyline and features the same things from MGS, but MGS's storyline was so obnoxious and laughable that i when the game ended, i actually said to my brother that i was going to bomb Konami for making that game.

Anyway, i'll obey the rules of my own thread and shutup before i begin flaming MGS anymore
